This paper deals with the development of a realtime structural health monitoring system for airframe structures to localize and estimate the magnitude of the loads causing deflections to the critical components, such as wings. To this end, a framework that is based on artificial neural networks is developed where features that are extracted from a depth camera are utilized. The localization of the load is treated as a multinomial logistic classification problem and the load magnitude estimation as a logistic regression problem. The neural networks trained for classification and regression are preceded with an autoencoder, through which maximum informative data at a much smaller scale are extracted from the depth features. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by an experimental study performed on a composite unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wing subject to concentrated and distributed loads, and the results obtained by the proposed method are superior when compared with a method based on Castigliano’s theorem.

It is shown that it is expedient to interpret post-industrial local conflicts as “wars of the values” due to the fact that the result of the collision, as shown, in particular, by the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh in October 2020, is largely determined by the technical and economic indicators of the robotic means of the warfare, used by the warring parties. The widespread use of the robotic systems, in particular, leads to the fact that it is advisable to significantly transform the approaches to their development, the production and subsequent combat use. In particular, it is advisable to use the physical implementations of the neural networks (more broadly, the artificial intelligence systems), each element of which (analogue of the neuron) is a relatively independent element (for example, the cheapest unmanned aerial vehicle). This approach uses one of the basic properties of a neural network its ability to perform basic functions even when a significant part of the elements is lost. The survivability of such a system will certainly be higher in comparison with any apparatus made as a physical whole. Moreover, the inclusion of a large number of the cheapest false (or partially false) targets in the combat neural network makes its suppression economically difficult due to the high consumption of the ammunition (in any case, existing types). It is significant that in the “war of values” a significant part of the costs falls on the development and implementation of the innovations in production. The transition to the use of physically distributed systems (combat neural networks) makes it possible to drastically reduce the costs of the prototyping (for example, cheap UAVs based on mini-airships), which makes it possible to maximize the intellectual and creative potential of the technical specialties students directly within the educational process. The feasibility of this approach has been proven in our works on the business educational ecosystems.

Electric companies face flow control and inventory obstacles such as reliability, outlays, and time-consuming tasks. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) combined with computational vision approaches can process image classification in warehouse management applications to tackle this problem. This study uses synthetic and real images applied to CNNs to deal with classification of inventory items. The results are compared to seek the neural networks that better suit this application. The methodology consists of fine-tuning several CNNs on Red–Green–Blue (RBG) and Red–Green–Blue-Depth (RGB-D) synthetic and real datasets, using the best architecture of each domain in a blended ensemble approach. The proposed blended ensemble approach was not yet explored in such an application, using RGB and RGB-D data, from synthetic and real domains. The use of a synthetic dataset improved accuracy, precision, recall and f1-score in comparison with models trained only on the real domain. Moreover, the use of a blend of DenseNet and Resnet pipelines for colored and depth images proved to outperform accuracy, precision and f1-score performance indicators over single CNNs, achieving an accuracy measurement of 95.23%. The classification task is a real logistics engineering problem handled by computer vision and artificial intelligence, making full use of RGB and RGB-D images of synthetic and real domains, applied in an approach of blended CNN pipelines.

The goal of the present research is to contribute to the detection of tax fraud concerning personal income tax returns (IRPF, in Spanish) filed in Spain, through the use of Machine Learning advanced predictive tools, by applying Multilayer Perceptron neural network (MLP) models. The possibilities springing from these techniques have been applied to a broad range of personal income return data supplied by the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IEF). The use of the neural networks enabled taxpayer segmentation as well as calculation of the probability concerning an individual taxpayer’s propensity to attempt to evade taxes. The results showed that the selected model has an efficiency rate of 84.3%, implying an improvement in relation to other models utilized in tax fraud detection. The proposal can be generalized to quantify an individual’s propensity to commit fraud with regards to other kinds of taxes. These models will support tax offices to help them arrive at the best decisions regarding action plans to combat tax fraud.

Neural networks can approximate data because of owning many compact non-linear layers. In high-dimensional space, due to the curse of dimensionality, data distribution becomes sparse, causing that it is difficulty to provide sufficient information. Hence, the task becomes even harder if neural networks approximate data in high-dimensional space. To address this issue, according to the Lipschitz condition, the two deviations, i.e., the deviation of the neural networks trained using high-dimensional functions, and the deviation of high-dimensional functions approximation data, are derived. This purpose of doing this is to improve the ability of approximation high-dimensional space using neural networks. Experimental results show that the neural networks trained using high-dimensional functions outperforms that of using data in the capability of approximation data in high-dimensional space. We find that the neural networks trained using high-dimensional functions more suitable for high-dimensional space than that of using data, so that there is no need to retain sufficient data for neural networks training. Our findings suggests that in high-dimensional space, by tuning hidden layers of neural networks, this is hard to have substantial positive effects on improving precision of approximation data.

