The behavior of ice under extreme conditions undergoes the change of intermolecular binding patterns and leads to the structural phase transitions, which are needed for modeling the convection and internal structure of the giant planets and moons of the solar system as well as H2O-rich exoplanets. Such extreme conditions limit the structural explorations in laboratory but open a door for the theoretical study. The ice phases IX and XIII are located in the high pressure and low temperature region of the phase diagram. However, to the best of our knowledge, the phase transition boundary between these two phases is still not clear. In this work, based on the second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory, we theoretically investigate the ice phases IX and XIII and predict their structures, vibrational spectra and Gibbs free energies at various extreme conditions, and for the first time confirm that the phase transition from ice IX to XIII can occur around 0.30 GPa and 154 K. The proposed work, taking into account the many-body electrostatic effect and the dispersion interactions from the first principles, opens up the possibility of completing the ice phase diagram and provides an efficient method to explore new phases of molecular crystals.

Stoichiometric LiMn2O4 undergoes a structural phase transition around room temperature from cubic to orthorhombic, induced by a partial charge ordering on the manganese sites, similar to the Verwey transition occurring in Fe3O4 . We studied the charge ordering transition of LiMn2O4 by means of anelastic spectroscopy, measuring the Young's modulus, E, and the elastic energy loss function, Q-1. Our measurements confirm the occurrence of a phase transition at 292 K on cooling, showing a large hysteresis on heating. The anelastic spectroscopy results also indicate that the transformation is characterised by the coexistence of two phases. In addition, the Young's modulus reveals presence of an additional anomaly, on cooling, around the onset of the phase transformation.

The Raman spectra of four crystals of TbFe3-хGax (BO3) 4 solid solutions (x from 0 to 0.54) were studied in the temperature range from 8 to 350 K. The temperatures of structural phase transitions were determined. The observed spectral behavior is characteristic to condensation and restoration of soft modes. Soft modes are associated with a structural phase transition from the R32 phase to the P3121 phase. The Compositions-Temperature phase diagram was constructed

Goethite is a major iron-bearing sedimentary mineral on Earth. In this study, we conducted in situ high-pressure x-ray diffraction, Raman, and electrical impedance spectroscopy measurements of goethite using a diamond anvil cell (DAC) at room temperature and high pressures up to 32 GPa. We observed feature changes in both the Raman spectra and electrical resistance at about 5 and 11 GPa. However, the x-ray diffraction patterns show no structural phase transition in the entire pressure range of the study. The derived pressure-volume (P-V) data show a smooth compression curve with no clear evidence of any second-order phase transition. Fitting the volumetric data to the second-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state yields V0 = 138.9 ± 0.5 Å3 and K0 = 126 ± 5 GPa.
