The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of a 10 week shoulder home based exercise program (SHEP) on shoulder pain (SP) and range of motion (ROM) in a group of elite wheelchair basketball (WB) players. A convenience sample of elite WB players (n = 36, 15 males and 21 females), mean age of 26 years (SD 7.6, range 15–45)) were assigned to either an exercise or a control group, according to the use of the wheelchair during daily activities. The shoulder pain index for wheelchair basketball players (SPI-WB), functional tests and ROM were measured at baseline and after a 10 week intervention. In the analysis of the SPI-WB scores, for the exercise and control groups separately, there were no significant reductions of SPI-WB scores after intervention. Related to the analysis between groups after 10 weeks of intervention, there were no significant differences in changes between the exercise and control groups (Z = 0.840, p > 0.05, r = 0.743). In this regard, there was a significant change after the intervention for shoulder extension ROM (Z = 2.81, p ≤ 0.05, r = 0.249). Shoulder Pain did not increase along the 10 weeks of the SHEP development in WB players who reported SP before the intervention program. However, in those players who started the intervention without SP, as no increase in SP was observed and players were free of injury. An exercise program could be a tool to maintain shoulder health and prevent injuries in elite WB players.

The aim of the study was to assess the structure and content validity of a home-based exercise program, as an instrument to prevent of shoulder pain (SP) in wheelchair basketball players. The proposed program was designed considering previous studies but to be applied in this specific population and; it was composed by exercises based on active mobility (4 exercises), strengthening (5 exercises) and stretching (5 exercises) of the shoulder joint. An ad hoc questionnaire was administered to a convenience sample of 9 experts (1 rehabilitation physician,1 sport physician, 4 physiotherapists and 3 coaches) that fulfilled the defined inclusion criteria. The results showed that experts considered the shoulder home-based exercise program (SHEP) as adequate tool for SP prevention in WB; however, some experts suggested some changes to improve it. According to the qualitative analysis performed, findings revealed two main underlying factors such as “design” (content and structure) and “application” that could influence in the adequate use of the home-based exercise program. This study provided evidence that the presentedhome-based exercise program is a validate tool and could be a powerful tool to prevent shoulder pain in WB player’s population.

Background: Fatigue is one of the foremost common complications faced the hemodialysis elderly patients. Fatigue not only impact the daily lives and activities of patients but it conjointly influences their quality of life, which can afterwards result in magnified depression, tiny social interactions and increase dependency on others.Aim: Determine the effect of exercise program on fatigue and depression among geriatric patients undergoing hemodialysis.Design: Randomized controlled trial (pretest post-test) design was used.Setting: The study was carried out in the dialysis units of Mansoura University Hospital and New Mansoura General Hospital.Subjects: A purposive sample of 62 geriatric patients undergoing hemodialysis was selected and randomly allocated into two equal groups, study group (n = 31) and control group (n =31).Tools: Three tools were used; Structured interview questionnaire sheet, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form.Results: The mean age of the study and control groups was 63.45±4.49 and 64.7±5.25 respectively. A high statistically significant change in fatigue and depression score (pre and post 2 months) between the study and the control groups was observed (P=0.000). Moreover, a statistically significant relation was observed between fatigue and age of the hemodialysis geriatric patients after implementation of the exercise program (P= 0.002).Conclusion: Implementation of the exercise program proved to be effective in improving the level of fatigue and depression among geriatric patients undergoing hemodialysis in the study group.Recommendation: Encourage geriatric patients undergoing hemodialysis to perform regularly range of motion and relaxation exercises in order to alleviate fatigue and overcome depression.

