Background and Objectives: To investigate the health literacy (HL) among older adults in Taiwan, we referenced an existing integrated model of HL to confirm the influencing factors of HL in older adults. We propose this study to examine the personal, situational, and socioenvironmental factors influencing HL among older adults. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at a district hospital and affiliated community center in northern Taiwan from August 2016 to May 2017. This study used the Mandarin Chinese version of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (EU-Q47). We designed three models based on the three domains of HL. Model 1 assesses personal factors. Model 2 incorporates situational factors. Model 3 adds the socioenvironmental factor. Results: We recruited 161 participants aged over 65 years. Most adults in this study had limited overall HL. The final regression model revealed that age >85 years, unknown insurance status, and dominant spoken dialect of Hakka or Taiwanese were significantly associated with higher scores of HL. Conclusions: Our study results may help clinicians with early identification of older adults at high risk for poor HL and help health administrators establish geriatric policies and health education plans.

Abstract Background Portugal has experienced trough-out his recent history successive migration patterns. Lately, with instability in Syria and the Mediterranean routes of migration between Africa and Europe, new challenges have emerged. One of them is related to migrants’ health and their navigation of health care system. In order to better understand cultural patterns of migrants, this research aims to explore their health literacy (HL) in the context of the European Health Literacy Survey framework (HLS-EU). Methods A total of 748 participants from the different offices of a company in the financial sector (Portugal, main land and autonomous territories) participated in a cross sectional survey (CAWI). Age ranged from 25 to 65 years and HL was measured using the HLS-EU instrument validated to Portuguese (HLS-EU-PT). Each participant was allocated to one of the groups, either of satisfactory HL (when scores ≥30) or insufficient HL (when scores <30). In order to access the migrant condition, a proxy variable considered the participant’s parents origin: at least one of the parents was born in a foreign country. Results Out of the 748 participants, 4.1% (n = 31) were considered migrants. Of the migrant participants, 6.9% have inadequate, 51.7% problematic, 24.1% sufficient and 17.2% excellent HL (HLS-EU-PT). Migrants have lower levels of HL when compared with nationals in this sample (respectively 58.6% and 45.8% for insufficient HL) but this difference is not statistically significant. Conclusions Although results didn’t show an association between being migrant and lower levels of HL (when compared with nationals), it is nevertheless relevant to consider that more than 1 in every two migrants (58.6%) have insufficient HL levels. Special consideration should be given to this group to promote HL levels and further research is needed to better understand how HL and cultural sensitiveness may work for a better integration of migrants.

Improving health literacy (HL) is critical for addressing health inequalities. Low literacy rates are believed to be more prevalent in ethnic minorities, which may have an impact on people’s health. For measures to be implemented in this regard, HL must be evaluated to obtain specific indicators. Our aim, therefore, was to develop a version of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16), which is recommended to be used with vulnerable populations, suited to Arabic/French-speaking migrants who reside in south-eastern Spain, and to explore its psychometric properties for assessing health literacy in this population. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in a convenient sample of 205 migrants. The structural validity was calculated by a confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA), which suggested appropriate adjustment indicators, and which indicated that the three-dimensional model is adequately adjusted to the data obtained in the study. The coefficient omega showed high internal consistency in the three HL dimensions (health care, disease prevention, and health promotion). Concurrent validity presented a significant correlation with the Newest Vital Sign test (r = 0.390; p < 0.001). The multigroup CFA showed that the heterogeneity of the sample used was not a problem for establishing the structural validity of the scale. The Arabic/French version showed good construct validity.

Abstract Objective Health conditions of older adults have deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Few studies have reported on the frailty of this group of people. The study aimed to investigate physical and social frailty in participants in a frailty prevention program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Japan from January 2021. Further, 863 participants of a frailty prevention program completed the survey. The frequency of program attendance in 2020, physical frailty (5-item frailty screening index), social frailty(diagnostic criteria of social frailty in NCGG-SGS), and depression (GDS-5) were assessed. A related factor of physical frailty was analyzed statistically by Welch's t test and the Chi-squared test. Results The study participants’ mean age, proportion of women, and mean enrollment period in program were 86.8±4.9, 96.3%, 64.3±48.6 months, respectively. The program attendance ratio was 83.4% from January to March, 54.5% from April to June, 79.8% from July to September, and 80.0% from October to December. The prevalence of physical frailty was 20.3% non-frailty, 63.7% pre-frailty, and 15.6% frailty. The prevalence of social frailty was 10.0% non-frailty, 28.6% social pre-frailty, 61.8% social frailty, and the prevalence of depression was 36.8%. Participants with physical frailty were significantly older and showed higher prevalence of social frailty and depression, displaying significantly lower attendance program than non-frailty and pre-frailty older adults (p&lt;0.05). Conclusions The study results suggest that more than half of the participants of a frailty prevention program have social frailty and a high risk of physical frailty due to COVID-19.

The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire was translated into Turkish following a validity and reliability study, but there is no comprehensive short form available. We aimed to suggest a short form of the 47-item Turkish version of European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire in this study. Data were obtained from a cross-sectional study that included a total of 686 students, 345 male and 341 female, conducted in nine different faculties of a university using the Turkish version of European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire. The development process of the short form was conducted using principal component analysis with exploratory factor analysis, and correlation and regression analyses. The validation process was done using confirmatory factor analysis and regression analysis. Based on the results, a 12-item short form was developed, retaining the conceptual framework of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire. The short form was shown to have adequate psychometric properties with high reliability, good validity, a high and moderate level of correlation, and a good model fit with the independent dataset in this cross-sectional study. The short form developed in this study was demonstrated to be a valid and reliable tool to measure health literacy easily and rapidly in Turkey.

