Bioelectric Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA) can be used to qualitatively compare individuals’ hydration and cell mass independently of predictive equations. This study aimed to analyze the efficiency of BIVA considering chronological age and handgrip strength in adolescent athletes. A total of 273 adolescents (male; 59%) engaged in different sports were evaluated. Bioelectrical impedance (Z), resistance (R), reactance (Xc), and phase angle (PhA) were obtained using a single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analyzer. Fat-free mass (FFM) and total body water were estimated using bioimpedance-based equations specific for adolescents. Female showed higher values of R (5.5%, p = 0.001), R/height (3.8%, p = 0.041), Z (5.3%, p = 0.001), and fat mass (53.9%, p = 0.001) than male adolescents. Male adolescents showed higher values of FFM (5.3%, p = 0.021) and PhA (3.1%, p = 0.033) than female adolescents. In both stratifications, adolescents (older > 13 y or stronger > median value) shifted to the left on the R-Xc graph, showing patterns of higher hydration and cell mass. The discrimination of subjects older than 13 years and having higher median of handgrip strength values was possibly due to maturity differences. This study showed that BIVA identified age and strength influence in vector displacement, assessing qualitative information and offering patterns of vector distribution in adolescent athletes.

The aim of the current study was to assess phase angle (PA) and bioelectrical impedance vectors (BIVA) in adolescent (n = 105, 12–19 y) and adult (n = 90, 20–50 y) male athletes practicing varied sports modalities. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was performed with a single-frequency tetrapolar impedance analyzer after the athletes had fasted overnight for 8 h. PA and BIVA were determined from BIA data. PA presented correlations (P < .01) with body-mass index (r = .58) in all athletes and also with age in adolescent (r = .63) and adult (r = –.27) athletes. Compared with adults, adolescent athletes presented lower PA and higher frequency of PA below the 5th percentile of a reference population (P < .001). The adolescents with low PA were mostly football and basketball players. The BIVA confidence ellipses of adult and adolescent athletes were different (P < .001) between them and from their respective reference populations and were closer than those of adult and adolescent nonathletes. About 80% of the athletes were in the 95th percentile of BIVA tolerance ellipses and in quadrants consistent with adequate body cell mass and total body water. The adolescent athletes outside the 95th percentile ellipse were all football and basketball players who showed indications of decreased water retention and body cell mass and of increased water retention, respectively. PA and BIVA ellipses showed that the intense training routine of the athletes changed functional and hydration parameters and that the magnitude of these changes in adolescents may depend on the sport modality practiced.

Background: Decreased appetite is a symptom often found in chronic kidney disease. Poor appetite may negatively affect food intake, what in long-term may contribute to the development of protein–energy malnutrition. Methods: An Appetite and Food Satisfaction Questionnaire (AFSQ) was developed consisting of a question that assesses the level of appetite through a facial hedonic scale and five other questions adapted from the Buckner and Dwyer tool that assess some aspects related to food satisfaction. Each question received an arbitrary score of 0 to 3. The sum of the scores ranged from 0, the best, to 18, the worst condition. Nutritional status was assessed through seven-point SGA, bioelectrical impedance, anthropometry, and handgrip strength (HGS). Results: Eighty-four patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD; 58.3% women, mean age 54.7 ± 14.2 years, and body mass index (BMI) of 26.0 ± 4.8 kg/m2) were evaluated. Median AFSQ score was 4.0 (1.0–6.8; median and IQ). Patients were divided into tertiles according to the AFSQ score. Comparing the third tertile (score ≥ 6) with the first tertile (score < 2), the prevalence of malnutrition was greater (32.1% vs. 6.7%, respectively, p = 0.005), HGS adequacy was lower (74.6% vs. 87.3%, p = 0.001), and body cell mass index (5.7% vs. 7.4%, p = 0.001) and lean BMI were lower (11% vs. 13.4%, p = 0.001) in the third tertile. Conclusion: Poor appetite and food satisfaction determined by the questionnaire was related to worse nutritional markers, indicating AFSQ as a valid easy-to-use tool to be applied as an initial screening to identify PD patients with potential risk of malnutrition.

