The access of people with disabilities to digital solutions promotes their inclusion and participation in many aspects of life. Computer games based on hearing or haptic devices have been gaining popularity among persons with visual impairment (VI), and players tend to display improved spatial and abstract reasoning skills, as well as better social interaction and self-confidence, after playing these games. However, a recent survey suggested that excessive gaming could represent a public health concern as a harmful form of behavior in young people associated with risk factors of negative psychosomatic and physical complaints. Young persons with VI are regular users of various technologies, but little is still known about their media patterns. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of the variables associated with gaming for adolescents with VI. The participants were 490 students, aged 13–24 years, from special schools for students with VI. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The current survey indicated a tendency towards excessive gaming in a significant proportion of young persons with VI. Sociodemographic variables are important in predicting gaming prevalence or screen time, but further research focused on establishing possible mediators (such as parental attitudes towards media) are necessary for identifying problematic gaming behaviors among students with VI.

Abstract It has been reported that 60% of young people with visual impairment (VI) enjoy playing digital games (DGS) on the computer. However, little is still known about the new media patterns among young people with special needs. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify gaming behaviors among students with VI. A self-administered questionnaire assessing variables regarding gaming behaviors adapted for students with special needs was prepared. Finally, 490 Polish respondents with VI from 9 special schools aged 13-24 (17.9 ± 2.48) were included. Purposive sampling was chosen during selection of the members of the population. Almost 84% of students with VI had experience in playing DGs. Poor-sighted students were significantly more likely to be players than those who were blind (89% vs 11%; χ2 =22.471; P< .001). More male (57.1%) than female students (42.9%) reported playing DGs (χ2=17.913; P <.001). Students with siblings were more likely to play DGs than those without and they were more likely to play computer games if they lived with a parent whose education was at primary/secondary level (χ 2=7.340; P= .025) The most commonly chosen game genre was strategic (57.1%), whereas war games (37.7%) were less popular. Over 12% of the students took part in gaming sessions lasting 5 or more hours per day and the male students were 5.5 times more likely to report an excessive gaming than the female students (P=.000). The survey indicated a tendency towards excessive gaming in a significant proportion of young persons with VI. Sociodemographic variables are important in predicting gaming behaviors in this group and they should be taken into consideration in the future preventive actions to reduce the risk of behavioral addiction. Key messages Young people with VI are the regular users of games and they also tend to have a high tendency to an excessive gaming. Sociodemographic variables are important factor to be taken in account when predicting gaming behaviors among people with VI.

Background: Ocular injury is a major cause of ocular morbidity and unilateral visual impairment and represents a consid- erable public health concern especially in low resource societies. Objective: To evaluate the epidemiology and visual outcomes of ocular injuries in southern Ghana. Methods: A retrospective hospital-based case series was conducted. Information on new cases of ocular injuries were re- trieved and parameters including time between injury occurrence and reporting to the clinic, presenting visual acuity (VA), and the best corrected final VA were investigated and visual outcomes were assessed. Results: Most (50.2%) of the patients reported to the hospital after a day of sustaining an ocular injury; workplace injuries, older patients and farm-related injuries were most likely to report after a day of sustaining an injury. A significant proportion (40.4%) of patients reported with good presenting vision (6/6-6/18) which increased to 56.7% after treatment; 45.3% of patients reported with visual impairment (<6/18) and reduced to 42.4% after treatment. Farming (AOR = 4.5, p = 0.02), reporting after a day of sustaining injury (AOR = 78, p< 0.001), workplace injuries (AOR = 3.1, p = 0.007) and roadside injuries (AOR = 3.1, p = 0.02) were associated with poor visual outcomes. Initial VA 6/18 or better was the highest predictor of good visual outcome. Conclusion: There is a shift in the pattern of ocular injury occurrence from work-related to home- related. Keywords: Epidemiology; visual outcome; ocular injuries; incidence; Ghana.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a public health concern. Among the pathological situations leading to AKI, drugs are preventable factors but are still under-notified. We aimed to provide an overview of drug-induced AKI (DIAKI) using pharmacovigilance and medical administrative databases Methods: A query of the PMSI database (French Medical Information System Program) of adult inpatient hospital stays between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2018 was performed using ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases 10th revision) codes to identify AKI cases which were reviewed by a nephrologist and a pharmacovigilance expert to identify DIAKI cases. In parallel, DIAKIs notified in the French Pharmacovigilance Database (FPVDB) were collected. A capture-recapture method was performed to estimate the total number of DIAKIs. Results: The estimated total number of DIAKIs was 521 (95%CI 480; 563), representing 20.0% of all AKIs. The notification was at a rate of 12.9% (95%CI 10.0; 15.8). According to the KDIGO classification, 50.2% of the DIAKI cases were stage 1 and 49.8% stage 2 and 3. The mortality rate was 11.1% and 9.6% required hemodialysis. Conclusion: This study showed that drugs are involved in a significant proportion of patients developing AKI during a hospital stay and emphasizes the severity of DIAKI cases.

