Important records can be damaged directly and indirectly. Their restoration, if possible, is difficult as it is very time-consuming and costly. Although measures have been taken to permanently preserve records, most studies focus on preventing short-term damage from physical or biological factors and not on preventive measures against chemical damage from long-term polluted air exposure. This study investigated the types, concentrations, and distribution characteristics of hazardous chemicals present in the valuable archive of the National Library of Korea (NLK) and identified the sources of these pollutants. Mean SO2, NOX, CO, CO2, and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) concentrations were 1.49 ± 0.44 ppb, 30.52 ± 19.70 ppb, 0.75 ± 0.21 ppm, 368.91 ± 32.23 ppm, and 320.03 ± 44.20 µg/m3, respectively, meeting the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) of Korea standards. Toluene (66.43 ± 10.69 µg/m3) and acetaldehyde (157.23 ± 6.43 µg/m3) were present at the highest concentrations, respectively. Two principal components were extracted via a principal component analysis; the primary component (66%) was closely related to outdoor pollution sources and the secondary component (33%) to indoor sources. Results contribute to establishing air quality standards and management measures for preservation of this archive.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major constituents of the indoor air pollutants. The indoor air quality has caused wide concern for VOCs may affect human health in many ways. The VOCs in general rooms volatilize from building materials, furniture and so on. In print shops the print equipment and materials may produce a large amount of VOCs that may affect the health of the long-term print shop workers. The author has measured the VOC content and the air indexes in a seventy square-meter print shop in Xi’an with comprehensive functions, then, evaluated the pollution and proposed the preventions of the VOC content in print shops.

In Japan, various countermeasures have been undertaken to reduce the atmospheric concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). We evaluated the extent to which these countermeasures were effective in reducing PM2.5 concentrations by analyzing the long-term concentration trends of the major components of PM2.5 and their emissions in Nagoya City. PM2.5 concentrations decreased by 53% over the 16-year period from fiscal years 2003 to 2018 in Nagoya City. Elemental carbon (EC) was the component of PM2.5 with the greatest decrease in concentration over the 16 years, decreasing by 4.3 μg/m3, followed by SO42− (3.0 μg/m3), organic carbon (OC) (2.0 μg/m3), NH4+ (1.6 μg/m3), and NO3− (1.3 μg/m3). The decrease in EC concentration was found to be caused largely by the effect of diesel emission control. OC concentrations decreased because of the effects of volatile organic compound (VOC) emission regulations for stationary sources and reductions in VOCs emitted by vehicles and construction machinery. NO3− concentrations decreased alongside decreased contributions from vehicles, construction machinery, and stationary sources, in descending order of the magnitude of decrease. Although these findings identify some source control measures that have been effective in reducing PM2.5, they also reveal the ineffectiveness of some recent countermeasures for various components, such as those targeting OC concentrations.

Over the past decades, the worldwide prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased, thus posing a serious public health threat. Obesity is associated with the development of comorbid conditions and psychological disorders. Several lifestyle interventions have been proposed to tackle obesity; however, long-term maintenance of these interventions often proves challenging. In addition, among the different types of diets there is still a debate about the optimal macronutrient composition that will achieve the best results in weight loss. Recently, several commonly used spices such as pepper, ginger, and curcumin have been shown to play a beneficial role in obesity management. Therefore, exploring the effects of certain herbs or dietary spices on obesity may be promising. Among these spices, curcumin, which is the primary component of the spice turmeric, has gained great interest for its multiple health benefits. Several randomized controlled trials have investigated the potential favorable effects of curcumin supplementation on anthropometric measures. The aim of this review is to evaluate the effect of curcumin supplementation on the anthropometric indices among overweight or obese adults.

Low saving rates combined with low effective retirement age herald old-age poverty. This paper examines the preferred strategies of future Polish pensioners in order to sustain the standard of living in the future. A two-step approach is used: as a first-best strategy, we explore determinants of supplementary saving with binary logistic models; as a second-best strategy, we examine alternative options with principal component analysis. Future retirees rarely accumulate long-term savings, do not use dedicated instruments, and they start to save additionally far too late. Savings are concentrated in wealthier and better educated groups. Such myopia is governed by their political stance and not by awareness of dire prospects. Second-best strategies are based on optimistic assumptions about future health (seeking for additional jobs), on the assumed generosity of acquaintances or social institutions (relying on external assistance), or on rebelling. Given the increasing political power of elder generations, balancing the interests of workers and retirees will be an increasingly difficult task for policy makers.

Water matrix certified reference material (MCRM) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is used to provide quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) during the analysis of VOCs in water. In this research, a water MCRM of 28 VOCs was developed using a “reconstitution” approach by adding VOCs spiking, methanol solution into pure water immediately prior to analysis. The VOCs spiking solution was prepared gravimetrically by dividing 28 VOCs into seven groups, then based on ISO Guide 35, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate the homogeneity and long-term stability. The studies of homogeneity and long-term stability indicated that the batch of VOCs spiking solution was homogeneous and stable at room temperature for at least 15 months. Moreover, the water MCRM of 28 VOCs was certified by a network of nine competent laboratories, and the certified values and expanded uncertainties of 28 VOCs ranged from 6.2 to 17 μg/L and 0.5 to 5.3 μg/L, respectively.

