During the almost 27 years of its existence, the business ecosystem research has developed a substantial level of ambiguity and multifacetedness. Because to the technological advancements that promote interconnectedness and value co-creation, the field has consequently spun off into more domain-specific branches, such as the arena of digital business ecosystems that are driven by Internet of Things (IoT). Nonetheless, despite the efforts to mend the theoretical foundations and to close the gap between academia and empirical practice, the absolute majority of IoT-driven digital business ecosystem literature follows the trend of conceptual randomness while expanding the volume of publications exponentially. Therefore, in order to address this unfavourable increase in random adoption of distinct concepts that ultimately refer to the same subject matter, the author encourages other scholars involved in the research field of IoT-driven digital business ecosystems to make extended efforts and support the external validity of their research (as well as the relevance of the research stream as a whole) by bounding the IoT-driven digital business ecosystems on a rigorous basis through deploying the extant theory in a careful and appropriate manner. Via a thorough examination of the theoretical fundaments that underpin the concept of IoT-driven digital business ecosystem, and based on a concise thematic review of corresponding literature published until September 2020, this article articulates logic for viewing the conceptual hierarchy within the business ecosystem research and proposes six literature-based recommendations for developing further IoT-driven digital business ecosystem (DBE) research in a rigorous way.

A new research stream emerged in the 2000s dedicated to flexible work arrangements in public and private organizations, called “new ways of working” (NWW). This article aims to examine NWW from both a theoretical and empirical perspective, focusing on outcomes of this new concept and the debate between “mutual gains” vs. “conflicting outcomes.” Through a literature review, it examines this research field’s innovation and its rather vague theoretical foundations. Findings demonstrate that NWW definitions are diverse and somewhat imprecise, leading to fragmented research designs and findings; the research stream’s theoretical foundations should be better addressed. Findings also highlight the current lack of empirical data, which therefore does not allow any real conclusions on NWW’s effects on employees’ and organizations’ well-being and performance.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the emerging drivers of the economy that transforms the business landscape and forms of collaboration and value creation. In this study, we performed a Delphi-based study to explore the digital business ecosystem (DBE) of IoT in emerging economies, focusing on power dynamics among actors, the processes of value co-creation, topologies, and critical success factors affecting the health of the ecosystem. We conducted two panels of a three-round Delphi study from 2017 through 2019 among Iranian IoT experts. This study identifies two types of the digital business ecosystems surrounding IoT in Iran. One type comprises only pseudo-private companies that have strong interactions with government organizations and state-owned banks. The other type of digital business ecosystem surrounding IoT technology comprises start-ups and private small and medium companies that have no interaction with pseudo-private companies. The interaction of start-ups and Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is mainly with universities. The study shows that pseudo-private companies play a dominant role in the Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Government (B2G) markets while SMEs and start-ups have a dominant role in the B2C market and promote creativity and innovation in the Business to Customer (B2C) market. This study extends the literature on  digital business ecosystems with a focus on the health of the DBEs of IoT technologies and the potential for future innovation in the digital economy.

Digital business ecosystems and platforms have emerged as collaborative tools, but few studies have investigated the competitive value that defines winners in the competition among platforms. This study examines the effects of experiential fit on identification, cocreation reward, and cocreation-supportive behaviours by considering the theories of organisational fluidity, service-dominant logic, and social support. Data collected from 1,090 respondents are analysed using AMOS and SPSS. The service-dominant approach is incorporated with a dynamic view of individual value fit to explore user identification, rewards, and cocreation value. The statistical results reveal that a mobile-based ecosystem may provide value convergence for its users (i.e., experiential fit) and thus enable value reservation (i.e., identification), achievement (i.e., cocreation reward), and value dissemination (i.e., cocreation-supportive behaviours). This study offers a new dynamic approach regarding cocreation-supportive behaviours for the digital business ecosystem literature

