Propargylic amines are important multifunctional building blocks that are frequently exploited in the synthesis of privileged heterocyclic entities. Herein we report on a novel flow process that achieves the safe and effective on-demand synthesis of propargylic amines in a telescoped manner. This process minimizes exposure to hazardous azide intermediates and renders a streamlined route into these building blocks. The value of this approach is demonstrated by the rapid generation of a small selection of drug-like thiazolines that result from a high-yielding reaction cascade between propargylic amines with different aryl isothiocyanates.

In this paper, we present some experience of using the concurrent functional language Erlang to implement a distributed video-on-demand server. For performance reasons, the server is deployed in a cheap cluster made from off-the-shelf components. The demanding system requirements, in addition to the complex and ever-changing domain, suggested a highly flexible and scalable architecture as well as a quite sophisticated control software. Functional programming played a key role in the development, allowing us to identify functional abstractions throughout the system. Using these building blocks, large configurations can be defined using functional and process composition, reducing the effort spent on adapting the system to the frequent changes in requirements. The server evolved from a prototype that was the result of a project supported by a regional cable company, and it is currently being used to provide services for real-world users. Despite our initial concerns, efficiency has not been a major issue.

Design changes are necessary to sustain the product against competition. Due to technical, social, and financial constraints, an organization can only implement a few of many change alternatives. Hence, a wise selection of a change alternative is fundamentally influential for the growth of the organization. Organizations lack knowledge bases to effectively capture rationale for a design change; i.e., identifying the potential effects a design change. In this paper, (1) we propose a knowledge base called multiple-domain matrix that comprises the relationships among different parameters that are building blocks of a product and its manufacturing system. (2) Using the indirect change propagation method, we capture these relationships to identify the potential effects of a design change. (3) We propose a cost-based metric called change propagation impact (CPI) to quantify the effects that are captured from the multiple-domain matrix. These individual pieces of work are integrated into a web-based tool called Vatram. The tool is deployed in a design environment to evaluate its usefulness and usability.

*Full text is in GermanNational Socialism in German, Austrian and English Secondary School Textbooks (1980–2017)English AbstractThis article analyzes a selection of German, Austrian and English textbooks dealing with National Socialism. By adopting Waltraud Schreiber’s methodology of categorial textbook analysis, the article presents the surface structure and building blocks as a basis for further analysis. The occurrence (or absence) of the pedagogical historical principle of multiperspectivity is examined with reference to the example of sections concerning “Youth in National Socialism.” Subsequently, the study explores the role of multiperspectivity in the construction of critical historical consciousness. This is followed by a deconstruction of the image of women presented in the textbooks, with particular emphasis on simplifications.

From a selection of research topics carried out in our laboratory during the last twenty years it becomes apparent that our main target was the discovery of new or improved synthetic methods together with new properties. Our efforts were made with the aim of being of some utility to other fields of research, with particular emphasis to glycobiology and heterocyle-based bioorganic chemistry. We performed new chemistry mainly in the field of carbohydrate manipulations taking as a primary rule the simplicity and efficiency manners. Toward this end, modern synthetic tools and approaches were employed such as heterocyle-based transformations, multicomponent reactions, organocatalysis, click azide–alkyne cycloadditions, reactions in ionic liquids, click photoinduced thiol-ene coupling, and click sulfur–fluoride exchange chemistry. With these potent methodologies in hand, the syntheses of carbohydrate containing amino acids up to proteins glycosylation were performed.1 Heterocyclic Glycoconjugates and Amino Acids2 Triazole-Linked Oligonucleotides: Application of Click CuAAC3 Non-Natural Glycosyl Amino Acids4 Non-Natural Oligosaccharides5 Calixarene-Based Glycoclusters6 Carbohydrate-Based Building Blocks7 Homoazasugars and Aza-C-disaccharides8 Synthesis of Glycodendrimers9 Peptide and Protein Glycoconjugates10 Conclusions

Inspired by sarcocarps, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that can capture moisture spontaneously are presented as building blocks for the construction of underoil superhydrophilic surfaces. The MOF coating showed excellent self-cleaning properties to crude oil under water, and achieved on-demand emulsion separation through selective water filtration and adsorption.

As grids become larger and more interconnected in nature, scientists can benefit from a growing number of distributed services that may be invoked on demand to complete complex computational workflows. However, it also means that these scientists become dependent on the cooperation of third-party service providers, whose behaviour may be uncertain, failure prone and highly heterogeneous. To address this, we have developed a novel decision-theoretic algorithm that automatically selects appropriate services for the tasks of an abstract workflow and deals with failures through redundancy and dynamic re-invocation of functionally equivalent services. In this paper, we summarize our approach, describe in detail how it can be applied to a real-world bioinformatics workflow and show that it offers a significant improvement over current service selection techniques.

This paper presents a model to predict the convergence quality of genetic algorithms based on the size of the population. The model is based on an analogy between selection in GAs and one-dimensional random walks. Using the solution to a classic random walk problem—the gambler's ruin—the model naturally incorporates previous knowledge about the initial supply of building blocks (BBs) and correct selection of the best BB over its competitors. The result is an equation that relates the size of the population with the desired quality of the solution, as well as the problem size and difficulty. The accuracy of the model is verified with experiments using additively decomposable functions of varying difficulty. The paper demonstrates how to adjust the model to account for noise present in the fitness evaluation and for different tournament sizes.

The method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to three-dimensional numerical simulation for the fluid flow process of ammonium persulfate crystallizer. By using standard model, this paper respectively simulated the flow field within the crystallizer in the impeller installation height of 1.2 m while stirring speed is of 60 r/min, 100 r/min and 200 r/min; and simulated the impact of the flow field inside the crystallizer when the stirring speed of 100 r/min and impeller installation height respectively is of 0.7 m, 1.2 m and 1.7 m. That calculation results show that: the velocity gradient is mainly concentrated in the area of internal draft tube and paddle around. With the increase of impeller speed, the flow velocity of the fluid within the crystallizer corresponding increases; and the energy also gradually decreases from mixing impeller to the settlement zone with the loss of the installation height, and the kinetic energy in the bottom of the crystallizer is reduced. Considering the energy and crystallization effect, selection of mixing speed of 100 r/min or so and installation height of about 1.2 m is more appropriate.