Equations for predicting body composition from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters are age-, sex- and population-specific. Currently there are no equations applicable to women of reproductive age in rural South Asia. Hence, we developed equations for estimating total body water (TBW), fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass in rural Bangladeshi women using BIA, with 2H2O dilution as the criterion method. Women of reproductive age, participating in a community-based placebo-controlled trial of vitamin A or β-carotene supplementation, were enrolled at 19·7 (sd 9·3) weeks postpartum in a study to measure body composition by 2H2O dilution and impedance at 50 kHz using multi-frequency BIA (n 147), and resistance at 50 kHz using single-frequency BIA (n 82). TBW (kg) by 2H2O dilution was used to derive prediction equations for body composition from BIA measures. The prediction equation was applied to resistance measures obtained at 13 weeks postpartum in a larger population of postpartum women (n 1020). TBW, FFM and fat were 22·6 (sd 2·7), 30·9 (sd 3·7) and 10·2 (sd 3·8) kg by 2H2O dilution. Height2/impedance or height2/resistance and weight provided the best estimate of TBW, with adjusted R2 0·78 and 0·76, and with paired absolute differences in TBW of 0·02 (sd 1·33) and 0·00 (sd 1·28) kg, respectively, between BIA and 2H2O. In the larger sample, values for TBW, FFM and fat were 23·8, 32·5 and 10·3 kg, respectively. BIA can be an important tool for assessing body composition in women of reproductive age in rural South Asia where poor maternal nutrition is common.

During pre-adolescence, several variables connected to growth and weight status could influence physical performance and technical skills. This study aims to assess the influence of growth-related anthropometric changes, weight status, and basketball experience on physical performance in pre-adolescent basketball players. The sample consisted of 50 male basketball players (12.2 ± 0.4 years-old) included in the U-13 category. Anthropometric characteristics were collected using standard procedures. Physical performance was evaluated by 20 m Dash, T-test, squat jump, countermovement jump, and medicine ball throw. In order to assess growth-related changes, we conducted two surveys within a 10-week time span. Student’s t-test was used to compare the data collected in the two surveys and multiple regression analyses were performed to assess the effects of growth, weight status, and basketball experience on performance. After 10 weeks there was a significant increase in FFM (Fat-Free Mass) and a significant decrease in fat parameters. Moreover, between the two surveys, all motor tests significantly improved. The results of linear regression models showed that changes in %F (percentage of body fat) were significantly associated with speed and agility, while handgrip strength and weight status were associated with upper limb explosive strength. Basketball experience was a significant predictor of all three motor tests. In conclusion, body composition changes, years of experience, and weight status influenced physical performance and players’ motor skills ability, especially speed, agility, and upper limb explosive strength.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the reliability and validity of bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and near-infrared interactance (NIR) for estimating body composition in female athletes. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used as the criterion measure for fat-free mass (FFM). Studies were performed in 132 athletes [age = 20.4 ± 1.5 (SD) yr]. Intraclass reliabilities (repeat and single trial) were 0.987–0.997 for BIA (resistance and reactance) and 0.957–0.980 for NIR (optical densities). Validity of BIA and NIR was assessed by double cross-validation. Because correlations were high ( r = 0.969–0.983) and prediction errors low, a single equation was developed by using all 132 subjects for both BIA and NIR. Also, an equation was developed for all subjects by using height and weight only. Results from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry analysis showed FFM = 49.5 ± 6.0 kg, which corresponded to %body fat (%BF) of 20.4 ± 3.1%. BIA predicted FFM at 49.4 ± 5.9 kg ( r = 0.981, SEE = 1.1), and NIR prediction was 49.5 ± 5.8 kg ( r = 0.975, SEE = 1.2). Height and weight alone predicted FFM at 49.4 ± 5.7 kg ( r = 0.961, SEE = 1.6). When converted to %BF, prediction errors were ∼1.8% for BIA and NIR and 2.9% for height and weight. Results showed BIA and NIR to be extremely reliable and valid techniques for estimating body composition in college-age female athletes.

