In this study, a hybrid material is produced, and the effect of different loads varying from 40 to 60 N against an EN-31 steel counter disk on its wear behavior under dry sliding conditions at room temperature is studied. The tribological behavior is studied via the pin-on-disk method and analyzed using primary wear parameters, such as the coefficient of friction (COF), mass wear, and specific wear rate. The obtained results are compared with the results for B83 babbitt under the same wear test conditions. Microstructural observation with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is performed along with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) for chemical analysis conduction. The results from the wear experiments indicate that the hybrid material possesses a lower COF, mass wear, and specific wear rate as well as a higher wear resistance in comparison to the B83 babbitt specimen when subjected to the same test conditions. The results from the wear experiments indicate that by applying different loads of 40, 50, and 60 N, the hybrid material possesses a lower mass wear, specific wear rate, and COF specifically at a load of 40 N in comparison to the B83 babbitt specimen under the same test conditions. It was also observed that by increasing the load under dry sliding friction, the hybrid material increases its mass wear and specific wear rate.

This study determines the friction and the wear properties of the unidirectional glass epoxy composite with Gr, SiC TiO2 powder by using pin on disk apparatus. This tribological data is obtained in dry sliding condition for a constant sliding time of 30 minutes. Test specimens are prepared using hand lay-up process and by varying the different (2, 5, 7) percentage each of graphite and SiC, TiO2 particles addition for the combination of fiber and matrix. The tests are performed by varying the operating parameters of contact pressure (p) and velocity (v). The composites (2% 5%, and 7%) are worn by dry sliding at the steel counter face under ambient conditions. The coefficient of friction reaches maximum of 0.78 at 2 kg load, 2 m/s velocity with testing time duration of 24 min. whereas 5%, 7% sample shows the coefficient of friction 0.28, 0.25 respectively. The specific wear rate value drops to 0.79 (mm3/N-m×10−6) at 2 kg load at 2 m/s velocity for the 5% specimen. The maximum reduction in the specific wear rate at 3 kg load, 1m/s velocity is 32.7 percentages, 5.63 percentages for the 5,7 percentage specimen compared to 2% specimen for the graphite and SiC, TiO2 particle filled composite specimen respectively. The SEM images are also taken to support the results.

This paper presents the effect of zirconia filler on mechanical properties and dry sliding wear of bidirectional hybrid (glass and basalt fiber) fabric reinforced epoxy (G-B/E) composites. Fabrication was done by hand layup method followed by compression molding. The effect of zirconia filler loading on mechanical characteristics like hardness, tensile and flexure of fabricated G-B/E composites were determined according to ASTM standards. Also, wear behavior under dry sliding condition was performed using pin-on-disc machine for different applied normal loads/sliding distance. Experimental results reveal that incorporation of zirconia filler improves the mechanical properties. Further, the wear test results indicated addition of zirconia into G-B/E hybrid fiber composites plays important role on specific wear rate under the tribo-conditions selected for the study. Further, inclusion of zirconia into G-B/E composites shows improved wear resistance and addition of 6 wt. % of zirconia exhibits least specific wear rate compared to other hybrid G-B/E composites. In addition, Scanning electron microscope images of selected mechanical test fractured coupons also have been discussed.

