One of the most important conditions for the effectiveness of science is the motivation of academic staff of universities as key and direct producers of new knowledge. The purpose of the article was to substantiate the factors of efficiency in managing the publication activity of Russian universities. The nature and density of the relationship between the number of scientific publications and the level of citation of 19 leading countries in the world, including Russia, were determined by means of statistical analysis and the method of clusters. It has been empirically proven that the priority model for the development of publication activity should be an intensive model, which aims at improving the quality of scientific publications and the level of their citation. Moreover, a survey of 1573 young scientists (under the age of 39) and 2461 senior scientists from 14 universities in Russia was conducted. It investigated the factors of effective management of the publication activity at Russian universities. The results contribute to a better understanding on how Russian universities can activate and foster the flow of high-quality publication outputs by their researchers.

The literature on the consequences of academic inbreeding shows ambiguous results: some papers show that inbreeding positively influences research productivity measured by the quantity and quality of publications, while others demonstrate the opposite effect. There are contradictory results both in the studies of different countries and within countries. This variety of results makes it impossible to transfer the findings from one academic system to another, and in Russia this problem has been under-explored. This paper focuses on the relationship between inbreeding and publication activity among Russian faculty. The research was conducted using the data from the ‘Monitoring of educational markets and organizations’ survey. The results show that there is no significant effect of academic inbreeding on publication productivity: no substantial and robust differences in publication activity between inbreds and non-inbred have been found. The paper finishes with the discussion of possible explanations inherent in the Russian academic system.

The bibliometric method has proven to be a powerful tool for the analysis of scientific publications, in such a way that allows rating the quality of the knowledge generating process, as well as its impact on firm´s environment. This article presents a comparison between two powerful bibliographic databases in terms of their coverage and the usefulness of their content. The comparison starts with a subject associated to the relationship between resources and capabilities. The outcomes show that the search results differ between both databases. The Web Of Science (WOS), has a greater coverage than SCOPUS has.  It also has a greater impact in terms of most cited authors and publications. The search results in the WOS yield articles from 2001, while Scopus yields articles from 1976, however, some of the latter are inconsistent with the topic being searched. The analysis points to a lack of studies regarding resources as foundations of firm´s capabilities; as a result, new research on this field is suggested.

The article deals with the results of the analysis of international and domestic experience in the use of network services, which can independently evaluate the quality of electronic publications and scientists’ publication activity. It can be achieved by the analysis of the values of scientometric indicators included in the bibliometric open electronic systems. This approach is associated with certain risks of objective evaluation of researchers’ scientific activity efficiency. The conditions for the inclusion of scientific publications in the search systems like Google Scholar are considered. It is concluded that the scientometric base, which is today an international and widely used in practice, should be developed to provide a more adequate reflection of the character and level of scientists’ scientific activity, as well as their personal contribution to the development of certain areas of science.

The article presents the results of a study, the aim of which is to investigate the dynamics of the development of Russian higher education institutions based on an analysis of their performance indicators. The sample includes 535 universities from 80 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. It presents the results of the clustering of universities on the basis of changes in indicators of six variables characterizing the key areas of activity of universities for the period from 2013/2014 to 2017/2018 academic years. The characteristics of each cluster are described, an inter-cluster comparison of quantitative indicators of the activities of universities is presented.As a result of the calculations of the average annual growth rates of six key indicators characterizing the activities of universities, fve clusters were identifed that differ in their development trajectories. Thus, the universities that belong to Cluster 1 over a fve-year period retained or improved their positions in the main areas of educational activity and managed to maintain income growth at an average level.However, their indicators in such areas as international and research activities, as well as infrastructure development (provision of educational and laboratory facilities) have decreased. In universities from clusters 2 and 3, all performance indicators changed in a fairly balanced way. At the same time, the indicator of an increase in the internationalization of the students’ body was signifcantly higher in Cluster 2, while educational organizations from Cluster 3 showed a signifcant increase in the publication activity of academic staff.The results of the activities of universities in Cluster 4 were positive in all considered areas. This cluster had the highest average annual growth rates in the average Unifed State Exam (USE) score and publication activity of the academic staff. Educational organizations from Cluster 5, on the one hand, achieved the best results in attracting foreign students, increasing the proftability of their activities and the provision of teaching and laboratory facilities but, on the other hand, their average annual growth rate of the average USE score has signifcantly decreased.The study represents one of the frst attempts to cluster Russian universities based on the analysis of changes in their performance indicators. Previous studies on the clustering of universities were mainly based on the analysis of one-time indicators. The approach proposed by the author makes it possible to compare indicators of the dynamics of development of higher educational institutions of different size and scope. Further research in this area could be aimed at analyzing a larger number of performance indicators of universities and studying in detail their strategies for a deeper understanding of the reasons for the differences in their effectiveness.

