Red meat (RM) consumption is correlated with multiple health outcomes. This study aims to identify potential biomarkers of RM consumption in the Chinese population and evaluate their predictive ability. We selected 500 adults who participated in the 2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey and examined their overall metabolome differences by RM consumption by using elastic-net regression, then evaluate the predictivity of a combination of filtered metabolites; 1108 metabolites were detected. In the long-term RM consumption analysis 12,13-DiHOME, androstenediol (3α, 17α) monosulfate 2, and gamma-Glutamyl-2-aminobutyrate were positively associated, 2-naphthol sulfate and S-methylcysteine were negatively associated with long-term high RM consumption, the combination of metabolites prediction model evaluated by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 70.4% (95% CI: 59.9–80.9%). In the short-term RM consumption analysis, asparagine, 4-hydroxyproline, and 3-hydroxyisobutyrate were positively associated, behenoyl sphingomyelin (d18:1/22:0) was negatively associated with short-term high RM consumption. Combination prediction model AUC was 75.6% (95% CI: 65.5–85.6%). We identified 10 and 11 serum metabolites that differed according to LT and ST RM consumption which mainly involved branch-chained amino acids, arginine and proline, urea cycle and polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism. These metabolites may become a mediator of some chronic diseases among high RM consumers and provide new evidence for RM biomarkers.

Aims Early implant migration measured with radiostereometric analysis (RSA) has been proposed as a useful predictor of long-term fixation of tibial components in total knee arthroplasty. Evaluation of actual long-term fixation is of interest for cemented components, as well as for cementless fixation, which may offer long-term advantages once osseointegration has occurred. The objective of this study was to compare the long-term migration with one- and two-year migration to evaluate the predictive ability of short-term migration data and to compare migration and inducible displacement between cemented and cementless (porous metal monoblock) components at least ten years postoperatively. Patients and Methods Patients who had participated in RSA migration studies with two-year follow-up were recruited to return for a long-term follow-up, at least ten years from surgery. Two cemented tibial designs from two manufacturers and one porous metal monoblock cementless tibial design were studied. At the long-term follow-up, patients had supine RSA examinations to determine migration and loaded examinations (single leg stance) to determine inducible displacement. In total, 79 patients (54 female) returned, with mean time since surgery of 12 years (10 to 14). There were 58 cemented and 21 cementless tibial components. Results Migration at one year and two years was significantly correlated with long-term migration (p < 0.001). Median migration at the long-term follow-up was 0.6 mm (maximum total point motion; interquartile range (IQR) 0.4 to 0.9) for the cemented group and 0.6 mm (IQR 0.3 to 1.1) for the cementless group with no difference between groups (p = 0.99). Inducible displacement was significantly lower for the cementless components (p < 0.001). Conclusion Long-term migration was strongly correlated with two-year migration. Although long-term migration was not different for cemented or cementless tibial components, inducible displacement at the long-term visit was significantly lower for these cementless components, suggesting superior fixation. This study examined whether particular recovery activities after work have a positive or negative effect on employee recovery from work (i.e., cognitive, emotional, and physical detachment) and sleep quality. We used a two-wave panel study of 230 health care employees which enabled looking at both short-term and long-term effects (i.e., two-year time interval). Gender, age, marital status, children at home, education level, management position, and working hours were used as control variables. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that work-related off-job activities were negatively associated with cognitive and emotional detachment in both the short and long run, whereas low-effort off-job activities were positively related to cognitive detachment in the short run. Moreover, household/care off-job activities were positively related to sleep quality in the long run, whereas physical off-job activities were negatively associated with sleep quality in the long run. The long-term findings existed beyond the strong effects of baseline detachment and sleep quality. This study highlights the importance of off-job recovery activities for health care employees’ detachment from work and sleep quality. Practical implications and avenues for further research are discussed.

Abstract Background Although definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with salvage esophagectomy has improved overall survival (OS) for esophageal cancer, it is a more invasive approach than neoadjuvant CRT followed by surgery or surgery alone, and causes high mortality after surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the short and long-term outcomes of salvage esophagectomy, to determine their prognostic factors, and to create a prediction model for OS using a classification and regression tree (CART). Methods Ninety patients who had undergone CRT followed by esophagectomy for thoracic esophageal cancer at Keio University Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, between June 1994 and August 2014 were identified for this study. We divided the 90 patients into two groups—the salvage group and the neoadjuvant group—according to the dose of irradiation of CRT. Forty-four patients who underwent CRT with radiation dose less than 50 Gy, followed by planned esophagectomy, were allocated to the neoadjuvant group. Forty-six patients with salvage esophagectomy for locally recurrent or residual cancer after definitive CRT (greater than 50 Gy) were allocated to the salvage group. Results Patients from the salvage group tended to have a lower OS (median survival: Salvage, 25 months vs neoadjuvant, 50 months, P = 0.149). In the salvage group, pneumonia and age were identified as factors predictive of in-hospital mortality. OS was significantly lower in patients with postoperative pneumonia and female gender. We set the prediction model for OS in the salvage group using survival CART. The group of R1/2 resection aged ≥ 56.5 years and the group suffering from postoperative pneumonia were the groups at highest risk; the area under the curve was 0.72. Conclusion The present study demonstrates the short-term and long-term prognostic factors of salvage esophagectomy after definitive CRT for esophageal cancer. Achieving improvement in OS after salvage surgery requires increased R0 resection rates and decreased pulmonary complications. Both informed decision making in the adoption of salvage surgery and specific plans to reduce pneumonia through means such as pulmonary rehabilitation are required. We examine the forecasting power and profitability of moving average (MA) and trading range break (TRB) rules for the daily prices of ten Asian stock indices from January 1990 to September 2012 using bootstrap tests. The results confirm the predictive ability of MA rules whereas the picture uncovered by the TRB rules is more mixed. The MA rules consistently generate positive excess returns after transaction costs, with highest magnitudes often achieved for less developed markets. However, more developed markets surprisingly seem to be far from informationally efficient as well. Furthermore, short-term variants of the trading rules outperform systematically long-term variants.

