The diagnosis of affective disorders has been the subject of constant research by clinicians from all over the world for many years. Making an appropriate diagnosis among patients suffering from mood disorders is sometimes problematic due to the personality-changing nature of patients and the similarity in the clinical picture of episodes in affective disorders. For this reason, there is a need to develop rapid and effective methods of determining biological markers that differentiate these diseases. The research was carried out with blood taken from 15 patients and 15 volunteers. The analysis of biological material for trace concentrations of zinc and copper was carried out with the use of ultrasensitive triple-quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (TQ ICP-MS). The obtained results prove that the concentration of copper in the test group was lower than in the control group. For the zinc concentrations, the inverse relationship was observed. The group of patients was characterized by a higher concentration of this element than the group of healthy volunteers. Summarizing the obtained results and comparing them with the results of studies by other authors, it was found that zinc and copper may be potential biomarkers of affective disorders and pandemic syndrome.

The procedure of restorative proctocolectomy is associated with a complete removal of the colon and slight reduction of ileum length, which together can lead to systemic shortages of trace elements. Inflammatory changes in the pouch mucosa may also have some impact. However, there is no data on trace elements in pouchitis. Therefore, in the present study we aimed to assess the effect of acute pouchitis on the status of selected trace elements in rats. Restorative proctocolectomy with the construction of intestinal J-pouch was performed in twenty-four Wistar rats. Three weeks after the surgery, pouchitis was induced. Eight untreated rats created the control group. Liver concentrations of selected micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Co, Mn, Se) were measured in both groups six weeks later, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Abstract Background The aim of this survey was to determine the effects of an aerobic physical training program of six months duration on the serum and urinary concentrations of essential trace elements among middle distance runners and untrained, non-sportsmen participants. Methods 24 well-trained, middle-distance (1500 and 5000 m), aerobic male runners (AG) were recruited at the beginning of their training season and 26 untrained males formed the control group (CG). All participants were from the same region of Spain, and all of them had been living in this area for at least two years. Serum and urine of samples of Cobalt (Co), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), Molybdenum (Mo), Selenium (Se), Vanadium (V) and Zinc (Zn) were obtained at the beginning of the training season, and six months later, from all participants. All samples were analyzed with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results Two-way ANOVA showed significant differences relative to group effect in serum concentrations of Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Se and Zn. Attending to time effect, there were differences in Mn (p = 0.003) and Zn (p = 0.001). The group x time interaction revealed differences only in the case of Mn (p = 0.04). In urine, significant differences between group were obtained in Co, Cu, Mn, Se and V. Time effect showed changes in Co, Cy, Mo and Se. Finally, the group and time interaction revealed significant differences in urinary Cu (p = 0.001), Mn (p = 0.01) and Se (p = 0.001). Conclusions A six-month aerobic training program for well-trained athletes induced modifications in the body values of several minerals, a fact which may reflect adaptive responses to physical exercise. The obtained data could be interesting for physicians or coaches in order to consider specific modifications in sportsmen’s diets as well as to determine specific nutritional supplementation strategies.

A number of ninety-six hair samples from Sicilian fishermen were examined for total mercury detection by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. The mercury levels obtained were compared with mercury levels of 96 hair samples from a control group, in order to assess potential exposure to heavy metals of Sicilian fishermen due to fish consumption and closeness to industrial activities. Furthermore, the mercury levels obtained from hair samples were sorted by sampling area in order to verify the possible risks linked to the different locations. The overall mean concentration in the hair of the population of fishermen was6.45±7.03 μg g−1, with a highest value in a fisherman of Sciacca (16.48 μg g−1). Hair mercury concentration in fishermen group was significantly higher than in control group (p<0.01). There was no significant difference in hair total mercury concentrations between sampling areas (p>0.05). The results of this study indicate a greater risk of exposure to mercury in Sicilian fishermen, in comparison to the control population, due to the high consumption of fish and the close relationship with sources of exposure (ports, dumps, etc.).

