Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a common disease caused by many factors, including atherosclerosis, congenital heart disease, heart failure, and ischemic cardiomyopathy. CVD has been regarded as one of the most common diseases and has a severe impact on the life quality of patients. The main features of CVD include high morbidity and mortality, which seriously threaten human health. SUMO proteins covalently conjugate lysine residues with a large number of substrate proteins, and SUMOylation regulates the function of target proteins and participates in cellular activities. Under certain pathological conditions, SUMOylation of proteins related to cardiovascular development and function are greatly changed. Numerous studies have suggested that SUMOylation of substrates plays critical roles in normal cardiovascular development and function. We reviewed the research progress of SUMOylation in cardiovascular development and function, and the regulation of protein SUMOylation may be applied as a potential therapeutic strategy for CVD treatment.

Abstract Background: Degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) has been a common disease that make increasing patients suffer from different degrees of low back pain and radicular symptoms. At present, the incidence of kyphosis in DLS and the differences in spinal sagittal morphology between kyphotic and non-kyphotic DLS still remain unclear. Our study aimed to determine the incidence of kyphosis in DLS, explore the characteristics of spondylolisthetic and spino-pelvic sagittal parameters, and evaluate the impact of kyphosis on the life quality of patients with DLS.Methods/Design: All 108 patients with L4/5 low-grade DLS were enrolled and divided into kyphotic and non-kyphotic group. 2 spine surgeons who have certain clinical experience were selected to measure the spondylolisthetic and spino-pelvic parameters, as well as visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI). Differences between the 2 groups and characteristics of measurements were analyzed. Results: The inter-observer agreement of all parameters between the 2 spine surgeons were excellent with each ICC > 0.75. Kyphotic group had higher SA, SD, SDM, SAM, PDH, PT and SVA, and lower ADH, SS and LL than those in non-kyphotic group (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in PI and TK between the two groups (p > 0.05).Conclusion: The incidence of kyphotic spondylolisthesis in patients with L4/5 low-grade DLS is 16.7%. Compared with those in non-kyphotic group, patients with kyphosis show inferior results of spondylolisthetic parameters, more severe loss of LL, more obvious pelvic retroversion and trunk anteversion, which indicates worse spino-pelvic sagittal balance. In addition, their quality of life was significantly lower than that of patients in non-kyphotic group.

Ischemic stroke is a common disease in neurology, which seriously affects people's normal work and quality of life and brings a heavy social burden. The nanoparticle carrier generally consists of natural polymer material or synthetic polymer material. Among the synthetic polymer materials, PLGA is one of the most popular carrier materials in recent years. This paper introduces the application of PLGA nanomaterials in ischemic stroke, and reviews the application of PLGA nanomaterials in the diagnosis and tissue repair of ischemic stroke, and drug delivery of neuroprotective drugs. It provides a theoretical basis for the research progress of PLGA nanotechnology in the treatment of anti-stroke and the development of anti-stroke drugs.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most serious health disorders with increasing prevalence and high morbidity and mortality. Although diagnosis and treatment of CVD have achieved huge breakthrough in recent years, it still needs additional enhancements, which result in the demand for new techniques. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging science field that has been widely used to guide diseases diagnosis, evaluation and treatment. AI techniques are promising in CVD to explore novel pathogenic genes phenotype, guide optimal individualized therapeutic strategy, improve the management and quality of discharged patients, predict disease prognosis, and as adjuvant therapy tool. Thus, we summarize the latest application of AI techniques in clinical diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of CVD, aiming to provide novel beneficial evidence of AI and promote its application in CVD.