It is the foundation for evaluating the reliability of transmission lines to obtain and analyze the original reliability parameters. However, these parameters depend on long- term statistic and calculation. In the case of lacking such parameters in a new project , this paper proposes a method of Principal Component Analysis to obtain the principal component of the impacting factors ,in which various factors affecting reliability parameters are taken into account. Through this method, we can use PCR to obtain the failure rate of the unknown transmission lines on the base of the known credible lines’ rates. The simulation results show that the proposed approach possesses higher forecasting accuracy and provides references for the power system dispatching departments and transmission lines maintenance departments.

<p>Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) with bandgaps less than 1 eV allow the development of mid wave infrared (MIR) sensitive detectors that exploit the benefits of colloidal materials, primarily bandgap selection and solution deposition. Additionally, the electrical behaviour of these films can be examined for characteristics that can increase the functionality of NC based detectors.  The production of devices that are designed to be competitive as ultra-low-cost, room temperature MIR detectors, operating with photonic, rather than thermal detection is detailed. The evolution of the colloidal synthesis, spray deposition methods, substrate materials and post deposition treatments used here lead to highly robust and high performing devices. These devices demonstrate a “colour” sensitivity down to 300 nm in the MIR (≈10 % of scale), with superior responsivities for this class of device, up to 0.9 AW⁻¹, and competitive specific detectivity up to 8 × 10⁹ Jones at 200 Hz and 300 K. Furthermore, these devices utilise a cheap and robust substrate material that allows operation after deformation up to 45 ° without degradation over many cycles. These devices offer a template for ultra-low-cost MIR detectors with performance that rivals microbolometers but with better measurement speed and spectral sensitivity. As such these devices showcase the key advantages of using colloidal NCs in MIR applications.  Planar and fully air processed thin film devices that demonstrate photo-induced memristive behaviour and can be used as a transistors, photode-tectors or memory devices are investigated. Following long term (60 h) air exposure, unpackaged NC films develop reliable memristive characteristics in tandem with temperature, gate and photoresponse. On/off ratios of more than 50 are achieved and the devices show long term stability, producing repeatable metrics over days of measurement. The on/off behaviour is shown to be dependent on previous charge flow and carrier density, implying memristive rather than switching behaviour. These observations are described within a long term trap filling model. This work represents an advance in the integration of NC films into electronic devices, which may lead to the development of multi-functional electronic components.  Building on the previous work the steps taken to move from a planar device, that works well in controlled conditions, to a multi-pixel sensor that can demonstrate MIR video imaging at room temperature in a noisy environment are shown. This is achieved with a 15 pixel detector that consists only of a polymer substrate and solution patterned NC pixels. This device can detect a 373 K object with the device at 298 K in a noisy environment. This performance is enabled by photogain at 5 V bias that reaches a maximum External Quantum Efficiency (EQE) of 1940 ± 290 % for a pixel with a 3.3 µm bandgap. Through the use of four separate bandgaps it is shown that “multicolour” thermal imaging systems can deliver another layer of information, on top of intensity, to the user. The behaviour of the system is examined under use and it is shown that the photoconductive device behaves as expected with regards to bias, and that trap enabled gain is sensitive to total incident flux, more than the spectral energy distribution of the target. Finally, it is shown that solution patterned QD fabrication methods can deliver electrical reproducibility between pixels that is sufficient to allow an imaging plane of multiple pixels.  The somewhat neglected tin chalcogenide semiconductor nanocrystals are investigated and inverse MIR detection at room temperature is demonstrated with planar, solution and airprocessed PbSnTe and SnTe QD devices. The detection mechanism is shown to be mediated by an interaction between MIR radiation and the vibrational stretches of adsorbed hydroxyl species at the oxdised NC surface. Devices are shown to possess mAW⁻¹ responsivity via a reduction in film conductance due to MIR radiation and, unlike classic MIR photoconductors, are unaffected by visible wavelengths. As such these devices offer the possibility of MIR thermal imaging that has an intrinsic solution to the blinding caused by higher energy light sources.  In summary, it is shown that semiconductor NCs with an all ambient fully solution processed deposition and ligand exchange procedure can be used to create simple, robust and cheap devices that are beginning to demonstrate metrics on par with current commercial thermal detector systems. It is also shown that these devices can under certain circumstances demonstrate novel behaviours that offer the prospects of enhanced or novel functionality.</p>

Abstract We examine the relationship between financial inclusion and carbon emissions. For this purpose, we develop a composite indicator of financial inclusion based on a broad set of attributes through principal component analysis (PCA) for 26 countries in the Asia region. Our robust panel regression analysis reveals a significant positive long-term impact of financial inclusion on carbon emissions. The pairwise causality test reveals unidirectional long-term causality running from financial inclusion to carbon emissions. The study suggests that policy makers may design policies that integrate accessible financial systems into climate change adaptation strategies in order to neutralize the side effect of financial inclusion deteriorating environmental quality and inclusive sustainable economic growth.