This paper proposed a novel method for leaf classification and recognition. In the method, the moment invariant and fractal dimension were regarded as the characteristic parameters of the plant leaf. In order to extract the representative characteristic parameters, pretreatment of the leaf images, including RGB-gray converting, image binarization and leafstalk removing. The extracted leaf characteristic parameters were further utilized as training sets to train the neural networks. The proposed method was proved effectively to reach a recognition rate about 92% for most of the testing leaf samples

The localization of multiple scattering objects is performed while using scattered waves. An up-to-date approach: neural networks are used to estimate the corresponding locations. In the scattering phenomenon under investigation, we assume known incident plane waves, fully reflecting balls with known diameters and measurement data of the scattered wave on one fixed segment. The training data are constructed while using the simulation package μ-diff in Matlab. The structure of the neural networks, which are widely used for similar purposes, is further developed. A complex locally connected layer is the main compound of the proposed setup. With this and an appropriate preprocessing of the training data set, the number of parameters can be kept at a relatively low level. As a result, using a relatively large training data set, the unknown locations of the objects can be estimated effectively.

Despite significant progress in object detection tasks, remote sensing image target detection is still challenging owing to complex backgrounds, large differences in target sizes, and uneven distribution of rotating objects. In this study, we consider model accuracy, inference speed, and detection of objects at any angle. We also propose a RepVGG-YOLO network using an improved RepVGG model as the backbone feature extraction network, which performs the initial feature extraction from the input image and considers network training accuracy and inference speed. We use an improved feature pyramid network (FPN) and path aggregation network (PANet) to reprocess feature output by the backbone network. The FPN and PANet module integrates feature maps of different layers, combines context information on multiple scales, accumulates multiple features, and strengthens feature information extraction. Finally, to maximize the detection accuracy of objects of all sizes, we use four target detection scales at the network output to enhance feature extraction from small remote sensing target pixels. To solve the angle problem of any object, we improved the loss function for classification using circular smooth label technology, turning the angle regression problem into a classification problem, and increasing the detection accuracy of objects at any angle. We conducted experiments on two public datasets, DOTA and HRSC2016. Our results show the proposed method performs better than previous methods.

This paper presents an efficient neural network-based method for fault diagnosis in photovoltaic arrays. The proposed method was elaborated on three main steps: the data-feeding step, the fault-modeling step, and the decision step. The first step consists of feeding the real meteorological and electrical data to the neural networks, namely solar irradiance, panel temperature, photovoltaic-current, and photovoltaic-voltage. The second step consists of modeling a healthy mode of operation and five additional faulty operational modes; the modeling process is carried out using two networks of artificial neural networks. From this step, six classes are obtained, where each class corresponds to a predefined model, namely, the faultless scenario and five faulty scenarios. The third step involves the diagnosis decision about the system’s state. Based on the results from the above step, two probabilistic neural networks will classify each generated data according to the six classes. The obtained results show that the developed method can effectively detect different types of faults and classify them. Besides, this method still achieves high performances even in the presence of noises. It provides a diagnosis even in the presence of data injected at reduced real-time, which proves its robustness.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) undoubtedly pose many security challenges. We need only look to the December 2018 Gatwick Airport incident for an example of the disruption UAVs can cause. In total, 1000 flights were grounded for 36 h over the Christmas period which was estimated to cost over 50 million pounds. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach which considers UAV detection as an imagery classification problem. We consider signal representations Power Spectral Density (PSD); Spectrogram, Histogram and raw IQ constellation as graphical images presented to a deep Convolution Neural Network (CNN) ResNet50 for feature extraction. Pre-trained on ImageNet, transfer learning is utilised to mitigate the requirement for a large signal dataset. We evaluate performance through machine learning classifier Logistic Regression. Three popular UAVs are classified in different modes; switched on; hovering; flying; flying with video; and no UAV present, creating a total of 10 classes. Our results, validated with 5-fold cross validation and an independent dataset, show PSD representation to produce over 91% accuracy for 10 classifications. Our paper treats UAV detection as an imagery classification problem by presenting signal representations as images to a ResNet50, utilising the benefits of transfer learning and outperforming previous work in the field.
