The increasing prevalence of sleep disorders among university students should be taken seriously. Group counseling involving a mindfulness-based strategy may help prevent students from developing insomnia and subsequent mental health disorders. This study aimed to evaluate the ameliorating effects of a mindfulness-based group intervention on sleep problems and emotional symptoms in university students in China. Twenty-one university students (16 females, 22.71 ± 4.28 years) who were not on medication were recruited and assigned to the intervention group based on the criterion of high levels of sleep problems. Additionally, twenty-four university students (19 females, 24.50 ± 0.93 years) were included as a nonrandomized control group. Individuals in the intervention group participated in a two-hour group intervention once a week for eight sessions. All participants completed self-reported questionnaire baseline tests, postintervention tests, and one-month follow-ups on mindfulness, sleep quality, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Repeated-measures ANOVA was performed. The results revealed significant intervention effects, with significant differences observed between the two groups in mindfulness and sleep quality. However, there was no significant effect of the intervention on anxiety and depressive symptoms. This study contributes to a better understanding of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based intervention in addressing sleep problems in university students.

Abstract Anxiety and depressive symptoms may predispose individuals to sleep disturbance. Understanding how these emotional symptoms affect sleep quality, especially the underlying neural basis, could support the development of effective treatment. The aims of the present study were therefore to investigate potential changes in brain morphometry associated with poor sleep quality and whether this structure played a mediating role between the emotional symptoms and sleep quality. One hundred and forty-one healthy adults (69 women, mean age = 26.06 years, SD = 6.36 years) were recruited. A structural magnetic resonance imaging investigation was performed, and self-reported measures of anxiety, depressive symptoms and sleep quality were obtained for each participant. Whole-brain regression analysis revealed that worse sleep quality was associated with thinner cortex in left superior temporal sulcus (STS). Furthermore, the thickness of left STS mediated the association between the emotional symptoms and sleep quality. A subsequent commonality analysis showed that physiological component of the depressive symptoms had the greatest influence on sleep quality. In conclusion, thinner cortex in left STS may represent a neural substrate for the association between anxiety and depressive symptoms and poor sleep quality and may thus serve as a potential target for neuromodulatory treatment of sleep problems.

BackgroundDue to the high prevalence of depressive symptoms in PC (Ayuso, 2001) is relevant to know the impact of the psychoeducation in the management of these symptoms to decrease the prevalence in the PC population.ObjectiveTo compare the effectiveness of a psychoeducational group intervention in patients with mild/moderate depression in PC.Methods242 participants older than 20 years with ICD-10 mild/moderate depression were recruited through nurse/general practice in 12 urban primary health care centers in Barcelona city. Randomization was realised by means of a computer program. Exclusion criteria: severe mental disorder, major depressive disorder, use of secondary mental health services and acute medical illness. The intervention group (IG) received a psycoeducational group program (12 weekly 1,5h sessions) leads by two nurses. The program was an adaptation of Coping With Depression (CWD) (Lewinsohn, 1989). The control group (CG) received TAU. Outcome measures: Sociodemographic, BDI and EuroQol-5D questionnaires pre-post intervention.Results232 patients were included, IG (n = 121) and CG (n = 112), of whom 86 patients had mild depression (BDI≤ 18) and 146 moderate depression (BDI≥ 19). The sample characteristics were as follow: 90% women with mean age of 53,27 (SD = 12,72)The intervention was associated with significant improvements in BDI (t(230) =-2.25; p = 0.025). Separately analyze the sample: Patients with mild depression: (t(83) =-2.52; p = 0.014).Patients with moderate depression: (t(141) =-2.62; p = 0.010). Posttest results show that this intervention has statistically significant effect on depressive symptoms in overall sample and in mild/moderate depression separately.ConclusionsThe psychoeducational intervention is effective treatment in both mild and moderate depressive symptoms in primary care.

Abstract Purpose Walking has beneficial effects on sleep quality in elderly population and patients in clinical settings. However, less is known whether walking improves sleep quality among healthy young adults. This study examined the effectiveness of a 12-week walking intervention on sleep quality among sedentary young adults. Methods Fifty-four healthy adults aged 19 to 36-years old participated a pedometer based aerobic walking intervention, a cross-over randomized control trial. Participants were assigned into two groups (group A and group B) randomly. The 12-week intervention was divided into three sessions equally. Sleep quality was assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before and after session 1 and session 3. Omron HJ-112 pedometer and daily walking diary facilitated the intervention process. Within group and between group comparisons were made for statistical analysis. Results Within group comparison by repeated measures showed that sleep duration (p < 0.01, F-test 22.79), sleep medication (p < 0.05, F-test 5.22), subjective sleep (p < 0.05, F-test 5.51) and global sleep quality (p < 0.01, F-test 12.19) were significantly improved. The comparison between intervention group and control group showed that sleep disturbance was significantly improved (p < 0.05). Conclusion Daily walking exercise has a significant effect on facilitating sleep quality and sleep components among young adults. Further studies are suggested to examine the impact of walking intensity on sleep quality.