Four hundred sixty-seven high school athletes were screened in apreparticipation athletic physical. Forty-six (9.8%) of these athletes presented with asymptomatic, nontraumatic unilateral hyperextension. Twenty-three athletes were reexamined and compared to a normal control group. A 2.5-cm, statistically significant heel-to-heel difference was recorded in the hyperextension group. Between the involved hyperextended and uninvolved legs, there were differences in average range of motion (132.04° vs. 130.74°, respectively), average manual anterior translation by KT-1000 (5.39 mm vs. 5.15 mm, respectively), average posterior translation (2.07 mm vs. 2.00 mm, respectively), average peak quadriceps torque (86.25 ft-lb vs. 84.06 ft-lb, respectively), and hamstring average peak torque (53.89 ft-lb vs. 52.93 ft-lb, respectively), though these differences were not statistically significant. In the control group, there was no heel-to-heel difference in the right versus the left knee. Heel-to-heel difference between the experimental and control groups was statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference between range of motion, anterior translation, or posterior translation between the experimental and control groups.

The effect of range motion (ROM) ankle exercise on prevention of neuropathy and angiopathy in patient with diabetes mellitusBackground: Based on data from Basic Health Research (2013) conducted by the Indonesian Ministry of Health in a way to obtain the proportion of DM at the age of 15 years and over, confirmed / checked whether or not they suffer from DM or not.It was found that Lampung Province was ranked as the 8th largest DM person from 33 provinces throughout Indonesia, with DM patients with 38,923 lives and 5,560 people. One complication that needs attention is diabetes foot injury and it can cause amputation. The most common cause of diabetes foot injury is peripheral neuropathy which includes damage to sensory, autonomic and motor nerves.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Range of Motion (ROM) ankle exercise on prevention of neuropathy and angiopathy on diabetes patients.Methods: A quasi experimental pre and post- test with control group study design was employed. The purposive sampling with 26 participants (13 respondents intervention group and 13 respondents control group) were recruited. The interventions groups performed ROM ankle exercise in their own respective training programs for 4 weeks, whereas no training was done in the control group. Both groups intervention and control, before and after the exercise program were measured with monofilament test for neuropathy and Venous Doppler for angiopathy. The data analysis was using t-test.Results: In the intervention group there were a significant improvements after ROM ankle exercise on prevention of neuropathy with p Value 0.000 and for angiopathy with p Value 0.000. Provinsi Lampung menduduki peringkat ke – 8 penyandang DM terbesar dari 33 Provinsi diseluruh Indonesia, 38.923 jiwa dan 5.560 jiwa . Salah satu komplikasi yang harus mendapat perhatian yaitu luka kaki diabetes karena dapat mengakibarkan amputasi. Penyebab terbanyak dari luka kaki diabetes yaitu neuropati perifer yang meliputi kerusakan syaraf sensorik, otonom dan motorik.Tujuan: Diketahui pengaruh Range Of Motion (ROM) Ankle terhadap pencegahan terjadinya Neuropati dan Angiopati pada pasien Diabetes Melitus.Metode: Penelitian ini mengunakan desain quasi eksperimen pre post test dengan kelompok control dan intervensi..Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan tehnik Purposive Sampling dengan jumlah sampel yaitu 26 responden. Instrument penelitian ini  menggunakan 10 gr semmens weinstein monofilament untuk  mendeteksi  Neuropati dan  Venous Doppler  Ultrasound untuk  mendeteksi angiopati. Hasil: Menunjukkan adanya pengaruh latihan Range of Motion (ROM) Ankle terhadap pencegahan neuropati dengan p Value 0.000 dan angiopati dengan p Value 0.000. SummaryThe aim of the study was to determine the effect of regular participation in home-based exercise programme on cognitive functioning changes in institutionalised older adults. Two groups of participants were recruited for the study: experimental (n = 17) in mean age 76 ± 5.6 years, who participated in home-based exercise program and control (n = 14) in mean age 80 ± 4.2 years. The standardised Stroop Color-Word Test-Victoria version (VST) was