Coinage metal(I)···metal(I) interactions are widely of interest in fields such as supramolecular assembly and unique luminescent properties, etc. Only two types of polynuclear silver(I) pyrazolato complexes have been reported, however, and no detailed spectroscopic characterizations have been reported. An unexpected synthetic method yielded a polynuclear silver(I) complex [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n (L1Clpz− = 4-chloride-3,5-diisopropyl-1-pyrazolate anion) by the reaction of {[Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]3}2 with (nBu4N)[Ag(CN)2]. The obtained structure was compared with the known hexanuclear silver(I) complex {[Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]3}2. The Ag···Ag distances in [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n are slightly shorter than twice Bondi’s van der Waals radius, indicating some Ag···Ag argentophilic interactions. Two Ag–N distances in [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n were found: 2.0760(13) and 2.0716(13) Å, and their N–Ag–N bond angles of 180.00(7)° and 179.83(5)° indicate that each silver(I) ion is coordinated by two pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms with an almost linear coordination. Every five pyrazoles point in the same direction to form a 1-D zig-zag structure. Some spectroscopic properties of [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n in the solid-state are different from those of {[Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]3}2 (especially in the absorption and emission spectra), presumably attributable to this zig-zag structure having longer but differently arranged intramolecular Ag···Ag interactions of 3.39171(17) Å. This result clearly demonstrates the different physicochemical properties in the solid-state between 1-D coordination polymer and metalacyclic trinuclear (hexanuclear) or tetranuclear silver(I) pyrazolate complexes.

ABSTRACTThe solid state luminescent properties of new statistical copolymers of 2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene and a porphyrin-substituted phenylene vinylene are reported. The photoluminescence, PL, emission shows an efficient energy transfer to the porphyrin, in spite of the small absorption coefficient of the porphyrin in the wavelength range of the poly [2-methoxy-5-(2'- ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene], MEH-PPV, emission. At a porphyrin content of 0.25%, by weight, the emission is already dominated by the porphyrin. The PL efficiency of these copolymers is significantly reduced from the value of 13% for MEH-PPV down to 3% for the copolymer with 10.84% of porphyrin. Efficient energy transfer is also observed in the emission spectra of light-emitting diodes.

A series of copper(ii) complexes of the ligand 2,6-bis(pyridin-3-ylethynyl)pyridine have been synthesised and characterised by 1H and DOSY NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In solution these systems display almost identical spectroscopic properties, however the solid state structures are shown to vary widely, depending upon the choice of anion. The tetrafluoroborate salt was revealed to be a discrete Cu2L4 cage-like helicate. The tosylate salt, whilst of the same Cu2L4 stoichiometry, was shown to be a coordination polymer. Finally the nitrate salt structure was observed to be a discrete Cu2L2 metallocycle.

ABSTRACTChromium doped garnets are tunable solid state laser materials which emit in the red and near infrared. We have studied the emission spectra of Y3Al5O12:Cr3+ (YAG:Cr), Gd3Ga5O12:Cr3+ (GGG:Cr) and Gd3Sc2Ga3O12:Cr3+ (GSGG:Cr) in a wide range of temperatures 25-800 K and have related their spectroscopic properties to the interaction between the 2E and 4T2 energy levels of the chromium ion. The measurements included absorption, lifetime, luminescence under continuous and pulsed excitations, and thermal effects on sharp lines.

Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ was synthesized via a dipping method. Stoichiometric high pure SiO2 was put into the solution of zinc nitrate and manganese nitrate. The mixture was milled while being heated until the water was vaporized completely. The as-received mixture was added into the ethanol, and dispersed well, then the mixture was milled and heated to remove the ethanol thoroughly by evaporation. The precursor were dried for several hours at 60°C, and annealed in a reducing atmosphere of active carbon at 1000°C for 4 h. As-prepared powders of Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ was tested by XRD and SEM. Its luminescent properties were characterized by excitation and emission spectra. The results are compared with those of Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ prepared by a general solid state reaction.

As part of our synthetic efforts for new triplesalen derivatives, we reacted 2,4,6-triacetyl- 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene (1) with excess Cu(ClO4)2 · 6H2O, imidazole, and ethylenediamine. However, not the triple ketimine derivative was formed but the mononuclear CuII complex [LCuII(ImH)]ClO4 · 0.5EtOH · 0.5H2O (HL = 6-(1-(2-aminoethylimino)ethyl)-2,4-diacetyl-1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene) with only one ketimine function. This complex forms a one-dimensional coordination polymer in the solid state through the apical binding of a keto-oxygen atom of one cation to the CuII ion of a neighboring cation. Magnetic measurements reveal the presence of weak antiferromagnetic intra-chain interactions