Abstract Introduction Disturbed sleep in hospitalized patient populations is a highly prevalent phenomenon, with patients commonly reporting problems with shorter sleep duration, more frequent awakenings, and overall poorer sleep quality during hospital stay compared to at home. Sleep disturbance during hospitalization is especially problematic as sleep is associated with both physical and psychological well-being. Poorer sleep has been found to impact recovery outcomes in a number of patient populations including mild traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, and most recently, in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The current analyses examined pilot data from a novel brief modularized sleep intervention implemented with older adult Veterans living on a subacute rehabilitation unit. Methods Participants were screened for sleep problems upon admission to the unit. Veterans who screened positive were invited to participate in the sleep intervention. Components of the intervention were selected based on screener responses and included group sleep hygiene psychoeducation, environmental accommodations (e.g. ear plugs, eye mask, soothing music), and CPAP use education. Measures completed at pre- and post- intervention assessed sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), global health functioning (PROMIS Global Health Scale), and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire, PHQ-9). Pre- and post- scores were compared using paired sample t-tests. Two samples t-tests compared change scores in PHQ-9 between groups. Results A total of 33 Veterans were included in the analyses (Mage = 69.6, 3 female, intervention group n = 21). Participants showed a trend toward decreased PHQ-9 scores following the intervention (t(16) = 1.58, p = 0.100). There were no significant effects of the intervention on sleep quality or global health. Compared to the non-intervention group, the intervention group showed greater decrease in PHQ-9 scores at the time of post-intervention (t(25) = .828, p = .025). Conclusion Preliminary data suggests that a brief modularized sleep intervention may benefit depressive symptoms for older adults during hospitalization. Additional research is needed to better understand the impact of a brief intervention on self-reported sleep quality during the hospitalization period. ObjectivesAuthentic leadership could produce promising outcomes in sport. However, no intervention designed to increase coaches’ authentic leadership exists. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate such an intervention by examining its efficacy on a range of athlete outcomes.Design Mixed design with Group (Intervention, Control) as between and Time (pre, post) as within-participants factors.MethodA total of 18 coaches (Mage = 37.89; 83% male) who were coaching 153 athletes (Mage = 20.48; 50.3% females) were randomly allocated, via block randomisation, into either an intervention (n = 60) or a control group (n = 93). The coaches in the intervention group received a 2-hour-long workshop, had a midway-point meeting, and completed weekly coaching logs. The control group did not receive an intervention. Data were collected prior to the intervention and two months after the intervention had been completed. Results A manipulation check revealed the intervention group reported higher authentic leadership, compared to the control group. A repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance indicated that athletes in the intervention group reported significantly higher enjoyment and prosocial behaviours from pre to post-test compared to the control group. Conclusions The findings suggest that an authentic leadership intervention could be effective in improving coaches’ authentic behaviours and promoting positive athlete outcomes

Purpose: To examine the effects of a free-living, sedentary-inducing intervention on cognitive function. Design: Randomized controlled, parallel group intervention. Setting: University campus. Participants: Thirty-three young adults (n = 23 intervention; n = 10 control). Measures: The intervention group was asked to eliminate all exercise and minimize steps to ≤5000 steps/day for 1 week, whereas the control group was asked to continue normal physical activity (PA) levels for 1 week. Both groups completed a series of 8 cognitive function assessments (assessing multiple parameters of cognition) preintervention and immediately postintervention. The intervention group was asked to resume normal PA levels for 1 week postintervention and completed the cognitive assessments for a third time at 2 weeks postintervention. Analysis: Split-plot repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: The results of our statistical analyses showed that the group × time interaction effect was not significant ( P > .05) for any of the evaluated cognitive parameters. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the need for future experimental investigations of sedentary behavior to better understand its effects on cognitive function. However, although previous work has demonstrated favorable effects of acute and chronic PA on cognitive function, our findings suggest that a 1-week period of reduced PA does not detrimentally affect cognitive function, which may have encouraging implications for individuals going through a temporary relapse in PA.

