Temperature rise and elastic deformation are unavoidable issues occurring in high-speed gas microbearings due to the dominant small-scale fluid dynamics in rarefied gas flow applications. In this paper, thermo-elasto-aerodynamic analysis requires simultaneously solving the modified Reynolds equation, modified energy equation, temperature–viscosity relationship and the elasticity equations for predicting the lubrication characteristics of microbearings. A thermo-elasto-aerodynamic lubrication is systematically investigated by using the partial derivative method, finite difference formulation and the finite element approach. The results indicate that, compared with rigid microbearing which has a constant viscosity gas lubricant, the temperature effect increases the load capacity, friction coefficient and stiffness coefficients, and it decreases the attitude angle and damping coefficients of the microbearing. The flexibility of the bearing pad also leads to the increase in load capacity and direct stiffness coefficients, while it remains to further decrease the direct damping coefficients on the basis of thermo-aerodynamic performance. The present study is conducive to accurately analyze the microscopic flow properties in a microbearing-rotor system.

Abstract High-speed small-scale turbomachinery for waste heat recovery and vapor compression cycles is typically supported on gas-lubricated bearings operating close to the saturation conditions of the lubricant. Under particular conditions, the gas film might locally reach the saturation pressure with potentially hazardous effects on the performance of the gas bearing. The present work introduces a model based on the Reynolds equation and the development of cavitation modeling in liquid-lubricated bearings for condensing gas bearings. The effect of condensation on load capacity and pressure and density profiles is investigated for two one-dimensional bearing geometries (parabolic and Rayleigh step) and varying operating conditions. The results suggest that the load capacity is generally negatively affected if condensation occurs. An experimental setup consisting of a Rayleigh-step gas journal bearing with pressure taps to measure the local fluid film pressure is presented and operated in R245fa in near-saturated conditions. The comparison between the evolution of the fluid film pressure under perfect gas and near saturation conditions clearly suggests the occurrence of condensation in the fluid film. These results are corroborated by the very good agreement with the model prediction.

AbstractThe raceway plays an important role in the mass and heat transportation inside a melter gasifier. Considering that pure oxygen at room temperature instead of hot air is injected into the melter gasifier, a two-dimensional mathematical model at steady state is developed in the current work to describe the effect of the additional gas injection on the characteristics around the raceway in melter gasifier. The results show that a high-speed jet with a highest temperature above 3500 K could be found in front of tuyere. Furthermore, a small scale of gas flow circulation occurs in front of tuyere that results in a more serious thermal damage to tuyere. In order to decrease the gas temperature in the raceway to prevent the blowing-down caused by tuyere damage, the additional gas, including N2, natural gas (NG) and coke oven gas (COG) should be injected through the tuyere. Compared with N2, additional fuel gas injection gives full play to the high temperature reduction advantage of hydrogen. In addition, considering the insufficient hearth heat after injecting NG and the effective utilization of secondary resource, an appropriate amount of COG is recommended to be injected for optimizing blast system.