The gift of God in establishing a household is the presence of a child. Caring for children is an important concern for parents, especially children who have special needs. Parents who have children with special needs with visual impairment become a big challenge and generally parents will experience stress, anxiety and depression in caring for children with visual impairment. The success of parenting in children with visual impairment must be in accordance with its limitations so that children can reach the aspects given in accordance with learning blindness. Parents also have confidence in success in caring for children with visual impairments so that their children have the same abilities as normal children. This research is interesting because in the literature used there are results that parenting efficacy in parents with children with visual impairment varies, namely building self-confidence, developing social mobility and skills and emotional support, appreciation, and informative.

Background: Labor pain is a universal phenomenon and it is associated with the contraction of uterus. Rather than making the pain disappear with pharmacotherapy, the nurses can assist the laboring women to cope up with, build their self-confidence and maintain a sense of mastery of well-being. Thus, nurses must have knowledge to assess pain to implement pain relief strategies. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 52 nurses of Siddhartha Women and Children Hospital, Butwal, Nepal to assess Knowledge about Non-pharmacological Methods of Pain Relief during Labor using structured self-administered questionnaire. The reliability of the tool after pretesting was 0.883. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. Results: Among 52 nurses, 36.5% were 18-22 years of age, 46.2% of them had qualification of Proficiency certificate level Nursing, 40.4% had experience of 3 years- 6 years. In this study, 46.2% had satisfactory knowledge about non-pharmacological methods of pain relief during labor, 32.6% had fair knowledge and remaining 21.2% had poor knowledge. Conclusion: This study concluded that less than half of the nurses had satisfactory knowledge about non-pharmacological methods of pain relief during labor. Since, there is an increased risk of complications resulting from pain and anxiety during labor, management of pain is very essential thus nurse’s knowledge on these methods is crucial. Hence, the nurses should be encouraged to enhance knowledge related to management of labor pain.

Gambling disorder is a significant public health concern. The recent and continued proliferation of land-based and interactive gambling opportunities has increased both accessibility and acceptability of gambling in the United States and abroad, resulting in greater and more varied participation. However, there is currently no designated federal funding for prevention, intervention, treatment, or research, and states are left to adopt varying standards on an ad hoc basis. Social workers receive little or no training in screening or treating problem gamblers, though research suggests that a significant proportion of those with mental health and other addictive disorders also gamble excessively. Raising awareness about the nature and scope of gambling disorder and its devastating implications for families and children is a first-step toward integrating gambling into prevention, assessment and treatment education in social work. This, in turn, will increase the chances of early identification and intervention across settings and insure that social workers can lend a knowledgeable and credible voice to addressing this hidden addiction.

This article focuses on semi-narrative guided interviews with students with visual impairment (VI) who attend a state-approved special school for students with VI at the time of the interview, although they had different previous experiences in both segregated and inclusive schools. We are conducting a qualitative analysis from the perspective of teenagers concerning how they negotiate institutional ascriptions of (dis)abilities. We have selected interview sequences of two young people: (a) Kai: self-confidence and internalized self-doubt and (b) Felix: between fighting and claiming ableist divides. Our analyses reveal the different ways of how Kai and Felix each contest the ableist divide they constantly have to cope with. Kai does so by sticking to her self-concept and ambitious life plans; Felix does so by ridiculing how the institution ascribes neediness to students.
