In 2017, the Beats Per Minute (BPM) electronic music festival was banned from Playa del Carmen following a horrific shooting that left five dead and fifteen injured. The city’s response was to crack down on electronic music, arguing the scene posed a unique danger to the safety of the city and that electronic music was not part of Playa’s cultural identity. Those in the scene argued something else was underway, suggesting that the scene was being pushed out of the city to make room for higher end, luxury tourism development. The ousting of electronic music from the city raised important questions about the city’s cultural identity and the direction of tourism development the city would take. This essay takes a critical look at these events, tracing the way Playa’s particular electronic music scene grew to global notoriety as both a cause and consequence of the Maya Riviera’s impressive tourism expansion over the last two decades and how those in the scene believed themselves to be an essential part of the city’s heritage. The city government’s decision to oust BPM reveals how struggles over cultural heritage are at the very heart of how urban space is organized in tourism zones. Using the concept of “contestation”, this ethnographic account demonstrates how disputes over heritage and culture frame important questions of neoliberal, political-economy and can lead to counterintuitive outcomes.

Based on research in the old Recife Quarter in the city of Recife, capital of Pernambuco state, Brazil, this study examines processes of gentrification in areas of heritage value. The article focuses on the way in which these urban policies have transformed cultural heritage into a commodity, and urban space into social relationships mediated by consumerism. I argue that heritage sites that undergo processes of gentrification create strong spatial segregation and generate an appropriation of space by the excluded population that takes the form of counter-uses, undermining the uses imagined by urban and heritage policy makers.

This paper discusses the concept of “roughness” as the driving principle in the analysis of the rela‑ tionship between tourism development and built cultural heritage. It’s a theoretical reflection of an exploratory and descriptive nature that aims at synthesizing existing knowledge while providing new interpretative and analytical guidelines. Working from previous studies it was possible to identify the dialectics of the relationship between cultural heritage and tourism development with perspectives centering on two classification catego‑ ries, their intrinsic value and their market value. The study presents a re‑think of the concepts of roughness and heritage used in urban planning aimed at re‑interpreting urban space for tourism, re‑appraising their possible application to heritage sites in the city. The results may open up new perspectives for urban planning and roughness and balance out the advantages and disadvantages of re‑working the city space for tourism.

In February of 2016, Electric Forest — a four-day electronic music festival from June 23-26 in Rothbury, Michigan —announced a women’s only program called Her Forest. The initiative’s aim was to facilitate feelings of “connection, inspiration, and comfort” (Weiner, 2016) amongst the festival’s female guests. This MRP draws from past research on influence and postfeminism to consider how the Electric Forest brand, as well as its online followers, constructed and discussed Her Forest via Facebook and Instagram. A directed qualitative analysis was applied to 21 of Electric Forest’s Facebook and Instagram posts and 110 associated user comments. The analysis emphasized the powerful impact that social media applications have on the way in which corporate messages are expressed, received, reshaped, supported, and challenged.

The purpose of the research is to present guidelines and recommendations that can contribute to the post-war recovery of urban cultural heritage by a proposed methodology, based on other experiences in the reconstruction and preservation field of historical areas after wars, with the possibility of applying them, as an attempt to regain the features of the old part of the city. We also suggest those suggestions and guidance on three different levels. These guidelines are applicable at three levels: the historic core of the city, neighbourhood level, and individual quarters level. Each level had a specific theme for reconstruction planning that can maintain the city’s particular character during the current circumstances. Many cities have been heavily damaged as a result of the armed conflict in Syria, destroying most of the city’s neighbourhoods, including the historic district. Hence, we present a study of the consequences of this destruction on the historic fabric of the city, and search for the best solutions to give it the needed protection. Finally, the results and recommendations of this research will lead to developing answers to deal with historic centres and historic buildings that have been damaged by the armed conflict and were neglected before the war. The goal of this research is to identify fundamental principles that can lead to a successful reconstruction process while also preserving the city’s cultural identity.

The city of Gabes has been considered an important crossroads and a center of an old commercial activity for caravans and nomads since antiquity. This is in fact because it is famous for its unique coastal Mediterranean oasis. Coastal oases are essentially sources of great biological diversity and particular natural habitations, which altogether make an essential component of the cultural identity of the region. This key element of cultural heritage is unfortunately facing a lot of challenges which threaten its existence. The present study tries to understand the context of the evolution of the oasis dwelling and the traditional urban landscapes of the city of Gabes. It seeks to identify the typology of this traditional dwelling and characterize its main components. It also assesses its current state and the profound changes it is experiencing in an atmosphere of negligence from the side of state which has avoided adopting the principles of urgent intervention to promote, enhance it and preserve this dwelling against the undesirable effects of modernization.

Tourists are very inclined to the old town centers, which generally have many attractions of this type, and usually they are located in the immediate vicinity. Baščaršija is also an example of the old city area, which earlier was intended for commercial purposes only. Nowadays Baščaršija represents the most attractive part of the City of Sarajevo and its cultural features are a real attraction for many tourists. This paper focuses on the evaluation of the cultural - historical heritage within Baščaršija applying the method of tourist valorization of cultural resources by Hilary du Cross. Returning to some results, here we will analyze the itineraries of a group of musicians who are members of the circuit, focusing on their trajectories, the journeys they make in the urban space and the logics that organize their gait. We hypothesize that it’s the trajectories of the actors that modulate the paths they make, as well as those spatial paths that have a performative character about their biographies. The methodological strategy will be qualitative, using various data production tools, where the shadow (Jirón, 2012) stands out as a technique.Likewise, this article also provides a reflection on methodological tools to study artistic practices in the city and their reciprocity: the way the city conditions practices, the ways in which these practices produce city. Keywords: Circuit.