Purpose Owing to the development of the smaller-sized rotational machinery, the demand for the high-speed and low-resistance gas bearing increases rapidly. The research of micro gas bearing in the condition of rarefied gas state is still not satisfied. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to present a numerical investigation of the effect of misalignment and rarefaction effect on the comprehensive performance of micro-electrical-mechanical system (MEMS) gas bearing. Design/methodology/approach The Fukui and Kaneko model is expanded to 2D solution domain to describe the flow field parameters. The finite element method is used to discretize the equation. Newton–Raphson method is used to solve the nonlinear equations for the static performance of gas bearing, and partial deviation method is adopted for the solution of dynamic equations. Findings The static and dynamic characteristics of MEMS gas bearing are calculated, and the comparison is made to study the influence of rarefaction effect and misalignment. The results show that the rarefaction effect will decrease bearing load capacity compared with traditional solution of Reynolds equation, and the misalignment will reduce the stability of bearing. The influence of misalignment on gas film thickness is also analyzed in this paper. Originality/value The investigation of this paper emerges the change regularity of comprehensive performance of MEMS gas bearing considering rarefaction effect and misalignment, which provides a reference for the actual manufacturing of MEMS gas bearing and for the safety operation of micro dynamic machinery. Abstract The aim of the research presented in this paper was determination of power consumption and gas hold-up in mechanically agitated aerated aqueous low concentration sucrose solutions. Experimental studies were conducted in a vessel of diameter 0.634 m equipped with high-speed impellers (Rushton turbine, Smith turbine or A 315). The following operating parameters were changed: volumetric gas flow rate (expressed by superficial gas velocity), impeller speed, sucrose concentration and type of impeller. Based on the experiments results, impellers with a modified shape of blades, e.g. CD 6 or A 315, could be recommended for such gas-liquid systems. Power consumption was measured using strain gauge method. The results of gas holdup measurements have been approximated by an empirical relationship containing dimensionless numbers (Eq. (2)).

High-speed foil bearings are currently used in increasingly demanding, high performance applications. The application under consideration is a 120 krpm natural gas turboexpander-compressor, which requires 38 mm (1.5 in.) foil journal bearings with high stiffness and load capacity to help enhance rotordynamic stability. This paper describes the development of the foil bearing for this application and includes measured stiffness and damping coefficients recorded on a high-speed dynamic bearing test rig. The dynamic test data were taken for several different foil bearing configurations with varying spring-element foil thicknesses, number of spring-element foils, and bearing shim thickness. All three parameters have a direct impact on bearing clearance. The influence of these different parameters on measured stiffness and damping coefficients and thermal performance of the bearings are presented and discussed.

The effect of the sliding friction has been important in calculating the heat flux of gas flow from the surface since there is some slip over the surface. There has not been any the temperature jump condition including the sliding friction part so far. In this paper, we will propose a new temperature jump condition that includes the sliding friction. Our new temperature jump condition will be evaluated for NACA0012 micro-airfoil in high-speed rarefied gas flow simulations using the CFD method, which solves the Navier-Stokes equations within the OpenFOAM framework with working gas as air. The airfoil case is simulated with various Knudsen numbers from 0.026 to 0.26, and the angles-of-attack (AOAs) from 0-deg to 20-deg. The surface gas temperatures predicting by our new temperature jump condition give good agreements with the DSMC data, especially the NACA0012 micro-airfoil cases with the high Knudsen numbers, Kn = 0.1, and Kn = 0.26 with AOA = 20-deg. for the lower surface.

The limiting values of load capacity, stiffness and damping coefficients for a foil bearing are presented. The necessary conditions for high bearing numbers (journal operating at high speed) are obtained by simplifying the compressible Reynolds equation. Linearized stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained using infinitesimal perturbation method. Results of load capacity, stiffness and damping coefficients, for foil bearing are compared with those obtained for a rigid gas journal bearing. The limiting values of dynamic characteristics for a foil bearing are constant for all eccentricity ratios.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of turbulent, inertia, and misaligned effects on the static and dynamic characteristics and stability of high-speed water-lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearings. Based on the Navier–Stokes equation, the mixing-length theory, and the essential assumption that the velocity profile is not strongly affected by inertia force, the fluid lubrication model with turbulent, inertia, and misaligned effects is established, and then the stability analysis of bearings is carried out based on the equation of motion with four degrees of freedom. The model is solved by the finite difference method and the numerical results are compared under different operating conditions. The results show that the turbulent effect greatly increases the load capacity, power consumption, stiffness and damping coefficients, and stability of bearings, and the inertia effect significantly increases the volume flow rate of bearings, and the misaligned effect increases the load capacity, stiffness and damping coefficients, and stability of bearings. In high rotary speed and moderate eccentricity ratios, the influence of the inertia effect on the load capacity, stiffness coefficients, and stability cannot be neglected.