used to measure the level of cognitive functions. Group differences were analyzed with Mann-Whitney U-test for independent samples and for differences between pre-measurements and post-measurements on experimental and control group we used non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed - Rank Test. The level of significance was α < 0.05. Application of 3-months home-based exercise program significantly improved the cognitive functions only in one (Word condition; p<0.01) from three VST conditions in institutionalised older adults. That’s why we recommend longer participation in home-based exercise program, at least 6- months, with combination of various types of cognitive interventions, like concepts of cognitive training, cognitive rehabilitation, and cognitive stimulation to improve cognitive functioning in older adults living in old peoples’ homes.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate shoulder pain in a sample of elite wheelchair basketball players during their preparation for a major competition. Method: Seventeen male wheelchair basketball players, between 16 and 43 years of age, were studied during their athletic preparation for a wheelchair basketball championship. The shoulder pain questionnaire, impingement tests and shoulder range of motion were evaluated during a training camp. Spearman´s rank correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relationship between shoulder pain and range of motion indicating the value of the effect size. Results: Shoulder pain was evident in 52.9% of the sample and was significant and negatively correlated with range of motion, while 35.3% related to impingement tests player’s reported pain. The correlation was moderate to high. Conclusions: In conclusion, the use of shoulder pain questionnaire, goniometric measurements and clinical test could be a useful approach for monitoring the shoulder injuries of wheelchair basketball players to explore the possible consequences of performing repetitive movements. Resumen Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el dolor de hombro en jugadores de baloncesto en silla de ruedas de élite durante su preparación para una competencia de alto nivel. Método: Diecisiete jugadores masculinos de baloncesto en silla de ruedas, entre 16 y 43 años, fueron evaluados con el cuestionario para el dolor de hombro en jugadores de baloncesto en silla de ruedas, las pruebas clínicas y el rango de movimiento del hombro durante la preparación para un campeonato. El coeficiente de correlación de Spearman se utilizó para analizar la correlación entre el dolor de hombro y el rango de movimiento, indicando el valor del tamaño del efecto. Resultados: El dolor de hombro fue evidente en el 52.9% de la muestra, siendo significativo. En tanto que, hubo una correlación negativa entre el dolor de hombro y el rango de movimiento, mientras que el 35.3% reportó dolor de acuerdo con las pruebas clínicas. La correlación fue de moderada a alta. Conclusiones: La utilización del cuestionario, las mediciones goniométricas y las pruebas clínicas podrían ser herramientas adecuadas para monitorear la condición del hombro en los jugadores de baloncesto en silla de ruedas, y así explorar las posibles consecuencias de los movimientos repetitivos. Resumo Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a dor no ombro em uma amostra de jogadores de elite de basquete em cadeira de rodas durante sua preparação para uma competição de alto nível. Método: Dezessete jogadores de basquete em cadeira de rodas do sexo masculino, entre 16 e 43 anos de idade, foram avaliados com o questionário de dor no ombro, testes clínicos de impacto e amplitude articular durante o treinamento para um campeonato. O coeficiente de correlação de Spearman foi utilizado para analisar a relação entre dor no ombro e amplitude de movimento que indica o valor do tamanho do efeito. Resultados: A dor no ombro foi evidente em 52,9% da amostra e foi significativa e negativamente correlacionada com a amplitude de movimento, enquanto 35,3% teve uma correlação de moderada a alta em relação à dor durante os testes de impacto. Conclusões: Em conclusão, o uso de questionário de dor no ombro, medições goniométricas e teste clínico poderia ser uma abordagem útil para monitorar as lesões no ombro de jogadores de basquete em cadeira de rodas para explorar as possíveis consequências da realização de movimentos repetitivos.

