This paper focuses on the resilience of a nature-inspired class of algorithms. The issues related to resilience fall under a very wide umbrella. The uncertainties that we face in the world require the need of resilient systems in all domains. Software resilience is certainly of critical importance, due to the presence of software applications which are embedded in numerous operational and strategic systems. For Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), one of the most successful heuristic methods inspired by the communication processes in entomology, performance and convergence issues have been intensively studied by the scientific community. Our approach addresses the resilience of MAX–MIN Ant System (MMAS), one of the most efficient ACO algorithms, when studied in relation with Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). We introduce a set of parameters that allow the management of real-life situations, such as imprecise or missing data and disturbances in the regular computing process. Several metrics are involved, and a statistical analysis is performed. The resilience of the adapted MMAS is analyzed and discussed. A broad outline on future research directions is given in connection with new trends concerning the design of resilient systems.

Management from Islamic Perspectives (MIP) is an emerging field that has begun to attract scholarly attention. However, the research undertaken so far has been rather fragmented and lack a clear agenda. This paper presents a literature review of the field and the areas of current focus. Although the field has a huge growth potential, I argue that it faces several challenges and problems as it develops further. I outline these potential pitfalls, suggest how to develop MIP as a formal discipline, and explain how to integrate it within real-life business practices. The article closes with a call for research to be conducted in a more organized fashion through an international consortium of researchers as well as recommendations for future research directions.

Today's Islamic understanding cannot be explained by only rules determined by that religion. The interpretation of Islam is altering, leaving an open discussion of how much of the Islamic rules are interpreted and put into real life practice. This chapter aims to understand this dynamic behavior of consumers under the framework of Islam: how it alters consumption intentions and behavior. This altering process will intensely be observed with Turkish consumers, knowing that Turkey has a unique characteristic among the countries that practice Islam as the major religious belief. Thus, the authors make a review to emphasize different preference related issues from a wider perspective. They start by focusing on general consumption contexts followed by patterns including fashion, travel, food intake, finance, anti-consumption activities, and other special occasions, finalized by conclusions and future research directions.

The current study applies the communication theory of resilience (CTR) to assess married individuals’ utilization of resilience communication during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examines pathways between communicative resilience processes, relational uncertainty, discrete emotions, and evaluations of dyadic coping. Married individuals ( n = 625) were surveyed during April 21–April 29, 2020 using Qualtrics panels. Structural equation analyses revealed that most of the resilience communication processes impacted evaluations of dyadic coping via three indirect pathways, including (a) relational uncertainty, (b) relational uncertainty → anger, and (c) relational uncertainty → fear. The alternative logic of humor did not impact dyadic coping through these indirect pathways, but instead directly, positively impacted dyadic coping. Theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

Harmony search algorithm is the recently developed metaheuristic in the last decade. It mimics the behavior of a musician producing a perfect harmony. It has been used to solve the wide variety of real-life optimization problems due to its easy implementation over other metaheuristics. It has an ability to provide the balance between exploration and exploitation during search. In this paper, a systematic review on harmony search algorithm (HSA) is presented. The natural inspiration and conceptual framework of HSA are discussed. The control parameters of HSA are described with their mathematical foundation. The improvement and hybridization in HSA with other metaheuristics are discussed in detail. The applicability of HSA in different problem domains is studied. The future research directions of HSA are also investigated.


The identification technologies used nowadays consists of biometrics as an essential component. The basic use of a conventional biometric system is to identify the authenticity of an individual through its physical as well as behavioral attributes, which is considered as one of the most suitable method to secure confidentiality of data. Though the security of these systems is stringent to breach, still it does consists of vulnerabilities due to various reasons. One of the major threats the current biometric system possess are the spoofing attacks. Spoofing attacks are difficult to conquer due to the fact that a person tries to masquerade as others in order to gain unauthorized access to the security systems. This is one of the biggest problem concerning the integrity of the biometric system. The study of spoofing attacks has gained interest of various researchers in the field of computer science, still there are aspects which needs greater attention in order to achieve a plausible solution. The study is based on the current biometric systems in order to compare and contrast the existing technology used in facial recognition. A detailed review of the existing anti – spoofing methods will be taken into account to discuss the future research directions. Thus, the work will focus on threats to the current security systems, with an aim to analyse the possible countermeasures, and its applications in real life scenarios.

This paper provides an overview of the evolving field of emotion detection and identifies the current generation of methods of emotion detection from social media platforms as well as the challenges. The challenges in the field of current emotion detection are discussed in detail and potential alternatives are proposed to enhance the ability to detect emotions in real-life systems that emphasize interactions between humans and computers as well as advertisements, recommendation systems, and medical fields such as computer-based therapy. These solutions include the extraction of semantic analysis keywords, and ontology design with the evaluation of emotions. There are multiple models and classifications of emotions such as Ekman’s model (Happy, Anger, Sad, Disgust,Fear, Surprise), and Plutchik’s model (anger-fear, surprise-anticipation, joy-sadness, joy-sadness). Further, a systematic review of publications on textual emotions detection from social media platforms, state-of-the-art methods, and existing challenges presented. Finally, we conclude with some recommendations based on critical analysis of existing techniques and determine future research directions presented at last.

Research scientists in data-intensive science use a variety of scientific software applications to support their analyses and processes. To efficiently support the work of these scientists, software applications should satisfy the essential requirements of interoperability, integration, automation, reproducibility, and efficient data handling. Various enabling technologies including workflow, service, and portal can be used to address these essential requirements. Through an in-depth review, this chapter illustrates that no one technology can address all of the essential requirements of scientific processes and therefore necessitates the use of hybrid technologies to support the requirements of data-intensive research. The chapter also describes current scientific applications that utilize a combination of technologies and discusses some future research directions.

AbstractMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological illness whose typically young adult onset results in a nearly entire lifetime of worsening disability. But despite being an unrelenting neurodegenerative disease, numerous clinical trials over the past 40 years for MS have vigorously attempted to improve or at least stabilize declining physical function. Although the vast majority of the studies assessed training effects only within controlled laboratory or clinic settings, in recent years a growing interest has emerged to test whether newer therapies can instead benefit real-life activities in the community. Nonetheless, comparatively little attention has been paid to whether the training gains can be retained for meaningful periods. This review discusses the comparative success of various physical training methods to benefit within-community activities in MS, and whether the gains can be retained long afterward. This review will suggest future research directions toward establishing efficacious treatments that can allow persons with MS to reclaim their physical abilities and maximize functionality for meaningful periods.
