Tungsten carbide-cobalt powders (WC-17wt% Co) were plasma sprayed by a water-stabilized system WSP. Experiments with variable feeding distances and spray distances were carried out. Thinner coatings were deposited on carbon steel substrates and thicker coatings on stainless steel substrates to compare different cooling conditions. Basic characterization of coatings was done by XRD, SEM, and light microscopy plus image analysis. Microhardness was measured on polished cross-sections. The main focus of investigation was resistance against wear in dry as well as wet conditions. The appropriate tests were performed with set-ups based on ASTM G65 and G75, respectively. The influence of spray parameters onto coating wear performance was observed. The results of mechanical tests were discussed in connection with changes of phase composition and with the quality of the coating's microstructure. The results show that for obtaining the best possible WC-17Co coating with WSP process, from the viewpoint of wear resistance, the desired parameters combination is long feeding distance combined with short spray distance.

This paper addresses the wear characteristics of the mixing tube of an abrasive-waterjet nozzle. An effective nozzle material should possess high values of both hardness and toughness. The mixing tube, which is where the abrasives are mixed, accelerated, and focused with the high-pressure waterjet, is the component in the abrasive-water jet nozzle that receives the greatest wear. Accelerated wear tests were conducted on relatively soft (steel) mixing tubes using a typical soft abrasive (garnet sand) and on harder (tungsten carbide) tubes using a harder abrasive material (aluminum oxide). A wide range of candidate tool materials, including several carbides and ceramics, was also tested using actual machining parameters. The tungsten carbide grades exhibited greater longevity than the harder ceramics, such as boron carbide, when garnet abrasives were used. The reverse trend was observed with aluminum oxide abrasives. Wear trends suggest that the wear mechanisms along the mixing tube change from erosion by particle impact at the upstream sections to abrasion at the downstream sections. Linear cutting tests were also conducted on several candidate nozzle materials to gain more information related to wear performance. It was found, for example, that the binder in tungsten carbide, which controls these properties, is a critical factor that also controls the lifetime of tungsten carbide mixing tubes.

Nickel-based composite coatings reinforced by spherical tungsten carbide were deposited on 42CrMo alloy steel using plasma transfer arc welding (PTAW) process. Their electrochemical corrosion properties in NaCl solution under atmospheric and high pressure were studied by polarization curve, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The corrosion and erosion resistance of the coatings were also investigated by salt spray corrosion and erosion corrosion tests. The results show that the self-corrosion potential of the composite coatings increased with the increase of tungsten carbide content, and the Cr element in Ni60 sample formed a stable and compact passivation film. Compared with corrosion at atmospheric pressure, the adsorption and penetration of Cl- on the coating surface enhanced due to the increase of Cl- activity under pressure, thereby to weaken the corrosion resistance. The Samples that passivated in salt spray environment, cannot completely hinder the corrosion of the coating, just only to slow down the corrosion. This study can provide theoretical basis for deep-sea oil drilling and production engineering equipment.