Acne is the eighth most common disease worldwide. Disease burden of acne such as anxiety, reduced self-esteem, and facial scarring lowers the life quality of acne patients. Isotretinoin is the most potent treatment for moderate-severe acne. However, the adverse events of isotretinoin especially teratogenicity limit its use. This study aims at investigating the therapeutical mechanisms of isotretinoin using bioinformatics analysis. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were filtered from microarray datasets GSE10432, GSE10433, and GSE11792. Functional and pathway enrichment analyses of DEGs were performed. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) network and module analyses were also conducted based on DEGs. Using isotretinoin for 1 week, LCN2, PTGES, and GDF15 were upregulated and might mediate sebocytes apoptosis and thus decreased sebum production; CCL2 originated from activated TNF signaling pathway and S100A7 could be related with “acne-flare”. While treating with isotretinoin for 8 weeks, key genes were downregulated, including HMGCS1, HMGCR, FDFT1, MVD, IDI1, and FDPS, which may be associated with decreased sebum synthesis; HMGCS1, HMGCR, and FDFT1 also probably associated with apoptosis of sebocytes. There were only two common genes including ACSBG1 and BCAT2 which worked in both 1 week and 8 weeks and could associate with decreased sebum synthesis and apoptosis of sebocytes, respectively. These results indicate potential therapeutics and side effect mechanisms of isotretinoin in the acne treatment and provide a research direction to further investigate the therapeutic mechanism of isotretinoin and thus develop retinoid-like compounds with similar curative effect and without teratogenicity.

Introduction: Hand eczema is a very common disease with a significant social and occupational impact. Objectives: To characterize a Portuguese outpatient population with hand eczema; to evaluate the impairment of the disease in quality of life (QoL); to relate the disease severity with QoL.Methods: The authors designed a prospective study. Information about atopy, psoriasis, occupational exposure and duration of disease, was recorded. The QoL was assessed by the DLQI questionnaire (Dermatology Life Quality Index) and the severity was assessed using the hand eczema severity index (HECSI). All participants were patch tested. Results: Eighty-five patients were included with a female predominance (78.8%). The median DLQI was 9.0. We found statistically significant differences in the variable HECSI between genders with greater impact in males. A significant positive correlation was found between HECSI and DLQI. DLQI and HECSI were independent of atopy, psoriasis or etiology. Increasing age significantly affects DLQI but not HECSI.Conclusions: Hand eczema has a significant impact in QoL. Although the disease is more prevalent among women it was found to be of greater severity among men. The QoL seems to be influenced by disease severity and increasing age but it was independent of the other studied variables.

Purpose Craniofacial anomalies (CFA) often result in growth abnormalities of the facial skeleton adversely affecting function and appearance. The functional problems caused by the structural anomalies include upper airway obstruction, speech abnormalities, feeding difficulty, hearing deficits, dental/occlusal defects, and cognitive and psychosocial impairment. Managing disorders of the craniofacial skeleton has been improved by the technique known as distraction osteogenesis (DO). In DO, new bone growth is stimulated allowing bones to be lengthened without need for bone graft. The purpose of this clinical focus article is to describe the technique and clinical applications and outcomes of DO in CFA. Conclusion Distraction can be applied to various regions of the craniofacial skeleton to correct structure and function. The benefits of this procedure include improved airway, feeding, occlusion, speech, and appearance, resulting in a better quality of life for patients with CFA.

Lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers across Northern America and Europe. Treatment options offered are dependent on the type of cancer, the location of the tumor, the staging, and the overall health of the person. When surgery for lung cancer is offered, difficulty swallowing is a potential complication that can have several influencing factors. Surgical interaction with the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) can lead to unilateral vocal cord palsy, altering swallow function and safety. Understanding whether the RLN has been preserved, damaged, or sacrificed is integral to understanding the effect on the swallow and the subsequent treatment options available. There is also the risk of post-surgical reduction of physiological reserve, which can reduce the strength and function of the swallow in addition to any surgery specific complications. As lung cancer has a limited prognosis, the clinician must also factor in the palliative phase, as this can further increase the burden of an already compromised swallow. By understanding the surgery and the implications this may have for the swallow, there is the potential to reduce the impact of post-surgical complications and so improve quality of life (QOL) for people with lung cancer.