Before contributing new knowledge, individuals must attain requisite background knowledge or skills through schooling, training, practice, and experience. Given limited time, individuals often choose either to focus on few areas, where they build deep expertise, or to delve less deeply and distribute their attention and efforts across several areas. In this paper we measure the relationship between the narrowness of focus and the quality of contribution across a range of both traditional and recent knowledge sharing media, including scholarly articles, patents, Wikipedia, and online question and answer forums. Across all systems, we observe a small but significant positive correlation between focus and quality.

The principal concern was the relationship between the higher education sector and engineering employers and the need for higher education institutions to recognize and deliver engineering graduates with sufficient ‘added value’ to be capable of quickly adding to the value of an engineering company. Measuring the quality of teaching and research in UK universities, a key factor in adding value to students, remains a problem area for the academic staff.

This study sought to determine the relationship between monitoring and evaluation (M&E) practices and academic staff motivation in higher education, from a Rwandan perspective. Particularly, the study aimed at describing the M&E practices applied, assessed how quality of feedback affects academic staff motivation, and determined the relationship between M&E practices and academic staff motivation. The study employed a mixed-methods approach to collect data from academic staff. A total of 105 faculties were sampled. The study established that M&E practices, including staff self-evaluation, students–staff evaluation, peer evaluation, and evaluation by supervisor, are applied at varying emphasis. Furthermore, both the supervisees and supervisors agreed that the quality of feedback provided during evaluation is fairly effective, although recognition of their performance is rarely appreciated. It was further established that weak to moderate correlations exist between M&E practices and academic staff motivation with “ r” varying from 0.268 to 0.4460. Although some indications for the direction of influence have been generated, the study, however, does not permit one-way final conclusion about the effect of any of the M&E practices to academic staff motivation. Based on the findings, this study recommends that policy makers design a policy on M&E, which would guide supervisors in M&E exercise.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the factors which facilitate the increase of effectiveness of university education and determination of perspectives of their management for provision of maximization of effectiveness of university education by the example of modern Russia. Design/methodology/approach The authors define the notion and sense of effectiveness of university education under the conditions of market economy, conduct theoretical review, classify factors which facilitate the increase of effectiveness of university education, and conduct regression and correlation analyses of influence of various factors on effectiveness of university education. Findings As a result of the research, the authors come to the conclusion that the volume of financing of science is not a factor of efficiency of scientific activities of Russian universities; the most important factors of effectiveness of university education are the number of universities and quantity of academic staff. Perspectives of provision of maximization of university education effectiveness in modern Russia are related to management of human capital – academic staff of universities – and finding a balance of quantitative growth and increase of quality of university education. Practical implications Practical significance of the conducted research consists in the fact that its results could be used during development and conduct of the state policy for the management of effectiveness of the system of university education in modern Russia. Originality/value The research has high theoretical significance, as it contributes to the development of the concept of effectiveness and understanding of foundations of management of the system of university education under the conditions of market economy.

The restaurant concept plays an important role in establishing and running a successful food business. Maintaining the quality of foods is an important criterion that service providers must look at to attract new customers and retain existing customers on the premises. By considering the importance of the quality of foods and customers in the restaurant industry, this study examines the relationship between the quality of food attributes and customer satisfaction. The research utilized a quantitative approach to conducting the study. Universiti Utara Malaysia students who visited The Lake restaurant are chosen as the unit of analysis. The close-ended questionnaires were distributed to the students to obtain the data for this study. In order to conduct the survey, the researchers used Google form as a tool. The questionnaires were distributed by Google form using the purposive sampling method. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed among the students, and 364 usable questionnaires proceeded for the descriptive and inferential analyses of the study. The study found that there is a positive relationship between food quality attributes (freshness, taste, healthy options, variety of menu, presentations, and temperature) and customers' satisfaction. The findings of the study posed significance and added new knowledge to the practitioners and academicians.

This study was conducted to analyze the quality of e-commerce websites, find out which items need improvement, and make improvement design e-commerce websites. This study uses the kano model and Importance Performance Analysis approach based on 7 dimensions with 39 attributes. This study used the survey results from 103 respondents who regularly use the e-commerce website Tokopedia.com. The results of the questionnaire through the validity and reliability tests were used to analyze the reliability of items and the feasibility of the results of the questionnaire. After that, the results of the questionnaire through the corellation and hypothesis tests were used to know the relationship between variables. The findings show that 7 attributes influence customer satisfaction. However, the findings are still nowhere near the expectations. Thus, it requires being the focus of improvement. Improvements in design of 7 attributes in the form of House of Quality with 6 technical features needed to improve the quality of e-commerce website Tokopedia.com. Therefore, effective management strategies can be applied to overcome the intense competition in the e-commerce industry.