Abstract: To improve the wear resistance of the hybrid powder coating, TiO2 nanoparticles was hot mixed to form a homogenous mixture with the powder in the range varying wt. dry sliding wear test conducted to determine the wear resistance. The experiments were design according to Taguchi L9 array to find the optimum nanoparticles content required to minimize the wear rate of the coating. ANOVA was used to determine the effect of the parameters on wear rate. It showed that reinforcement has the maximum contribution on the wear rate of the coating as compared to load and frequency. From the graph of means optimum parametric values was obtained at 2 % wt of reinforcement, 2 N load and 2 Hz frequency. The wear rate decrease with the increase in reinforcement. Tribological characteristics of boron modified as-cast Ti6Al4V alloys are not very well known, but these alloys enjoy improved as-cast mechanical properties and favourable manufacturing economy. Experimental results are reported here for the effects of sliding speed and normal load on the wear rate and the coefficient of friction in dry sliding of these alloys on hardened EN 31 steel. Alloys having 0%, 0.30%, and 0.55% boron by weight were tested. A full factorial experiment assessed the effects of boron content, speed, and load on wear and friction. Interactions between speed and load were found to be statistically significant in influencing the wear rate and the coefficient of friction. Regression models are developed to predict the wear rate and coefficient of friction responses. The developed contour plots can assist designers in choosing operating conditions when selecting these alloys even if the wear mechanisms are unknown. Evidence shows that the wear resistance of Ti6Al4V can be improved by boron addition, and wear regimes are sensitive to boron content.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the friction and wear performance of pure polycarbonate (PC) and 5-30 per cent wollastonite-filled (by weight) PC were comparatively evaluated under dry sliding conditions. Wear tests were carried out at room temperature under the loads of 5-20 N and at the sliding speeds of 0.5-1.5 m/s. Design/methodology/approach – The microstructures of the wollastonite, pure PC and composites were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The friction and wear tests were realized using a pin-on-disk arrangement against the hardened AISI 4140 steel. Findings – The result of this study indicated that the coefficients of friction wear rate of the materials were significantly influenced by an increase in wollastonite content. The friction coefficient of the PC was getting decreased from 0.457 to 0.198 with an increase in wollastonite content, depending on applied loads and sliding speeds. On the other hand, the results showed that the wear rates of pure PC and wollastonite-filled PCs decreased with an increase in loads. The wear rate of the PC decreased from 1.2 × 10−6 to 8.7 × 10−6 mm3/m with an increase in wollastonite content, depending on applied loads. Originality/value – There are many reports which deal with the friction and wear performance of the polymers and polymer composites. However, the effect of wollastonite effect on tribological performance of PC has up to now not been extensively researched.

This work presents the application of hybrid approach for optimizing the dry sliding wear behavior of red mud based aluminum metal matrix composites (MMCs). The essential input parameters are identified as applied load, sliding velocity, wt.% of reinforcement, and hardness of the counterpart material, whereas the output responses are specific wear rate and Coefficient of Friction (COF). The Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) is performed to optimize the multiple performance characteristics simultaneously. The Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and entropy methods are applied to evaluate the values of weights corresponding to each output response. The experimental result shows that the wt.% of reinforcements (Q=34.9%) followed by the sliding velocity (Q=34.5%) contributed more to affecting the dry sliding wear behavior. The optimized conditions are verified through the confirmation test, which exhibited an improvement in the grey relational grade of specific wear rate and COF by 0.3 and 0.034, respectively.

The sliding friction and wear performance of Al–Ni–Co–Si quasicrystalline coatings deposited by the high-velocity oxy-fuel technique were investigated under dry sliding conditions. This study indicated that changes in the imposed sliding test conditions modified the friction and wear behavior of quasicrystalline coatings. Qualitative analysis of the contact interface and wear debris were performed with the aim of understanding the role of the third body on the friction and wear processes. The dependence of the coefficient of friction on the sliding velocity and counterpart material was explained by the stick-slip behavior. It was also shown that test conditions favorable for the formation of thick intermediate layers and the densification of the coating subsurface led to low wear rates. Large cylindrical particles, formed by agglomeration of small wear debris, were suggested as a beneficial factor for the reduction of the coefficient of friction.

Three different contents (0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 wt. %) of SWCNT and MWCNTs have been dispersed into the vinylester resin in order to obtain polymer nanocomposites. The present study discusses the coefficient of friction, specific wear rate and friction stability of vinylester composites with different CNTs content, using a pin-on-disc test. The friction and wear experiments were carried out following 3 loads×3 speeds, as test parameters. The dry sliding wear behavior of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy prepared by electromagnetic horizontal continuous casting was investigated. The wear behavior of the studied alloy was discussed in terms of friction coefficient, mass loss/sliding, specific wear rate and wear mechanism. The results indicate that with the increasing normal load and sliding velocity, the friction coefficient of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy decreased monotonically, the mass loss/sliding and specific wear rate increased. By wear surface morphology and composition analysis, the wear mechanisms were discussed preliminary. Oxidation and abrasion mechanisms dominated at the lower sliding velocities and loads. Increasing loads and velocities led to a combination of oxidation and adhesion. Plastic deformation was dominant for the higher applied load and sliding velocities.