Objective: To compare the effects of a 12-month home-based exercise program to usual care in patients after arthroscopic capsulolabral repair of the shoulder. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting: Outpatient physical and rehabilitation medicine clinic. Subjects: Forty-five patients (mean age: 35 years; standard deviation (SD): 10 years) who underwent arthroscopic capsulolabral repair due to labral lesion were randomized into an exercise group (EG) or a control group (CG). Intervention: The EG received a 12-month home-based additional exercise program with four physiotherapy follow-up visits, while the CG received standard postoperative exercise instructions. Main measures: Self-reported shoulder disability was assessed with the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form (ASES) and quality of life with the Short-Form (SF)-36 Health Survey. The function of the operated shoulder was evaluated with strength and range of motion measurements. Results: No between-group differences were observed in any of the outcomes at the follow-up. Mean ASES score improved by 16 (95% confidence interval (CI): 10–23) points from the baseline 78 (SD: 17) in the EG and 13 (95% CI: 7–19) points from the baseline 79 (SD: 17) in the CG. Both groups achieved a significant improvement in the dimensions of Physical Functioning, Role-Physical, and Bodily Pain of the SF-36 and in every aspect of strength and range of motion measures. In EG, exercise adherence was moderate (52%) during the first six months and poor (22%) during the last six months. Conclusion: Home-based additional exercises with four outpatient follow-up visits did not improve outcome after arthroscopic capsular repair of the shoulder.

An effective and safe remedy for shoulder pain is needed as shoulder pain is a common complication of stroke and restricts recovery of patients. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of Ouhyul herbal acupuncture point injection (O-API) on shoulder pain in patients with stroke. Twenty-four participants with shoulder pain after stroke were recruited and randomized to the O-API and control groups. Treatment was conducted for 2 weeks three times per week. We evaluated the effects of treatment with a numerical rating scale (NRS), painless passive range of motion (PROM) of external shoulder rotation, and the Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment (FMMA) at baseline, each week, and 1 week after the final treatment. All measures were similar between the O-API and control groups at baseline. The O-API group showed significant improvement on the NRS compared with that in the control group after 2 weeks of treatment, and the treatment effect was maintained until the follow-up period. PROM decreased significantly in both groups, but the reduction was maintained only in the O-API group. No significant difference was observed on the FMMA between the two groups. O-API resulted in significant improvement in shoulder pain after stroke, and its effect was maintained after termination of treatment without any severe side effects.

The purpose of this research was to examine the effectiveness of family activities which are improved for the families. In this research, content improved family involvement activities were applied to the families whose children continue their pre-school mothers’ and fathers’ family involvement were compared. Research’s experiment group includes the parents of 16 students who continue their pre-school education. Control group includes the parents of 10 students. Family Involvement Questionnaire (FIQ) has been used to test the effectiveness of family involvement activities. This FIQ measures the family involvement as school-based involvement, home–school conferencing and home-based involvement. In data analyses, the Mann–Whitney U test has been used. FIQ has been answered by all the parents from experiment group and 10 mothers and 6 fathers from the control group. The result of analyses has shown that there is no difference between experiment and control groups’ family involvements. In the experiment group, mothers’ home–school conferencing permanent involvement scores are higher than the fathers’ home–school conferencing involvement scores. The results of the research have been argued, and the suggestions were given to pre-school teachers and related research workers. Background. This study aims to analyze the effect of exercise and learning therapy on the cognitive functions and daily physical activities of older people with dementia in Indonesia. Methods. This was an experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and a control group. Samples were selected using nonrandom sampling methods and were then randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The study population was older people with mild-to-moderate dementia, and the sample number was 90 people. The intervention group received an Indonesian physical exercise program for older people and reading therapy through 12 sessions over four weeks. The intervention was led by a community health volunteer who has been trained and certified. Results. The mean score for cognitive function in the intervention group showed significant increase between pre- and postintervention, with p  value < 0. 001 , and there was no significant difference in the control group before and after intervention, with a p  value of 0. 198 . Further, the Mann–Whitney test showed that there were significant differences in the mean scores for cognitive function between the intervention and control groups with p  value < 0. 001 and a 95% confidence level. Conclusion. Based on the results, the Indonesian older people exercise program and reading aloud activity had a positive effect on the cognitive function of older people with dementia.
