Teas and various herbal teas are well-known beverages and are commonly consumed around the world. In this study, we focused on kuromoji tea. Kuromoji is a deciduous shrub of the Lauraceae family, and the plucked leaves and branches have been drunk as a tea in production areas for a long time. However, no studies have investigated the subjective and physiological effects of kuromoji tea. In this study, the effects of kuromoji tea were examined on the basis of the measurements of heart rate variability and cerebral blood flow, core body temperature and subjective assessments. Moreover, the results of this study showed that a pleasant subjective feeling could be obtained by sniffing the aroma of kuromoji teas, especially tea leaves. It was also found that the aroma of kuromoji teas has the potential to stimulate saliva secretion and increase subjective and physiological excitements in the oral cavity. 1,8-Cineole, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, carvone and geraniol were determined in both kuromoji leaves and branches. In this study, the beneficial effects of kuromoji teas when drunk conventionally were investigated.

AbstractThe beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue (BAT) on obesity and associated metabolic diseases are mediated through its capacity to dissipate energy as heat. While immune cells, such as tissue-resident macrophages, are known to influence adipose tissue homeostasis, relatively little is known about their contribution to BAT function. Here we report that neuropilin-1 (NRP1), a multiligand single-pass transmembrane receptor, is highly expressed in BAT-resident macrophages. During diet-induced obesity (DIO), myeloid-resident NRP1 influences interscapular BAT mass, and consequently vascular morphology, innervation density and ultimately core body temperature during cold exposure. Thus, NRP1-expressing myeloid cells contribute to the BAT homeostasis and potentially its thermogenic function in DIO.

Background: Phytoestrogens have recently been claimed to positively influence menopausal discomforts, including hot flashes. However, little is known about the influence of phytoestrogens on core body temperature during oestrogen fluctuation at menopause. Objective: Previously published findings showed that phytoestrogens could relieve menopausal complaints, thus, the present review was aimed at assessing the effects of phytoestrogens on thermoregulatory mechanism during menopausal transition. Results: The molecular mechanisms underlying hot flashes are complex. Oestrogen fluctuations cause hypothalamic thermoregulatory centre dysfunction, which leads to hot flashes during menopause. The phytoestrogens of interest, in relation to human health, include isoflavones, lignans, coumestans, and stilbenes, which are widely distributed in nature. The phytoestrogens are capable of reducing hot flashes via their oestrogen-like hormone actions. The potential effects of phytoestrogens on hot flashes and their molecular mechanisms of action on thermoregulatory centre are discussed in this review. Conclusion: The effects of phytoestrogens on these mechanisms may help explain their beneficial effects in alleviating hot flashes and other menopausal discomforts.

Calorie restriction (CR) enhances health span (the length of time that an organism remains healthy) and increases longevity across species. In mice, these beneficial effects are partly mediated by the lowering of core body temperature that occurs during CR. Conversely, the favorable effects of CR on health span are mitigated by elevating ambient temperature to thermoneutrality (30°C), a condition in which hypothermia is blunted. In this study, we compared the global metabolic response to CR of mice housed at 22°C (the standard housing temperature) or at 30°C and found that thermoneutrality reverted 39 and 78% of total systemic or hypothalamic metabolic variations caused by CR, respectively. Systemic changes included pathways that control fuel use and energy expenditure during CR. Cognitive computing-assisted analysis of these metabolomics results helped to prioritize potential active metabolites that modulated the hypothermic response to CR. Last, we demonstrated with pharmacological approaches that nitric oxide (NO) produced through the citrulline-NO pathway promotes CR-triggered hypothermia and that leucine enkephalin directly controls core body temperature when exogenously injected into the hypothalamus. Because thermoneutrality counteracts CR-enhanced health span, the multiple metabolites and pathways altered by thermoneutrality may represent targets for mimicking CR-associated effects.

Background and Objectives: For a long time, Asian women have known to use rice water, rice bran for skin care, lightening dark spots and slowing down the aging process. Gamma Oryzanol, an ester mixture of trans-ferulic acid with phytosterols and triterpene alcohols extracted from rice bran oil, has been shown to have beneficial effects on the skin, especially its antioxidant and anti-aging effect. The aims of this research were to formulate Gamma Oryzanol-loaded anti-aging cream and to evaluate the product quality. Materials and Methods: Gamma Oryzanol was imported from Japan. Some formulation parameters such as emulsifi-ers, performance modifiers were investigated and the product quality was evaluated according to the criteria of drugs and cosmetics. Results: The excipients were chosen including 1% (w/w) of Lunamer with 3% (w/w) of Prolipid as emulsifiers and 8% (w/w) of mango seed butter as a state modifier in the formulation of Gamma Oryzanol anti-aging cream. The cream is ivory-white, thick, smooth, fragrant-smelling and satisfied all criteria of developed specification. Conclusion: The study was successful in the preparation of Gamma Oryzanol anti-aging cream. Key words: Gamma Oryzanol, anti-aging cream, Franz cells.
