Beer is a widely produced, consumed, and traded alcoholic drink all around the world. This paper investigates the factors influencing competitiveness in the global beer trade on the macroeconomic level. To reach this aim, descriptive analysis and panel regression together with stability tests were used on the global beer market from 1998 to 2017. Results showed high concentration both in global production and trade, while except for the most competitive beer-exporting countries, the level of comparative advantages has significantly changed in these three decades. Based on the panel regression models, total beer production and per capita consumption, EU membership, and the number of beers with geographical indications have a positive impact on comparative advantages. In contrast, barley production, level of foreign direct investments, size of the population, GDP/capita, and high quality level of the beer export have a negative effect.

The objective of the study: The main objective of this study is to determine the factors that influence manufacturing small, medium and micro-sized enterprises’ (SMMEs) borrowing from banks.Problem statement: This article examines factors that affect SMMEs’ ability to borrow money from commercial banks. Empirical evidence was collected from manufacturing SMMEs.Motivation for the study: There is a scarcity of studies on factors influencing borrowing among Botswana manufacturing SMMEs.Methodology: The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research designs. The random stratified sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 100 manufacturing SMMEs from a population of 329 registered manufacturing SMMEs in Botswana. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression estimation was used to obtain the main objective.Main findings: The empirical results showed that longevity in position and annual turnover have positive impact on getting access to bank loans, while marital status has a negative effect on access to bank loans.Practical implications: An understanding of factors influencing borrowing can increase chances of an SMME gaining financing from commercial banks, thus solving the challenge of access to finance.Contributions: The results are significant to SMMEs, policymakers, the banking sector and other researchers. Furthermore, this study increases literature on SMME challenges and financing logistics.

AbstractThis study aims to investigate the effectiveness of macroprudential policies in mitigating the systemic risk in Indonesia. The study uses quantitative descriptive analysis with the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and emphasizes on the impact of two macroprudential instruments applied in Indonesia; Macroprudential Liquidity Buffer (MLB) and Countercyclical Capital Buffer (CCyB) to credit growth for conventional and financing growth for Sharia bank. This study employes monthly data over the periods M12010-M102019 that obtained from Bank Indonesia’s (BI) website (www.bi.go.di) and the data published monthly by Financial Service Authority (OJK); Indonesia Bank Statistic and Sharia Bank Statistic. The result indicates that MLB has a positive impact on credit growth and negative effect financing for Sharia Bank. Otherwise, CCyB shows the opposite results, where it has a negative effect on credit growth, while in the Sharia bank, CCyB has a positive effect. Therefore, it is sufficient to conclude that MLB has a capability to curb the systemic risk for Sharia bank, whereas CCyB is effective for conventional bank.

The paper’s objective is to investigate the impact of value proposition co-creation on international customer satisfaction in the airsoft industry. This empirical paper aims at answering a question “Which factors influence satisfaction of the international customers involved in the process of value co-creation in the airsoft industry” and sets a hypothesis that value co-creators’ country of origin has a positive impact on customers’ satisfaction. A case study approach of an entrepreneurial company (GATE) was supplemented with data collected via a survey (n = 176), where consumers’ perception of the firm’s value proposition and its influence on their satisfaction were investigated. The study contributes to the value creation theory by identifying the main factors influencing customer satisfaction in the airsoft industry and verifying whether the co-creators’ origin affects the factors’ ratings. The results indicate that the most crucial factors influencing international customer satisfaction in this industry are quality level and product functionality and that the country of origin of customers has no significant impact on international customer satisfaction.

Dividend policy is one of the most important activities which investors will wait and interpret the action as a positive signal because it indicates the firm performance (a firm which distributes dividend considered has better performance). Dividend policy is a strategical decision since it will impact firm credibility and firm value. This study aims to analyze the effect of profitability, growth opportunities, leverage, and size on dividend policy in the automotive industry which listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2009 to 2016. The automotive industry is one of Indonesian middle-class standard measurement and it will be the biggest automotive ASEAN market in 2019. We use secondary data and use pooling regression (panel regression) to analyze the result of the study. The result shows that profit margin, return on asset, and size has positive and statistically significant on dividend policy, growth opportunities has the negative effect and statistically significant on dividend policy, while return on equity and leverage do not affect the dividend policy. Keywords: Profitability, growth opportunities, leverage, firm size, dividend policy

Conceptual and applied studies assessing the linkage between economic freedom and corruption expect that economic freedom boosts economic growth, improves income, and reduces levels of corruption. However, most of them have concentrated on developed and developing groups, while Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries have drawn much less attention. Empirical findings are most often conflicting. Moreover, previous studies performed rather simple frequentist techniques regressing one or some freedom indices on corruption that do not allow for grasping all the aspects of economic freedom as well as capturing variations across countries. The study aims to investigate the effects of ten components of economic freedom index on the level of corruption in ten ASEAN countries from 1999 to 2018. By applying a Bayesian hierarchical mixed-effects regression via a Monte Carlo technique combined with the Gibbs sampler, the obtained results suggest several findings as follows: (i) In view of probability, the predictors property rights, government integrity, tax burden, business freedom, labor freedom, and investment freedom have a strongly positive impact on the response perceived corruption index; (ii) Government spending, trade freedom, and financial freedom exert a strongly negative effect, while the influence of monetary freedom is ambiguous; (iii) There is an existence of not only random intercepts but also random coefficients at the country level impacting the model outcome. The empirical outcome could be of major importance for more efficient corruption controlling in emerging countries, including ASEAN nations.

We empirically determine the role of different forms of infrastructure on a country’s trade. We use an augmented gravity model that incorporates infrastructure in the estimation of merchandise trade flows. We take panel data, including China and 21 selected Asian economies, from 1999 to 2018. We find that the panel ordinary least squares (OLS) and poisson pseudo maximum likelihood (PPML) model estimations prove to be significant. Proxies for Transport Infrastructure including roads, railways, and sea transport, and Proxies for information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure consisting of mobile, electricity, and internet connections show a strong and positive impact on trade while air transport and landline phone connection have an unexpected negative effect on trade. The positive estimates for quality of infrastructure signify that high standards of Transport and ICT infrastructures lead to increased trade flows of the exporting and importing countries. Results also show that cultural similarity leads to increased trade flows between China and its trading partners in Asia.

This study investigates the effect of linguistic realizations of employee empathy (LREE) on brand trust in email responses to customer complaints. We explore possible mediating effects of perceived empathy and perceived complaint handling quality and we look into moderation effects of compensation (Study 1) or customer’s acceptance of blame (Study 2). Our aim is to find out if LREE have a negative or positive impact on the customer in cases of partial refunds, either because LREE are being perceived as insincere or as genuine expressions of concern. The results of two experiments show that LREE positively influence brand trust through higher perceived empathy and perceived complaint handling quality. However, the expected negative effect is not found, as LREE are more effective in a low versus high compensation condition. The effectiveness itself is not influenced by the acceptance of blame when a partial refund is offered.
