AbstractPolymer-inorganic hybrid materials composed of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and zinc compounds were prepared by sol-gel in-situ transition polymerization of zinc complex in PMMA matrix. Zinc acetate dihydrate dissolved in ethanol was used as the inorganic precursor. Monoethanolamine (MEA) acted as a complexing agent to control the hydrolysis of zinc acetate to produce a zinc compound network, and then PMMA, formed in-situ through a radical polymerization, were chemically bonded to the forming zinc compound network to realize a hybrid material. Transparent homogenous hybrid materials with slight colours from pink to yellow were fabricated by varying the composition. TEM, FT-IR were employed to investigate structural and physical properties. The UV-shielding effect was evaluated by UV-VIS. The low content of zinc (around 0.02 wt%) and the fine particle size rendered it visibly transparent and capable of greatly attenuating UV radiation in the full UV range.

PCEC-CaO-SiO2hybrid material was synthesized by a two steps method. FTIR results proved the structure of the telechelic PCEC with triethoxysilane-propyl end groups synthesized in the first step. Then the PCEC-CaO-SiO2hybrid material was synthesized by Sol-gel method. The chemical link between the functionalized polymer and the organic components prevent the hybrid materials brittle crack. The compressive strength was increased with the inorganic contents increasing in the hybrid materials. The hydrophilic PEG contents of PCEC accelerate the hydroxyapatite deposition on the hybrid materials after it was soaked in the SBF for a period of time.

Novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials were developed as LED sealants. Polysilsesquioxane with an -SH group (PSQ-SH) and acrylic monomer were selected as the inorganic and organic components, respectively. Trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM), which is a trifunctional monomer, was selected as an acrylic monomer, and curing of the material was performed by the thiol-ene reaction. The LED was sealed using the prepared PSQ-SH/TRIM hybrid material (PTH), and a light emission test was performed. However, cracks occurred in the hybrid material during lighting. Therefore, ditrimethylol propane tetraacrylate (DTMPTA), which is a tetrafunctional monomer, was selected for the first time to prepare a PSQ-SH/DTMPA hybrid material (PDH) in order to enhance the strength and heat resistance of the material. The characteristics of the novel PDH were evaluated and compared with those of PTH. Specifically, the heat resistance was evaluated by confirming the onset temperature of weight reduction using thermogravimetry-differential thermal analyzer (TG-DTA) analysis, and the mechanical strength was also evaluated by bonding the glass substrates with a hybrid material and measuring the sealing strength. In conclusion, it was possible to suppress crack generation during lighting by using PDH instead of PTH in the light emission test.

This work successfully prepared an UV curable organic-inorganic hybrid material consisting of organic modified colloidal silica. Applications of UV curable organic-inorganic hybrid materials include abrasion resistant coatings, photo-patternable thin films and waveguides. Colloidal silica containing reactive functional groups were also prepared by reacting organic silane and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) using sol-gel process. In addition, the efficiency of grafting organic moiety onto silica nanoparticles was investigated by applying TGA and FTIR techniques. Experimental results indicated a strong interdependence between surface modification efficiency and solution pH. Acrylate-SiO2 hybrid formation could result in a shifting of thermal degradation temperature of organic component from about 200°C to near 400°C. In addition, the stability of organic modified colloidal silica in UV curable formula and the physical properties of resulting coatings were discussed. Furthermore, the morphology of organic modified colloidal silica was investigated by performing TEM and SEM studies‥

The term “element” is typically used in two distinct senses. First it is taken to mean isolated simple substances such as the green gas chlorine or the yellow solid sulphur. In some languages, including English, it is also used to denote an underlying abstract concept that subsumes simple substances but possesses no properties as such. The allotropes and isotopes of carbon, for example, all represent elements in the sense of simple substances. However, the unique position for the element carbon in the periodic table refers to the abstract sense of “element.” The dual definition of elements proposed by the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry contrasts an abstract meaning and an operational one. Nevertheless, the philosophical aspects of this notion are not fully captured by the IUPAC definition, despite the fact that they were crucial for the construction of the periodic table. This pivotal chemical notion remains ambiguous and such ambiguity raises problems at the epistemic, logical, and educational levels. These aspects are discussed throughout the book, from different perspectives. This collective book provides an overview of the current state of the debate on the notion of chemical element. Its authors are historians of chemistry, philosophers of chemistry, and chemists with epistemological and educational concerns.
