Crystalline admixtures embedded in concrete may react in the presence of water and generate thin crystals able to fill pores, capillaries and micro-cracks. Once the concrete has dried, the crystalline chemicals sit dormant until another dose of water starts the crystallization again. The research aims to analyses the early age self-sealing effect of a crystalline admixture at a dosage rate of 1–3% of the cement mass. Specimens made with two types of gravel were pre-loaded with three-point bending to up to 90% of the ultimate capacity, and conditioned through wet–dry cycles. Micro-crack closure was measured with a microscope after pre-loading, and after 1 day, 4 days, 8 days, 14 days and 20 days of wet–dry exposure. The results show that an admixture content of 3% achieves the best early self-sealing performance. These results are also confirmed by probabilistic analyses, which also emphasize the self-sealing potential of lower ICW contents.

Margaret Fuller was an American philosopher, writer, journalist and one of the first gender theorists. The article examines Fuller’s work and life in the context of 19th century American culture and social determinants influencing women’s lives. From a very early age, Fuller perceived her role in society different from the role designed for her as a biological girl by the cultural model of the times she lived in. The article focuses on Fuller’s achievements in the context of the self-made man/woman concept.

In the virtual crack closure method (VCCM), the energy release rate is computed based on the results of finite element calculation, and the stress intensity factor (SIF) is computed from the energy release rate. In this paper, the stress intensity factor of mixed-mode surface cracks under three point bending is studied by using the three dimensional modified virtual crack closure method (MVCCM). The modified virtual crack closure method is required to open one element face area whose shape is arbitrary and finite element widths are unequal across the crack front. The effect of the distance between the location of load and crack face, crack shape and crack depth to the stress intensity factor is also discussed, along with practical results and conclusions.

The monotonic and fatigue behaviour of a woven glass/polyester composite has been investigated under three-point bending conditions. Microscopic observations of the fatigue specimens revealed that the damage was mainly related to the early nucleation of transverse micro-cracks and delaminations along the longitudinal fiber bundles. From the quantitative analysis of the length and the orientation of these defects, it was possible to derive a lifetime criterion which was associated to a transition in damage mechanisms.

Abstract The coppersmiths’ uniqueness as a Roma clan is given by their traditional crafting legacy, as they themselves acknowledge. They are one of the more conservative Roma clans. Encouraged by their previous nomadic lifestyle, it hasn’t allowed them to blend with other clans or populations. Mixed marriages are forbidden and marriages with members of other Roma clans are rare. The aim of this study is to identify the elements that define the ethnic identity of the coppersmiths clan, to analyse the features that make out the coppersmiths’ customary identity, and to measure the self-segregation tendencies within the coppersmiths ethnic group. The main research methods were: bibliographic documentation, direct observation, field inquiries (structured interviews), and digital mapping. The research concluded the following: the coppersmiths are one of the extreme conservative clans, which have maintained their customary identity. The tendency of self-segregation is a direct consequence of their resistance towards anything modern, and the members of the coppersmiths clan believe that acting like the majority of society will only lead to the loss of their own identity. The consequences are mostly negative, e.g. poor school enrolment, marrying at an early age, an absence from modern socio-economic activities, etc.

End fittings are essential components in marine flexible pipe systems, performing the two main functions of connecting and sealing. To investigate the sealing principle and the influence of the temperature on the sealing performance, a hydraulic-thermal finite element (FE) model for the end fitting sealing structure was developed. The sealing mechanism of the end fitting was revealed by simulating the sealing behavior under the pressure penetration criteria. To investigate the effect of temperature, the sealing behavior of the sealing ring under different temperature fields was analyzed and discussed. The results showed that the contact pressure of path 1 (i.e., metal-to-polymer seal) was 31.7 MPa, which was much lower than that of path 2 (metal-to-metal seal) at 195.6 MPa. It was indicated that the sealing capacities were different for the two leak paths, and that the sealing performance of the metal-to-polymer interface had more complicated characteristics. Results also showed that the finite element analysis can be used in conjunction with pressure penetration criteria to evaluate the sealing capacity. According to the model, when the fluid pressures are 20 and 30 MPa, no leakage occurs in the sealing structure, while the sealing structure fails at the fluid pressure of 40 MPa. In addition, it was shown that temperature plays a significant role in the thermal deformation of a sealing structure under a temperature field and that an appropriately high temperature can increase the sealing capacity.

This paper focuses on the impact which polypropylene fiber (PF) has on the self-desiccation effect at early age of high performance concrete (HPC). The experimental results indicate that PF has little influence on the Internal Relative Humidity (IRH) caused by self-desiccation effect of concrete, but can reduce early aged self-desiccation shrinkage of concrete. With the PF dosage increasing, the values of early self-desiccation shrinkage of HPC decrease first and then increase. In the experimental conditions, the value of self-desiccation shrinkage of concrete with 0.6Kg/m3 PF is the lowest one.

The advanced growth especially on economic sector is an important matter in Indonesia nowadays. The effective booster to develop the nation’s economic is to expand the job emplyment that the societies have a powerful purchasing. Furthermore, the potential matter to create more chances for people to work is to duplicate more entrepreneurs in this country. Besides, it should start from an early age by building entrepreneurial character in children. To develop the entrepreneurial character there are several ways could be taken: First, build the self-confidence of children. Second, emphasize the hard-work desire or the willingness to be more active. Third, evolve their self-esteem that they are able to take a control of their own life. Forth, develop the conviction behavior or Istiqomah. Fifth, keep the precision or accuracy. Sixth, build the creative mindset. Seventh, help the children to solve their problems. And the last but not least, acquire the objective attitude of seeing or judging anything. Moreover, building the entrepreneurial character in children by giving them a good education, whether at home or family environment, social environment or community and school, should firstly promote the process of developing the entrepreneurial character itself. Likewise, to develop the entrepreneurial character should be done in precise and accurate ways so that the efforts to build the entrepreneurial character in children are not futile. Meanwhile, an attempt is made by describing it repeatedly and continuously, but it also needs the participation of parents at home, community leaders in the society, and also a teacher at school, in order to position themselves as educators who tend to give guidance and direction positively, rather than coercing the will of the children, especially in entrepreneurial character pinned on them. To conclude, by prioritizing the sincerity and gentleness learning ways, will certainly affect the children strongly.

The article examines the first novel of the French writer of Vietnamese origin Anna Moï, which brought her success on the French and world stage. The plot of Black Rice uses a partly autobiographical story set in Saigon during a time of fire and bloodbaths, telling the tale of two sisters, Tan and Tao, who were captured during the siege of Têt and barely managed to survive. The novel discusses issues such as the place of women in history, their positon in society and the tragedy of a nation, it has the ambition to rewrite the story seen from the eyes of a female. Talking about the horror of the fifteen-year-old girl, the systematic harassment of the jailers, the torture, the tiger cages, the reader doesn’t see a victim crushed beyond recognition, but a fighter, a warrior who knows from an early age that they are strong and designed to survive. The uncertainty of the finale and the seemingly paradoxical sadness is the realization of the fact that part of the man himself, of his will to fight, is left behind in time. And yet we have the feeling that we are leaving behind a woman who has gone through inhuman trials, but preserved herself, forged her new self, a universal person, in opposition to the soulless patriarchal world, the daughter of the dragon, ready for new battles, ready to conquer the big world that awaits her.
