In solving piezoelectric equations of motion, we established an electric–acoustic equivalent circuit of tangentially polarized thin cylindrical transducers and derived analytical expressions of the electric-acoustic response from the harmonic driving-voltage excitation. To experimentally verify the findings, we manufactured a parallel electric-acoustic transmission network for transducers excited by multifrequency driving signals. We found that the tangentially polarized thin cylindrical transducers achieved a much higher electric-acoustic conversion efficiency than the radially polarized thin cylindrical transducers. The electric-acoustic impulse response of the transducers consisted of a direct-current damping with lower-frequency components, a damping oscillation with higher-frequency elements, and a higher resonant frequency of the transducer over its center frequency. The characteristics of radiated acoustic signals included contributions from the geometrical shape and size of the transducer, the physical parameters of piezoelectric material, the type of driving-voltage signals, and the polarization mode of the transducers. In comparison, our theoretical predictions are in good agreement with experimental observations. It is plausible that using the tangentially polarized thin cylindrical transducers as sensors in the acoustic-logging tool may significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured acoustic-logging signals.

By increasing the demand for radio frequency (RF) and access of hackers and spoofers to low price hardware and software defined radios (SDR), radio frequency interference (RFI) became a more frequent and serious problem. In order to increase the security of satellite communication (Satcom) and guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of end users, it is crucial to detect the RFI in the desired bandwidth and protect the receiver with a proper mitigation mechanism. Digital narrowband signals are so sensitive into the interference and because of their special power spectrum shape, it is hard to detect and eliminate the RFI from their bandwidth. Thus, a proper detector requires a high precision and smooth estimation of input signal power spectral density (PSD). By utilizing the presented power spectrum by the simplified Welch method, this article proposes a solid and effective algorithm that can find all necessary interference parameters in the frequency domain while targeting practical implantation for the embedded system with minimum complexity. The proposed detector can detect several multi narrowband interferences and estimate their center frequency, bandwidth, power, start, and end of each interference individually. To remove multiple interferences, a chain of several infinite impulse response (IIR) notch filters with multiplexers is proposed. To minimize damage to the original signal, the bandwidth of each notch is adjusted in a way that maximizes the received signal to noise ratio (SNR) by the receiver. Multiple carrier wave interferences (MCWI) is utilized as a jamming attack to the Digital Video Broadcasting-Satellite-Second Generation (DVB-S2) receiver and performance of a new detector and mitigation system is investigated and validated in both simulation and practical tests. Based on the obtained results, the proposed detector can detect a weak power interference down to −25 dB and track a hopping frequency interference with center frequency variation speed up to 3 kHz. Bit error ratio (BER) performance shows 3 dB improvement by utilizing new adaptive mitigation scenario compared to non-adaptive one. Finally, the protected DVB-S2 can receive the data with SNR close to the normal situation while it is under the attack of the MCWI jammer.

We gathered more than 1130 high-resolution optical spectra for more than 250 Galactic classical Cepheids. The spectra were collected with the optical spectrographs UVES at VLT, HARPS at 3.6 m, FEROS at 2.2 m MPG/ESO, and STELLA. To improve the effective temperature estimates, we present more than 150 new line depth ratio (LDR) calibrations that together with similar calibrations already available in the literature allowed us to cover a broad range in wavelength (5348 ≤ λ ≤ 8427 Å) and in effective temperature (3500 ≤ Teff ≤ 7700 K). This gives us the unique opportunity to cover both the hottest and coolest phases along the Cepheid pulsation cycle and to limit the intrinsic error on individual measurements at the level of ~100 K. As a consequence of the high signal-to-noise ratio of individual spectra, we identified and measured hundreds of neutral and ionized lines of heavy elements, and in turn, have the opportunity to trace the variation of both surface gravity and microturbulent velocity along the pulsation cycle. The accuracy of the physical parameters and the number of Fe I (more than one hundred) and Fe II (more than ten) lines measured allowed us to estimate mean iron abundances with a precision better than 0.1 dex. We focus on 14 calibrating Cepheids for which the current spectra cover either the entire or a significant portion of the pulsation cycle. The current estimates of the variation of the physical parameters along the pulsation cycle and of the iron abundances agree very well with similar estimates available in the literature. Independent homogeneous estimates of both physical parameters and metal abundances based on different approaches that can constrain possible systematics are highly encouraged.

Recent experience has shown that a plate-like load suspended beneath a helicopter moving in horizontal forward flight has unstable characteristics at both low and high forward speeds. These findings have prompted a theoretical analysis to determine the longitudinal and lateral dynamic stability of a suspended pallet. Only the longitudinal stability is considered here. Although it is strictly a non-linear problem, the usual assumptions have been made to obtain linearized equations of motion. The aerodynamic derivative data required for these equations have been obtained, where possible, for the appropriate ranges of Reynolds and Strouhal number by means of static and dynamic wind tunnel testing. The resulting stability equations (with full aerodynamic derivative information) have been set up and solved, on a digital computer, to give direct indication of a stable or unstable system for a combination of physical parameters. These results have indicated a longitudinal unstable mode for all practical forward speeds. Simultaneously the important stability derivatives were found for this instability and modifications were made subsequently in the suspension system to eliminate the instabilities in the longitudinal sense. Throughout this paper, all metric dimensions are given approximately.

