The one-dimensional analytical model was promoted to help select the creep constitutive equation and predict heat treatment temperature in a ferritic welded structure, along with neglecting the impact of structural constraint and deformation compatibility. The analytical solutions were compared with simulation results, which were validated with experimental measurements in a ferritic welded rotor. The as-welded and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) residual stresses on the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces were measured with the hole-drilling method (HDM) for validation. Based on the one-dimensional analytical model, different effects of Norton and Norton-Bailey creep constitutive equation on stress relief during heat treatment in a ferritic welded rotor were investigated.

The analyzed topic refers to the wear resistance and friction coefficient changes resulting from heat treatment (HT) of a hot-dip zinc coating deposited on steel. The aim of research was to evaluate the coating behavior during dry friction after HT as a result of microstructure changes and increase the coating hardness. The HT parameters should be determined by taking into consideration, on the one hand, coating wear resistance and, on the other hand, its anticorrosion properties. A hot-dip zinc coating was deposited in industrial conditions (according EN ISO 10684) on disc-shaped samples and the chosen bolts. The achieved results were assessed on the basis of tribological tests (T11 pin-on-disc tester, Schatz®Analyse device, Sindelfingen, Germany), microscopic observations (with the use of optical and scanning microscopy), EDS (point and linear) analysis, and microhardness measurements. It is proved that properly applied HT of a hot-dip zinc coating results in changes in the coating’s microstructure, hardness, friction coefficient, and wear resistance.

Two sets of experiments with and without strain cycling have been carried out to test the validity of an equation derived from the improved theory of endochronic plasticity. It has been found that for strain path not involving cyclic straining the agreement between theory and experiment is quite good. In the test with strain cycling, the agreement is not good for small strain amplitudes of cycling but the discrepancy diminishes with the increasing amplitude of the strain cycling.

This work deals with the quality of birch (Betula pendula) wood from different sites and the impact of heat treatment on it. Two degrees of heat treatment were used, 170 °C and 190 °C. The resulting property values were compared with reference to untreated wood samples. These values were wood density, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), bending strength (MOR), impact bending strength (toughness), hardness, swelling, limit of hygroscopicity, moisture content and color change. It was supposed that an increase in heat-treatment temperature could reduce strength properties and, adversely, lead to better shape and dimensional stability, which was confirmed by experiments. It was also shown that the properties of the wood before treatment affected their condition after heat treatment, and that the characteristic values and variability of birch properties from 4 sites, 8 stems totally, were reflected in the properties of the heat-treated wood. Values of static MOR were the exception, where the quality of the input wood was less significant at a higher temperature, and this was even more significant in impact bending strength, where it manifested at a lower temperature degree. Impact bending strength also proved to be significantly negatively affected by heat treatment, about 48% at 170 °C, and up to 67% at 190 °C. On the contrary, the most positive results were the MOE and hardness increases at 170 °C by about 30% and about 21%, respectively, with a decrease in swelling at 190 °C by about 31%. On the basis of color change and other ascertained properties, there is a possibility that, after suitable heat treatment, birch could replace other woods (e.g., beech) for certain specific purposes, particularly in the furniture industry.

The aim in this work is to study the influence of nickel content (as-welded state and after stress relief heat treatment) on the microstructure and toughness of CMn weld metals obtained with submerged arc welding. The nickel content vary between 0.50 wt.% and 3.11 wt.%. The microstructures were observed using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The toughness was evaluated by Charpy-V impact testing in samples cut transversally to the weld bead. The impact energy showed that nickel content up to 1 wt.% improves the toughness due to the increase of the acicular ferrite (AF) content and microstructural refinement. On the other hand, higher nickel contents have a deleterious effect on the toughness due to the presence of the microconstituent martensite-austenite (M-A) in the weld metal. The stress relief heat treatment did not improve too much the weld metal toughness, even the M-A suffering decomposition (ferrite+carbide). This may be explained by the precipitation of carbides along the boundaries of the ferrite.

This article presents a study of the impact on engine efficiency of the heat loss reduction due to in-cylinder coating insulation. A numerical methodology based on one-dimensional heat transfer model is developed. Since there is no analytic solution for engines, the one-dimensional model was validated with the results of a simple “equivalent” problem, and then applied to different engine boundary conditions. Later on, the analysis of the effect of different coating properties on the heat transfer using the simplified one-dimensional heat transfer model is performed. After that, the model is coupled with a complete virtual engine that includes both thermodynamic and thermal modeling. Next, the thermal flows across the cylinder parts coated with the insulation material (piston and cylinder head) are predicted and the effect of the coating on engine indicated efficiency is analyzed in detail. The results show the gain limits, in terms of engine efficiency, that may be obtained with advanced coating solutions.