Sustainable energy based hybrid microgrids are advantageous in meeting constantly increasing energy demands. Conversely, the intermittent nature of renewable sources represents the main challenge to achieving a reliable supply. Hence, load frequency regulation by adjusting the amount of power shared between subsystems is considered as a promising research field. Therefore, this paper presents a new stratagem for frequency regulation by developing a novel two stage integral-proportional-derivative with one plus integral (IPD-(1+I)) controller for multi sources islanded microgrid system (MS-IμGS). The proposed stratagem has been tested in an MS-IμGS comprising of a wind turbine, parabolic trough, biodiesel generators, solid-oxide fuel cell, and electric water heater. The proposed model under different scenarios is simulated in MATLAB environment considering the real-time recorded wind data. A recently developed sine-cosine algorithmic technique (SCA) has been leveraged for optimal regulation of frequency in the considered microgrid. To identify the supremacy of the proposed technique, comparative studies with other classical controllers with different optimization techniques have been performed. From the comparison, it is clearly evident that, SCA-(IPD-(1+I)) controller gives better performance over other considered stratagems in terms of various time domain specific parameters, such as peak deviations (overshoot, undershoot) and settling time. Finally, the robustness of the proposed stratagem is evaluated by conducting sensitivity analysis under ±30% parametric variations and +30% load demand. The lab tests results validate the operation of the proposed system and show that it can be used to regulate the frequency in stand-alone microgrids with a high penetration of renewable energy.

In Verbindung mit einem Wandel der Bedürfnisse führt sie darüber hinaus auch zu einem veränderten Nutzerverhalten und Nutzenverständnis der Kunden. Zur flexiblen und schnellen Umsetzung von passgenau individualisierten, oft branchenübergreifenden Wertangeboten und der Absicherung des Kundenzugangs wird es zukünftig wettbewerbsentscheidend sein, sich im richtigen Business Ecosystem – also der Gruppe von Akteuren die interagieren müssen, um ein entsprechendes Wertangebot zu realisieren und den entsprechenden Kundenzugang haben – zu bewegen und dieses mitzugestalten. Der Beitrag beschreibt das grundsätzliche Vorgehen zur Identifizierung und Auswahl relevanter Business Ecosystems sowie deren strategische und operative Einbindung in ein Unternehmen.   The ongoing digitization leads to new and converging product benefits and more efficient processes. In connection with a change in needs it also leads to a change in user behaviour and understanding of the benefits for customers. For the flexible and fast implementation of customized, individualized, often cross-industry value propositions and the safeguarding of access to customers, it will be crucial in the future to act and help to shape the relevant business ecosystems (group of actors that need to interact in order to realize a value proposition or to have access to customers). The article describes the basic procedure for identifying and selecting relevant business ecosystems and their strategic and operational integration into a company.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to review and critique the existing literature on entrepreneurial teams (ET) by taking a multi-disciplinary viewpoint and provide a future research agenda based on the identified themes and trends.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review (SLR) was undertaken using “business source complete”. Further scrutiny and application of exclusion criteria led to a final sample consisting of 139 papers from 27 different journals belonging to not just entrepreneurship and strategic management but also other disciplines like OB, finance, sociology, psychology, etc. Using qualitative thematic analysis, the authors identified 11 major themes.FindingsThe paper reviews both the eleven themes and the linkages between the themes. Thereby identifying areas that have been understudied and those that have received comparatively more attention. The review revealed that the research stream possesses certain conceptual and methodological concerns apart from its cross-sectional and primarily bivariate nature. Five such main concerns have been identified and discussed in detail. Other elements of the resulting research agenda include calls for more clinical process-oriented research, further attention to context, shifting the level of analysis, and a need to integrate across disciplines.Originality/valueThis paper incorporates a broad insight of ET across academic disciplines to show how future contributions could benefit by incorporating research from other fields. In doing so, provides a starting point for more nuanced discussions around the interrelationships between the different conversations that are taking place in the ET literature.

Smart mobility is a central issue in the recent discourse about urban development policy towards smart cities. The design of innovative and sustainable mobility infrastructures as well as public policies require cooperation and innovations between various stakeholders—businesses as well as policy makers—of the business ecosystems that emerge around smart city initiatives. This poses a challenge for deploying instruments and approaches for the proactive management of such business ecosystems. In this article, we report on findings from a smart city initiative we have used as a case study to inform the development, implementation, and prototypical deployment of a visual analytic system (VAS). As results of our design science research we present an agile framework to collaboratively collect, aggregate and map data about the ecosystem. The VAS and the agile framework are intended to inform and stimulate knowledge flows between ecosystem stakeholders in order to reflect on viable business and policy strategies. Agile processes and roles to collaboratively manage and adapt business ecosystem models and visualizations are defined. We further introduce basic categories for identifying, assessing and selecting Internet data sources that provide the data for ecosystem models and we detail the ecosystem data and view models developed in our case study. Our model represents a first explication of categories for visualizing business ecosystem models in a smart city mobility context.