In a Virtual Reality training, young karate athletes divided in two groups (intervention vs. control group) responded to attacks of a virtual opponent. For the analysis, the first reaction of the responding karate athletes was detected. From that point three reaction times were subtracted to analyze the attack of the virtual opponent at the time of the recognition of the real athlete. The attacks were divided into four movement stages. Analysis of Variance (ANOVAs) with repeated measures and estimation of effect sizes as well as Bonferroni post-hoc tests were applied to calculate interactions between time (PRE to POST), group (intervention vs. control) and reaction time (150 ms vs. 255 ms vs. 370 ms). We found significant effects for time and time x group interactions for the attacks Gyaku-Zuki and Kizami-Zuki as well as an effect for time x reaction time in Gyaku-Zuki (all p < 0.001), but no significant effects for time x group x reaction time in both attacks (p > 0.05). Paired t-tests showed significant improvements in attack recognition from PRE to POST for the intervention group, but not for the control group. At the pretest all athletes responded to late movement stages (extension of the pushing arm) while the intervention group responded to early movement stages (preparing steps and reduction of distance before the attack) at the posttest due to the Virtual Reality training. Early steps for the preparation of the attack and the reduction of distance seem to be important signals for attack recognition.

Abstract Family caregivers (FCs) of persons institutionalized at geriatric facilities present significant unmet communication needs regarding receiving regular updates about their loved one’s condition and having available healthcare professionals (HPs) to approach when needed. We developed and tested a mobile-app for staff-family communication with both parties having active roles in app planning to tailor it to their needs and abilities. The app includes a daily-update module for FCs and a chat option for FCs and HPs. App use was piloted at one geriatric-medical-center for 15 months (unit-level randomization resulted in one complex-care and one assisted-ventilation unit in each group- intervention and control) and one single-unit nursing-home for three months. Personal interviews were conducted with 55 FCs (28 from intervention-group and 27 FCs from control-group) before-and-after app use (with mean duration of use 1.6[S.D.=.6] months. Most participants were women and the children of the patients; their mean age was 55.9 years (S.D.=12.4). Repeated-measures Analysis-of-Variance for the end-of-life communication sub-scale on the Quality-of-communication questionnaire yielded a main effect for time (F(1,53)=8.31, p=.006) with both groups’ ratings increasing over time and an interaction effect (F(1,53)=4.78, p=.033) with a greater increase for intervention-group compared to control-group. Intervention-group participants rated the app as convenient to use. Qualitative data revealed that FCs perceived app use as improving quality of communication with the HPs who used it and improving their own well-being. The app offers a feasible and an effective mode of communication that incorporates technology in daily communication between FCs and HPs while addressing FCs’ unmet needs.

Abstract Aim: This randomised control trial (RCT) study examined the effectiveness of a mentalisation-based perinatal group intervention, Nurture and Play (NaP), in improving mother–infant interaction quality and maternal reflective functioning and in decreasing depressive symptoms. Background: Few preventive prenatal interventions have been developed for primary health care settings for mothers with depressive symptoms. Furthermore, previous prenatal intervention studies have only concentrated on reducing depressive symptoms and have not directly addressed enhancing optimal parenting qualities. Methods: The participants were 45 pregnant women with depressive symptoms. Women in the randomly assigned intervention group (n = 24) participated in the manualised, short-term NaP intervention group from pregnancy until the baby’s age of seven months, whereas control group women received treatment as usual (TAU). Maternal emotional availability (EA), reflective functioning (RF) and depressive symptoms were measured before the intervention and at the infants’ 12 months of age, and changes were evaluated using repeated measure analyses of variances (ANOVAs). Findings: The results showed that the intervention group displayed higher maternal sensitivity and RF and more reduction in depressive symptoms than the control group when babies were 12 months old. These findings provide preliminary support for the effectiveness of the NaP intervention.

Abstract BackgroundThis study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal effects of a randomized control trial about a goal-setting aerobic walking intervention conducted among sedentary young adults.MethodsA 4-week daily aerobic walking (a. continually walking for at least 10 minutes; b. walk at least 60 steps per minute.) intervention was conducted to examine its effectiveness on sleep quality, stress and life satisfaction. Fifty-four participants aged 19–36 years old were assigned into two groups randomly (i.e. intervention group, control group). Sleep quality, stress and life satisfaction were assessed at baseline, post intervention and four weeks after the intervention by a battery of questionnaires. Omron HJ-112 pedometer and daily diary were used to facilitate the intervention process.ResultsThe comparison between intervention group and control group did not show significant difference in terms of sleep quality, stress and life satisfaction after intervention. Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant longitudinal effect with regard to stress (p = 0.03). Sleep quality was improved close to statistical significance (p = 0.06). Longitudinal analysis reported that the aerobic walking effect pertaining to life satisfaction rather than stress and sleep quality (p = 0.05).ConclusionsAerobic walking is an effective exercise for stress and sleep. Further studies are suggested to explore feasible intervention strategies that could bring long-term effectiveness to health.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04427696.