Abstract Introduction To measure Health literacy (HL) as proposed in the context of the European Health Literacy Survey/questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q), the Health Literacy for Children and Adolescents (HLCA) Consortium (GE) adapted it for children. A trans-cultural adaptation and validation to Portuguese (HLS-EU-PTc), will supply policy makers, experts and health professionals with information that can promote healthier communities while fighting health disparities. Methods After permission was granted from the HLCA Consortium the TRAPD model was used (eg parallel translation, focus groups, two back translations). An assessment and pretesting of HLS-EU-PTc was done with 16 children for cognitive testing. A qualitative explanatory (n = 16) and quantitative, cross-sectional study (n = 82), age mean 13, SD 0.96, from Portugal (mainland) was implemented for proceed with the validation process. A variety of measures were obtained like internal consistency and mean scores. Results Preliminary results for evaluation of the psychometric properties of the HLS-EU-PTc show satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient 0.87). In a scale from 1 (very difficult) to 4 (very easy) for indicators of the HLS-EU-PTc, we have a mean of 3.25 and a SD of .478. Conclusions This is the first study to examine the feasibility of a Portuguese version (HLS-EU-PTc) of the HLS-EU-Q adapted for children and it indicates high internal consistency and level of self-reported HL. The usefulness of the HLS-EU-PTc instrument can be further discussed while planning public health policy strategies from the HL standpoint. The validated HLS-EU-PTc version of the HLS-EU-Qc survey, with the user’s manual can be accessed at www.literacia-saude.info.

Objective: To investigate the overall score and the variables associated with health literacy of pregnant women benefited from a conditional cash transfer programme. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with pregnant women benefited from a Brazilian conditional cash transfer programme. We used a validated short health literacy survey developed for research on public health and health promotion. The level of health literacy (high or low) was considered a determining variable. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analysis was applied to the data collected. Results: Only the two following variables were associated with health literacy: participation in health education activities and the choice of mothers to seek advice regarding pregnancy. Functional health literacy was higher when pregnant women participated in health education activities. Critical health literacy was higher when pregnant women sought advice from their mothers, friends, and other family members. Conclusion: Health education and a social network of pregnant women should be part of prenatal care.

It is predicted that, in the next decade, these problems will overcome musculoskeletal disorders, the first cause of employee’s withdrawal from work. Research indicates connections between stress and dimensions of the work place (like job satisfaction). Nevertheless the conceptual understanding of these relationships is sparse. In order to better understand these relationships, this research focus on the use of job–specific models of stress, associating them with health literacy (HL) - in the context of the European Health Literacy Survey framework (HLS-EU) - and physical exercise. Methods A total of 748 participants from the different offices of a company in the financial sector (Portugal, main land and autonomous territories) participated in a cross sectional survey (CAWI). Age ranged from 25 to 65 years and HL was measured using the HLS-EU instrument validated to Portuguese (HLS-EU-PT). Each participant was allocated to one of the groups, either of satisfactory HL (when scores ≥30) or insufficient HL (when scores &lt;30). Results Out of the 748 participants (58.7% males, average age of 39 years), 80.4% sometimes and very often experience stress and tension in the workplace. Less than one in every two (44.4%) practice physical activity several times a week. Of the participants, 7.1% have inadequate, 39.0% problematic, 36.6% sufficient and 17.3% excellent HL (HLS-EU-PT). Employees that are more active are those who experience lower levels of stress. Conclusions The research of the effects of HL combined with physical exercise, as buffer variables to problems related to the effects of work stress, is a new area of research that may help understand patterns of adherence to activities that can help workers deal with everyday working conditions. More research is needed to integrate HL strategies in the work place. Key messages Stress health problems affect 47.8% of the work force in Portugal. Purpose Health literacy (HL) is considered an important prerequisite for informed, self-determined health decisions. HL research among older migrants is scarce, but especially important, as older people face great challenges regarding management of chronic illnesses and, therefore, are in need of adequate healthcare. Therefore, this paper aims to report HL in the domain of healthcare (HL-HC) among older migrants in Germany stratified by different countries of origin. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected by a quota sample in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Computer-assisted personal face-to-face interviews were conducted in German, Russian and Turkish. For this analysis, a subsample of 192 first-generation migrants aged 65–80 years from Turkey, Poland, Greece or Italy was drawn from the main sample (n = 1,000). HL-HC was assessed using a sub-index of health literacy survey European questionnaire 47. Data analyses comprised descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate analyses. Findings Overall, 68.6% of the older migrants have limited HL-HC, and mean HL-HC scores vary significantly among different countries of origin. There is great variation in reported difficulties for the single HL-HC tasks by migrant groups. In multiple regressions, country of origin, not German as main language, low functional HL and low social status are significantly associated with lower HL-HC. Practical implications Interventions should be aimed at smaller target groups and should consider language issues and possible differences related to countries of origin into account. Both individual skills and system-related aspects need to be addressed. Originality/value This paper presents first data on HL-HC among older migrants in Germany and its determinants, stratified by different countries of origin.