The key task in the solidification of high-level waste (HLW) into a magnesium potassium phosphate (MPP) compound is the immobilization of mobile cesium isotopes, the activity of which provides the main contribution to the total HLW activity. In addition, the obtained compound containing heat-generating radionuclides can be significantly heated, which increases the necessity of its thermal stability. The current work is aimed at assessing the impact of various methodological approaches to HLW solidification on the thermal stability of the MPP compound, which is evaluated by the mechanical strength of the compound and its resistance to cesium leaching. High-salt surrogate HLW solution (S-HLW) used in the investigation was prepared for solidification by adding sorbents of various types binding at least 93% of 137Cs: ferrocyanide K-Ni (FKN), natural zeolite (NZ), synthetic zeolite Na-mordenite (MOR), and silicotungstic acid (STA). Prepared S-HLW was solidified into the MPP compound. Wollastonite (W) and NZ as fillers were added to the compound composition in the case of using FKN and STA, respectively. It was found that heat treatment up to 450 °C of the compound containing FKN and W (MPP-FKN-W) almost did not affect its compressive strength (about 12–19 МPa), and it led to a decrease of high compressive strength (40–50 MPa) of the compounds containing NZ, MOR, and STA (MPP-NZ, MPP-MOR, and MPP-STA-NZ, respectively) by an average of 2–3 times. It was shown that the differential leaching rate of 137Cs on the 28th day from MPP-FKN-W after heating to 250 °C was 5.3 × 10−6 g/(cm2∙day), however, at a higher temperature, it increased by 20 and more times. The differential leaching rate of 137Cs from MPP-NZ, MPP-MOR, and MPP-STA-NZ had values of (2.9–11) × 10−5 g/(cm2∙day), while the dependence on the heat treatment temperature of the compound was negligible.

The performance of an internal-combustion engine is directly related to the fuel quantity that can react with the oxygen in the air during the exothermic oxidation step, also called combustion. Thus, the amount of fuel introduced is intrinsically linked to the air volume that can be admitted into the cylinder (air filling of the cylinder). Hence keeping the air in the cylinder is one of the most important concepts to predict in simulations. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of air filling depends on many parameters. Also, the discharge coefficients, and the impact of the piston presence near the valves on the flow, during valve overlap are investigated. For this, a digital flow bench is constructed to reproduce a series of tests carried out on a flow test bench functioning as a result of the reduction in the pressure. In this paper, the engine studied is a 125 cm3 single-cylinder four-stroke atmospheric type with two valves. Thus, the idea of this paper is to treat the case of engines with large valve overlaps as small engines or engines with variable valve timing. First, traditional tests through a single valve are performed. The forward and reverse directions are systematically tested to ensure proper operation of the digital testing, and to determine the differences between tests and simulations in the case of conventional configurations. Then, the flow through the entire cylinder head, i.e. the intake valve–cylinder with piston–exhaust valve system, is tested and studied. The aim is to compare the results obtained by the tests and the simulations during the valve overlap period. Significant differences were highlighted between the rates measured in one-dimensional simulations and in the tests. It was noteworthy that the one-dimensional code overestimated the mass passing through the system during valve overlap by about one fifth of the estimated mass passing through the system from the results obtained with the test rig.

Numerical solutions of the exact equations for axisymmetric wave propagation are obtained with continuous and discontinuous loadings at the impact end of an elastic bar. The solution for a step change in stress agrees with experimental data near the end of the bar and exhibits a region that agrees with the one-dimensional strain approximation. The solution for an applied harmonic displacement closely approaches the Pochhammer-Chree solution at distances removed from the point of application. Reflections from free and rigid-lubricated ends are studied. The solutions after reflection are compared with the elementary one-dimensional stress approximation.

The effect of coolant addition or “mixing loss” on aerodynamic performance is formulated for the turbine, where mixing takes place between gas streams of different compositions as well as static temperatures. To do this, a second law efficiency measure is applied to a generalization of the one-dimensional mixing problem between a main gas stream and a single coolant feed, first introduced and studied by Hartsel [1] for the turbine application. Hartsel’s 1972 model for mass-transfer cooling loss still remains the standard for estimating mixing loss in today’s turbines. The present generalization includes losses due to the additional contributions of “compositional mixing” (mixing between unlike compositions of the main and coolant streams) as well as the effect of chemical reaction between the two streams. Scaling of the present dissipation function-based loss model to the mainstream Mach number and relative cooling massflow and static temperature is given. Limitations of the constant specific heats assumptions and the impact of fuel-to-air ratio are also quantified.