Although mechanically fastened joints are generally considered a mature technology, significant problems still exist with their use, among which the preload loss in pretensioned bolts is a major one. This paper has investigated two key issues in structural durability design for mechanically fastened composite joints, i.e. temperature–time-dependent behavior for viscoelastic preload relaxation and prediction method for its long-term performance. Towards this purpose, a two-phase experimental program was conducted consisting of short- and long-term joint relaxation tests. Phase I monitored the short-term fastener preload relaxation (up to 36 h), with a special self-made bolt strain sensor. Phase II utilized the time–temperature superposition principle to establish a method of using short-term relaxation curves to construct the long-term master curve (accelerated test). It was found that there was a significant loss of bolt preload when temperature and initial preload increased, and the relaxation rate of composited joint was much larger than that of the metallic joint. Based on the strong temperature dependence of bolt relaxation, accelerated characterization was conducted for long-term behavior. Furthermore, to quantitatively relate the relaxation data to a model equation, a new preload prediction model was developed based on the creep total-strain theory. Comparisons of the prediction model and accelerated test results indicated that the improved model provided better accuracy than existing models such as Shivakumar–Crews’s and Hook-Norton’s models for describing the long-term preload behavior.

We examine the relation between CEO pay components and aggressive non-GAAP earnings disclosures using CEO pay components as proxies for managers’ short- versus long-term focus. Specifically, we explore the extent to which short-term bonus plan payouts and long-term incentive plan payouts are associated with: (1) Managers’ propensity to exclude expense items in excess of those excluded by equity analysts; and, (2) The magnitude of those incremental exclusions. We find that long-term incentive plan payouts are negatively associated with the likelihood and magnitude of aggressive non-GAAP exclusions. Our results are consistent with managers reporting non-GAAP information less aggressively when they are more focused on long-term, rather than short-term, value.

A reliable prognostic factor for periampullary carcinoma is critical to improve surgical outcomes. Intraoperative acidosis reflects the incidence of intraoperative adverse events and impact the prognosis. In this study, 612 patients with periampullary carcinoma who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) were divided into high- and low-pH groups according to the cut-off value of receiver operating characteristic curve (7.34). Through statistical analysis of the difference between the high- and low-pH group, it was found that the low-pH group had worse short-term prognosis than the high pH group, and intraoperative pH was an independent prognostic factor for patients with periampullary carcinoma undergoing PD. In addition, patients who underwent laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy had a more alkaline pH after surgery. This is of great help for early judgment of short-term and even long-term prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer after surgery, and can even guide clinicians to improve prognosis by early adjustment of pH value.

This study develops an instrument to measure the financial condition of local governments(LG) in Indonesia. The instrument will serve as an early warning system for local governments’financial management. The instrument to measure their financial condition consists of sixdimensions, namely short-term solvency, long-term solvency, budgetary solvency, service-levelsolvency, financial flexibility, and financial independence. Each dimension has its own indicators.There are a total of eighteen indicators examined in this study. These indicators are combinedto form a composite index, called a Financial Condition Index (FCI). The reliability andvalidity of the composite index is analyzed and the results show that the measures developed inthis study are reliable and valid. In addition, the instrument possesses the criteria of a goodmeasure: it is theoretically sound, a comprehensive assessment, it has predictive ability, distinctiveability, it is practical, objective, and a resistant to manipulation and gaming.Keywords: financial condition, local government, short term solvency, long term solvency,budgetary solvency, service-level solvency, financial flexibility, financial independence

Two experiments were conducted to determine standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and the concentration of metabolizable energy (ME) in non-heat-treated and heat-treated soybean expellers (L-0, L-12, and L-48). L-0 underwent short-term steam conditioning for 60 s, whereas L-12 and L-48 underwent short-term steam conditioning for 60 s and long-term steam conditioning for 12 or 48 min. All heat-treated soybean expellers were expander processed. In experiment 1, 10 ileal-cannulated barrows (54.22 ± 4.54 kg) were allotted to a replicated 5 × 4 Youden square design with eight replicate pigs per diet. Each source of soybean expellers was included in one diet, and a nitrogen-free diet was also used. Results indicated that the SID of AA in non-heat-treated soybean expellers was less (P < 0.01) than in heat-treated soybean expellers. In experiment 2, 40 barrows (17.52 ± 1.63 kg) housed in metabolism crates were allotted to a corn-based diet or four corn–soybean expellers diets. Feces and urine were collected with 5 d adaptation and 4 d collection periods. The ME in non-heat-treated soybean expellers was less (P < 0.01) compared with L-0, L-12, or L-48. In conclusion, the SID of AA and the ME in heat-treated soybean expellers were greater than in non-heat-treated soybean expellers.
