The combination of satellite direct reception and terrestrial 5G infrastructure is essential to guarantee coverage in satellite based-Internet of Things, mainly in smart cities where buildings can cause high power losses. In this paper, we propose an accurate and fast graphical method for predicting the satellite coverage in urban areas and SatCom on-the-move scenarios. The aim is to provide information that could be useful in the IoT network planning process, e.g., in the decision of how many terrestrial repeaters are really needed and where they should be placed. Experiments show that the shadowed areas predicted by the method correspond almost perfectly with experimental data measured from an Eutelsat satellite in the urban area of Barcelona.

The smart city transport concept is viewed as a future vision aiming to undertake investigations on the urban planning process and to construct policy-pathways for achieving future targets. Therefore, this paper sets out three visions for the year 2035 which bring about a radical change in the level of green transport systems (often called walking, cycling, and public transport) in Turkish urban areas. A participatory visioning technique was structured according to a three-stage technique: (i) Extensive online comprehensive survey, in which potential transport measures were researched for their relevance in promoting smart transport systems in future Turkish urban areas; (ii) semi-structured interviews, where transport strategy suggestions were developed in the context of the possible imaginary urban areas and their associated contextual description of the imaginary urban areas for each vision; (iii) participatory workshops, where an innovative method was developed to explore various creative future choices and alternatives. Overall, this paper indicates that the content of the future smart transport visions was reasonable, but such visions need a considerable degree of consensus and radical approaches for tackling them. The findings offer invaluable insights to researchers inquiring about the smart transport field, and policy-makers considering applying those into practice in their local urban areas.

Background and Objective: With the increase in populations in urban areas, there is an increase in pollution also. Air pollution is one of the challenging environmental issues in smart cities. Real-time monitoring of air quality can help the administration to take appropriate decisions on time. Development in the Internet of Things based sensors has changed the way to monitor air quality. Methods: In this paper, we have applied two-stage regressions. In the first stage, ten regression algorithms (Decision Tree, Random Forest, Elastic Net, Adaboost, Extra Tree, Linear Regression, Lasso, XGBoost, Light GBM, AdaBoost, and Multi-Layer Perceptron) is applied and in second stage best four algorithms are picked and stacking ensemble algorithms is applied using python to predict the PM2.5 pollutants in air. Data set of five Chinese cities (Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenyang) has taken into consideration and compared based on MAE (Mean Absolute Error), RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), and R2 parameters. Results and Conclusion: We observed that out of ten regression algorithms applied extra tree algorithm is giving the highest performance on all the five datasets, and stacking further improves the performance. Feature importance for Sheyang, and Beijing city is computed using three regression algorithms, and we found the four most important features are Humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and dew point.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the significance of the internet of things (IoT) system for smart cities and deliberate on the technological aspects involved in developing smart cities along with the framework, impact and benefits of IoT for smart cities. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on the review and synthesis of the papers on the broader areas of IoT for the application and implication towards the smart cities. The prime focus of this paper is to realize the IoT systems for smart city’s development and implementation of various technologies in the context of the Indian environment. Findings The outcome of the paper explores the highlights of the importance of the IoT system, including the technological framework, impact and benefits for smart cities. The outcome also highlights the application of IoT for smart cities. This paper provides direction regarding future degrees, potential conceivable outcomes and issues concerning the technological side of smart cities. IoT can change the lives of the people and support evolving urban areas for developing smart cities in India. Originality/value The paper deliberates on the novel techno-managerial approach towards the endeavour of smart cities using the IoT.

The population of the Earth is moving towards urban areas forming smart cities (SCs). Waste management is a component of SCs. We consider a SC which contains a distribution of waste bins and a distribution of waste trucks located in the SC sectors. Bins and trucks are enabled with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and actuators. Prior approaches focus mainly on the dynamic scheduling and routing issues emerging from IoT-enabled waste management. However, less research has been done in the area of the stochastic reassignment process during the four seasons of the year over a period of two years. In this paper we aim to stochastically reassign trucks to collect waste from bins through time. We treat this problem with a multi-agent system for stochastic analyses.

Positive energy districts (PEDs) are seen as a promising pathway to facilitating energy transition. PEDs are urban areas composed of different buildings and public spaces with local energy production, where the total annual energy balance must be positive. Urban areas consist of a mix of different buildings, such as households and service sector consumers (offices, restaurants, shops, cafes, supermarkets), which have a different annual energy demand and production, as well as a different consumption profile. This paper presents a data modeling approach to estimating the annual energy balance of different types of consumer categories in urban areas and proposes a methodology to extrapolate energy demands from specific building types to the aggregated level of an urban area and vice versa. By dividing an urban area into clusters of different consumer categories, depending on parameters such as surface area, building type and energy interventions, energy demands are estimated. The presented modeling approach is used to model and calculate the energy balance and CO2 emissions in two PED areas of the City of Groningen (The Netherlands) proposed in the Smart City H2020 MAKING CITY project.

Modern trends in the formation of urban development are based primarily on the extent to which the territory of a city can be attractive for investors, interested people in general and public administration systems. When regarding programs for the development of urban areas in the structure of sustainable development, it is necessary to highlight the methods of forming an attractive image of a city, which is considered a marketing tool. Understanding the possibilities for the development of an urban area requires the formation of tools for spatial marketing and opportunities for the establishment of measures for the development of individual tools of communication between city authorities and the external environment. The novelty of the research is determined by the structural feature of the formation of an integrated method of using marketing tools to promote the image of a city in the informational, social, and cultural aspects. The authors show the tools for implementing the marketing strategy of the urban area as elements of sustainable development. Stakeholders of sustainable development are shown not only local management structures but also global investment funds and transnational corporations. The practical significance of the study is determined by the possibility of forming based on an urban area, which is marked by the presence of sustainable development markers, innovative and science-intensive centres, and analytical corporations. The formation of development centres is also possible through the creation of smart cities.

From earliest cities to the present, spatial division into residential zones and neighbourhoods is the universal feature of urban areas. This study explored issue of measuring neighbourhoods through spatial autocorrelation method based on Moran's I index in respect of achieving to best neighbourhoods' model for forming cities smarter. The research carried out by selection of 35 neighbourhoods only within central part of traditional city of Kerman in Iran. The results illustrate, 75% of neighbourhoods' area in the inner city of Kerman had clustered pattern, and it shows reduction in Moran's index is associated with disproportional distribution of density and increasing in Moran's I and Z-score have monotonic relation with more dense areas and clustered pattern. It may be more efficient for urban planner to focus on spatial autocorrelation to foster neighbourhood cohesion rather than emphasis on suburban area. It is recommended characteristics of historic neighbourhoods can be successfully linked to redevelopment plans toward making city smarter, and also people's quality of life can be related to the way that neighbourhoods' patterns are defined.