Owls use interaural time differences (ITDs) to locate a sound source. They compute ITD in a specialized neural circuit that consists of axonal delay lines from the cochlear nucleus magnocellularis (NM) and coincidence detectors in the nucleus laminaris (NL). Recent physiological recordings have shown that tonal stimuli induce oscillatory membrane potentials in NL neurons (Funabiki K, Ashida G, Konishi M. J Neurosci 31: 15245–15256, 2011). The amplitude of these oscillations varies with ITD and is strongly correlated to the firing rate. The oscillation, termed the sound analog potential, has the same frequency as the stimulus tone and is presumed to originate from phase-locked synaptic inputs from NM fibers. To investigate how these oscillatory membrane potentials are generated, we applied recently developed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis techniques (Kuokkanen PT, Wagner H, Ashida G, Carr CE, Kempter R. J Neurophysiol 104: 2274–2290, 2010) to the intracellular waveforms obtained in vivo. Our theoretical prediction of the band-limited SNRs agreed with experimental data for mid- to high-frequency (>2 kHz) NL neurons. For low-frequency (≤2 kHz) NL neurons, however, measured SNRs were lower than theoretical predictions. These results suggest that the number of independent NM fibers converging onto each NL neuron and/or the population-averaged degree of phase-locking of the NM fibers could be significantly smaller in the low-frequency NL region than estimated for higher best-frequency NL.

Abstract The partially covered, sandwich-type cantilever with concentrated mass at the free end is studied. The equations of motion for the system modeled via Euler beam theory are derived and the resonant frequency and loss factor of the system are analyzed. The variations of resonance frequency and system loss factor for different geometrical and physical parameters are also discussed. Variation of these two parameters are found to strongly depend on the geometrical and physical properties of the constraining layers and the mass ratio.

In this study, the nonlinear vibration of a curved carbon nanotube conveying fluid is analyzed. The nanotube is assumed to be covered by a piezoelectric layer and the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory is employed to establish the governing equations of motion. The influence of carbon nanotube curvature on structural modeling and fluid velocity vector is considered and the slip boundary conditions of CNT conveying fluid are included. The mathematical modeling of the structure is developed using Hamilton’s principle and then, the Galerkin procedure is employed to discretize the equation of motion. Furthermore, the frequency response of the system is extracted by applying the multiple scales method of perturbation. Finally, a comprehensive study is carried out on the primary resonance and piezoelectric-based parametric resonance of the system. It is shown that consideration of nanotube curvature may lead to an increase in nonlinearity. Implementing the fluid velocity vector in which nanotube curvature is included highly affects the maximum amplitude of the response and should not be ignored. Furthermore, different system parameters have evident impacts on the behavior of the system and therefore, selecting the reasonable geometrical and physical parameters of the system can be very useful to achieve a favorable response.


Recent advances in NMR microscopy based on fundamental physical parameters and experimental factors are discussed. We consider fundamental resolution limits due to molecular diffusion and the experimental system bandwidth, as well as practical resolution limits arising from poor signal-to-noise ratio due to small imaging voxel size and finite line broadening due to signal attenuation brought about by diffusion. Several microscopic imaging pulse sequences are presented and applied to elucidating cellular imaging problems such as the cell lineage patterns in Xenopus laevis embryos. Experimental results obtained with 7.0 T NMR microscopy system are presented.

In this paper, we will focus on the dynamical behavior of a rigid body suspended on an elastic spring as a pendulum model with three degrees of freedom. It is assumed that the body moves in a rotating vertical plane uniformly with an arbitrary angular velocity. The relative periodic motions of this model are considered. The governing equations of motion are obtained using Lagrange’s equations and represent a nonlinear system of second-order differential equations that can be solved in terms of generalized coordinates. The numerical solutions are investigated using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithms through Matlab packages. These solutions are represented graphically in order to describe and discuss the behavior of the body at any instant for different values of the physical parameters of the body. The obtained results have been discussed and compared with some previous published works. Some concluding remarks have been presented at the end of this work. The importance of this work is due to its numerous applications in life such as the vibrations that occur in buildings and structures.

The rotors of a majority of rotating machines are supported upon bearings whose flexibility has a significant effect on the dynamics of the system. Supports incorporating hydrodynamically maintained oil films in particular, in addition to possessing different stiffness and damping in mutually perpendicular planes, exhibit non-reciprocal coupling between motions in these planes. The author develops the equations of motion for a rotor-bearing system of this type, and describes how both the response to an out-of-balance forcing and the unstable behaviour of such a system may be predicted by evaluating separately the dynamical characteristics of the rotor and the bearings. The method is applicable to systems in which the rotor is axisymmetric and has an arbitrary mass and stiffness distribution symmetrically disposed about its centre of span. Some new aspects of the resonant and unstable behaviour of rotating shafts are brought out due to the nature of the method of solution. Theoretical predictions are compared and agree very well with the results of tests on a 1380 lb model rotor supported on two 4 in diameter cylindrical journal bearings.

Physical parameters of modules and gait parameters affect the overall snake-inspired robot performance. Hence the system-level optimization model has to concurrently optimize the module parameters and the gait. The equations of motion associated with the rectilinear gait are quite complex due to the changing topology of the rectilinear gait. Embedding these equations in the system-level optimization model leads to a computationally challenging formulation. This paper presents a system-level optimization model that utilizes a hierarchical optimization approach and meta-models of the pre-computed optimal gaits to reduce the complexity of the optimization model. This approach enabled us to use an experimentally validated physics-based model of the rectilinear gait and yet at the same time enabled us to create a system-level optimization model with a manageable complexity. A detailed case study is presented to show the importance of concurrently optimizing the module parameters and the gait using our model to obtain the optimal performance for a given mission.
