Sensor faults frequently occur in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operation, leading to incomplete monitoring or poor control of the plant. Reliable operation of the WWTP considerably depends on the aeration control system, which is essentially assisted by the dissolved oxygen (DO) sensor. Results on the detection of different DO sensor faults, such as bias, drift, wrong gain, loss of accuracy, fixed value, or complete failure, were investigated based on Principal Components Analysis (PCA). The PCA was considered together with two statistical approaches, i.e., the Hotelling’s T2 and the Squared Prediction Error (SPE). Data used in the study were generated using the previously calibrated first-principle Activated Sludge Model no.1 for the Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic (A2O) reactors configuration. The equation-based model was complemented with control loops for DO concentration control in the aerobic reactor and nitrates concentration control in the anoxic reactor. The PCA data-driven model was successfully used for the detection of the six investigated DO sensor faults. The statistical detection approaches were compared in terms of promptness, effectiveness, and accuracy. The obtained results revealed the way faults originating from DO sensor malfunction can be detected and the efficiency of the detection approaches for the automatically controlled WWTP.

In this paper we present the application of adaptive predictive expert controllers to dissolved oxygen (DO) control in the aerobic reactors of a wastewater treatment plant. The control system described in this paper consists of adaptive predictive expert control loops complemented by optimisation logic. The controllers successfully cope with nonlinearity and changing operating conditions of the process by predicting the evolution of the controlled variable and adapting to changes in the process dynamics. This results in more precise and stable DO control, offering many benefits. The complementary optimisation logic maintains the air pressure in the common collector at the lowest possible level, enabling adequate DO control and thus considerably reducing energy consumption.

The objective of this work is to decrease energy consumption of the aeration system at a mid-size conventional wastewater treatment plant in the south of Sweden where aeration consumes 44% of the total energy consumption of the plant. By designing an energy optimised aeration system (with aeration grids, blowers, controlling valves) and then operating it with a new aeration control system (dissolved oxygen cascade control and most open valve logic) one can save energy. The concept has been tested in full scale by comparing two treatment lines: a reference line (consisting of old fine bubble tube diffusers, old lobe blowers, simple DO control) with a test line (consisting of new Sanitaire Silver Series Low Pressure fine bubble diffusers, a new screw blower and the Flygt aeration control system). Energy savings with the new aeration system measured as Aeration Efficiency was 65%. Furthermore, 13% of the total energy consumption of the whole plant, or 21 000 €/year, could be saved when the tested line was operated with the new aeration system.

Abstract A case of filamentous activated sludge bulking was investigated at an extended aeration plant treating wastes from a highway service centre. The purpose of the study was to find an effective control measure for the bulking and, if possible, to determine the cause of the bulking condition. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects upon bulking of: (a) a controlled copper dosage to the mixed liquor, (b) variations in the organic loading rate, and (c) maintenance of high and low dissolved oxygen concentrations in the mixed liquor. The microorganism responsible for the bulking condition was tentatively identified as Sphaerotilus natans. Extensive growths of these bacteria occurred in the sludge when the mixed liquor dissolved oxygen concentration dropped below 0.5 mg/1. Such dissolved oxygen levels had frequently occurred at this plant due to the use of timed aeration cycles and the use of insufficient air supply during peak loading periods. Variations in organic loading rates were found to have no adverse effect on sludge settleability. When bulking was slight, the condition could be improved by increasing the dissolved oxygen level to 1.5 mg/1, or more. The rate at which the filamentous growths could be eliminated from a highly filamentous sludge by increased aeration was very slow, but could be greatly increased by the simultaneous feeding of copper to the mixed liquor at a dosage rate of 1.0 mg/1, based on the raw sewage flows.

The authors have been developing a hierarchical control system for the activated sludge process which consists of an upper level system controlling long-term seasonal variations, a control system of intermediate level aiming at optimization of the process and a control system of lower level controlling diurnal changes or hourly fluctuations. The control system using the multi-variable statistical model is one of the most appropriate control systems based on the modern control theory, for applying the lower level control of the activated sludge process. This paper introduces our efforts for developing the reliable data acquisition system, the control experiments applying the AR-model, one of the statistical models which were conducted at a pilot plant and present studies on the system identification and control at a field sewage treatment plant.

AbstractIn this paper, a new approach is proposed to control the dynamic response of a landing gear system subjected to runway force, both on heavy landing conditions and at the taxiing process. The mathematical model of the system is used in a way that covers nonlinear dynamics characteristics of landing gear and nonlinear/nonaffine property of the external actuator. The operation of the landing gear system and its components are described briefly. The desired control system includes two different interior loops for displacement and force control. The inner loop determines the actuator force and the outer loop performs the displacement control. A lumped uncertainty is considered in both displacement and force control loops that represent uncertainties including parametric errors, measurement noises, unmodeled dynamics, disturbance due to runway excitation, and other disturbances. The direct method of Lyapunov is utilized for asymptotic stability analysis of the robust nonlinear control system (RNCS). This system is simulated in MATLAB software and the performance of the proposed controller is analyzed exactly. Besides, the results are compared with a passive system and conventional PID control. The comparison indicates that RNCS works better and more precisely. This method can reduce vibrations at touchdown and taxiing and effectively overcome uncertainty and provide well aircraft handling by decreasing the changes in tire force.

The objective of this study is to develop an automatic control system for dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH of the activated sludge process in a coke wastewater treatment plant. A discrete type autotuned proportional-integral (PI) controller using an auto-regressive exogenous (ARX) model as a process model was developed to maintain the DO concentration in aerators by controlling the speed of surface aerators. Also a nonlinear pH controller using the titration curve was used to control the pH of influent wastewater. This control system was tested in a pilot scale plant. During this pilot plant experiment, there was small deviation of pH and the electric power consumption of surface aerators was reduced up to 70% with respect to the full operation when the DO set point was 2 mg/l. For real plant operation with this system, the discrete PI controller showed good tracking for set point change. The electricity saving was more than 40% of the electricity consumption when considering surface aerators. As a result of maintaining the DO constantly at the set point by the automatic control system, the fluctuation of effluent quality was decreased and overall improvement of the effluent water quality was achieved.