Abstract Background Physical training produces changes in the extracellular and intracellular concentrations of trace minerals elements. To our knowledge, only three compartments have been studied simultaneously. The aim of the present study was to analyze the influence of physical training on extracellular (serum, plasma and urine) and intracellular (erythrocytes and platelets) concentrations of Copper (Cu). Methods Forty young men participated in this study. The participants were divided into a training group (TG; n = 20; 18.15 ± 0.27 years; 68.59 ± 4.18 kg; 1.76 ± 0.04 m) and a control group (CG; n = 20; 19.25 ± 0.39 years; 73.45 ± 9.04 kg; 1.79 ± 0.06 m). The TG was formed by semi-professional soccer players from a youth category with a regular training plan of 10 h/week. All of them had been participating in high level competitions and had trained for at least 5 years. Plasma, serum, urine, erythrocyte and platelet samples of Cu were obtained and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results The TG showed lower concentrations of Cu in erythrocytes (p < 0.05) despite similar intakes. There were no significant differences in Cu concentrations in plasma, serum, urine and platelets although the trend was similar to that observed in erythrocytes. Conclusions The assessment of trace element concentrations should be carried out in both extracellular and intracellular compartments to obtain a proper evaluation and to identify possible deficiencies of the element. We believe that additional Cu supplementation is needed in athletes who perform physical training regularly.

The objective of the present study is investigation of hair essential element content in children with different clinical forms of cerebral palsy (CP). Assessment of hair element content in children with spastic and ataxic cerebral palsy was performed using inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry. The obtained data demonstrate that hair cobalt, copper, manganese, and selenium levels were 33%, 9%, 19%, and 18% lower than those in the control group. At the same time, more profound differences were observed in patients with spastic diplegia, where the level of cobalt, copper, manganese, selenium, and vanadium was 33%, 9%, 20%, 18%, and 43% lower than in controls. A strong tendency to reduced hair iron and magnesium was also observed. Patients with ataxic cerebral palsy were characterized by 33%, 5%, and 21% lower hair cobalt, copper, and selenium content, whereas chromium levels exceeded the respective control values by 63%. In regression models only hair copper (β = -0.337; p < 0.001) and chromium (β = 0.214; p < 0.023) content were significantly associated with cerebral palsy in children. The observed differences may be associated with the role of metals in pathogenetic mechanisms of different forms of cerebral palsy.

The amount of dietary trace elements absorbed from a meal depends, among other factors, on the quantities of certain minor plant constituents present in the meal. These substances can act as ligands and bind trace elements in the digestive tract in available or unavailable forms for absorption. The present study was designed to investigate the extent to which different polyphenols (PP) may influence Zn and Cu absorption in rats. Different PP of nutritional interest (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, catechin and rutin) were studied using meals extrinsically-labelled with stable isotopes67Zn and 65Cu. Male Wistar rats were fed on a non-labelled semi-synthetic diet containing (mg/kg) 38 Fe, 35 Zn and 7·5 Cu for 8 d. PP were dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent and added to the meal at 1 g/kg during 3 d before isotope administration and until the end of the experiment (a further 3 d). The control group received the dimethyl sulfoxide only. After overnight food deprivation, rats were fed on the labelled test meals (4 g diet+0·1 mg 67Zn and 0·1 mg 65Cu) with 0·5 mg Dy as a faecal marker. Faeces and urine pools were collected for 3 d and analysed for 67Zn and65 Cu isotopic enrichment using the inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique. Zn absorption was significantly less in rats fed on chlorogenic acid or caffeic acid than in the control group. Catechin ingestion non-significantly inhibited 67Zn absorption. However, the PP studied were without effect on Cu absorption. The study illustrates the effect of metal-binding phenolic compounds on mineral nutrition in the rat, and the possible importance of the effects of different foods rich in these compounds on mineral absorption in man.

Objectives. Controversial reports exist whether bleaching agents cause a susceptibility to demineralization. The aim of this study was to compare the calcium loss of enamel treated with different bleaching agents and activation methods.Method and Materials. The specimens obtained from human premolars were treated in accordance with manufacturer protocols; 10% carbamide peroxide, 38% hydrogen peroxide light-activated, 38% hydrogen peroxide laser-activated, and no treatment (control). After cariogenic challenge calcium concentrations were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry.Results. No differences were found between the calcium loss of the laser-activated group and 10% carbamide peroxide group (). However, the differences between laser-activated and control groups were statistically significant (). The differences between 10% carbamide peroxide and the control group were not significant (). On the other hand, the light-activated group showed a significantly higher calcium loss compared with the other groups ().Conclusions. The results show that bleaching agents may cause calcium loss but it seems to be a negligible quantity for clinical aspects.