Abstract Background Maintenance hemodialysis patients often experience protein- calorie malnutrition. Our aim is to evaluate the independent prediction accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis derived variables by the measurements of upper arm anthropometry and clinical laboratory indexes for evaluation of nutritional status of hemodialysis patients. Furthermore, the relationship between measurements of upper arm anthropometry and clinical laboratory indexes and cross –sectional evaluation of the prevalence of malnutrition with the use of the norms and thresholds were done. Methods In a cross- sectional survey of 32 stable hemodialysis patients (aged 28 to 82 years) in hemodialysis unit of Taipei Municipal Zhongxiao Hospital, we evaluated measurements of upper arm anthropometry with measurements of single frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and clinical laboratory indexes. Results The comparisons between measurements of upper arm anthropometry with measurements of single frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and some of clinical laboratory indexes were statistically significant. This study further found that both mid-arm fat area and triceps skin-fold thickness were independent contributors to percent fat mass after adjustment for body mass index and gender in the multiple regression models. This study also demonstrated that mid-arm muscle circumference, or mid-arm muscle area, or corrected mid-arm muscle area independently predicted height normalized indices of fat-free mass respectively after adjustment for body mass index and gender in the multiple regression models. The prevalence of protein wasting measured by mid-arm muscle circumference (50%) appears to be equivalent to that measured by serum albumin concentration (50%). Conclusions Mid-arm muscle and fat variables by upper arm anthropometry correlated with nutritional variables of single frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and clinical laboratory indexes. Mid-arm muscle and fat variables by upper arm anthropometry were independent predictors of body composition regarding height-normalized indices of fat-free mass and percent fat mass of hemodialysis patients even after adjustment of gender and BMI.

Weight loss is one of the most frequent adverse events during treatment with multikinase inhibitors, but scanty data are available on its extent and characteristics. This is the first assessment of the body composition by bioelectrical impedance analysis and of circulating leptin and ghrelin levels, in patients with advanced thyroid cancer before and at regular intervals during treatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor lenvatinib. Body mass index (BMI) decreased in all patients, with an average ∆ reduction of –6.4, –9.8, and –15.3% at 3, 6, and 12 months of treatment, respectively. Interestingly, in most patients, after the first year of treatment, BMI remained stable. In all patients, fat mass (FM) reduced more than fat-free mass, the highest decrement being of –60 and –16%, respectively. A decrease in the body cell mass, a parameter mainly due to muscle tissue, was observed only in patients with a vast baseline muscular mass. Total body water decreased in parallel to BMI. During treatment, leptin tightly paralleled the decrease of BMI values, consistent with the decrease in FM, whereas ghrelin levels increased upon BMI decrease. The loss of the FM accounts for the largest portion of BMI reduction during lenvatinib treatment. The increase in ghrelin could account for the BMI stabilization observed after 1 year of treatment. Nevertheless, oral nutritional supplements should be given as early as possible and athletic patients should be encouraged to maintain physical activity. In some circumstances, parenteral nutrition is required for the rehabilitation of these patients.

AbstractLipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS) may be beneficial for malnourished HIV-infected patients starting antiretroviral therapy (ART). We assessed the effect of adding vitamins and minerals to LNS on body composition and handgrip strength during ART initiation. ART-eligible HIV-infected patients with BMI <18·5 kg/m2 were randomised to LNS or LNS with added high-dose vitamins and minerals (LNS-VM) from referral for ART to 6 weeks post-ART and followed up until 12 weeks. Body composition by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), deuterium (2H) diluted water (D2O) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP), and handgrip strength were determined at baseline and at 6 and 12 weeks post-ART, and effects of LNS-VM v. LNS at 6 and 12 weeks investigated. BIA data were available for 1461, D2O data for 479, ADP data for 498 and handgrip strength data for 1752 patients. Fat mass tended to be lower, and fat-free mass correspondingly higher, by BIA than by ADP or D2O. At 6 weeks post-ART, LNS-VM led to a higher regain of BIA-assessed fat mass (0·4 (95 % CI 0·05, 0·8) kg), but not fat-free mass, and a borderline significant increase in handgrip strength (0·72 (95 % CI −0·03, 1·5) kg). These effects were not sustained at 12 weeks. Similar effects as for BIA were seen using ADP or D2O but no differences reached statistical significance. In conclusion, LNS-VM led to a higher regain of fat mass at 6 weeks and to a borderline significant beneficial effect on handgrip strength. Further research is needed to determine appropriate timing and supplement composition to optimise nutritional interventions in malnourished HIV patients.
