Scientometric studies have become very important within the scientific environment in general, and in the family firm area in particular. This study aims at conducting a bibliometric analysis of socioemotional wealth within family firms. To this end, a background search of the terms family firm and socioemotional wealth has been carried out in the Web of Science, specifically in specialized journals published between 1975 and 2019 in the Science Citation Index. The resulting scientometric analyses are of the number of papers and citations, the main authors and journals, the WoS categories, the institutions, the countries and the word co-occurrence. One of the main conclusions of this paper is the abundance of studies that have been conducted on socioemotional wealth in family firms, which is reflected in the number of publications (501) and of citations of these studies (12,090). Another significant revelation is the copious number of authors, with Gómez-Mejía being the most relevant one and De Massis the one with the highest number of publications. Also noteworthy are the many USA-based institutions, with the Mississippi State University and the University of North Carolina being the two most prominent. In addition, studies have been carried out about family firms’ focus, mainly, on performance and ownership.

The article presents the concept of reconstruction of the Fertiki unit of the biogeoecological station of the Udmurt State University (hereinafter – the Fertiki campus), formed in the process of joint work of geographers and designers. The presence of a field campus is a necessary condition for the professional skills and abilities formation of students in a number of training areas in a classical university. However, the requirements for the campuses internal space formation are changing. If one and a half to two decades ago it was enough to have a minimally equipped site on the territory that meets the basic needs in terms of the field practices and scientific research content, now the need to expand the functionality and types of activities is becoming more and more obvious. At the same time, it is proposed to put natural, cultural and historical features of the area within which the campus is located as the basis for modern design solutions. In conditions of limited funding and a general unstable financial situation, there is a need for more efficient use of the property complex of the university, including field campuses. They should not only satisfy the needs of conducting educational practices and scientific research, but become complex out-of-town (field) divisions of universities aimed at various types of activities. The proposed concept provides the reconstruction of the biogeoecological station in the direction of forming a focus point of natural and cultural landscapes of a vast territory. On the one hand, the campus must organically fit into the surrounding space, and on the other hand, it must reflect its main natural, cultural and historical features in order to get rich content. Only complexity and polyfunctionality can be stimuli and conditions for its development.

The following paper, which was originally presented at the annual conference of the International Council on Education for Teaching in July 1994, focuses on the importance of the academic library in preparing future teachers. As noted in this article, librarians and libraries, although omitted from the original discussion in Nation at a Risk, received full attention in the publications that responded to this seminal work. Drawing on the many documents that followed publication of Nation at a Risk the authors highlight the value of strong library programs, specifically those that support Teacher Education Departments. In particular, the experience of future teachers attending California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and the University Library at CSULB are presented here.

Transgenerational control intention (TCI) is a pivotal characteristic of many family firms. Yet, it remains unclear whether TCI benefits family-firm performance by instilling a long-term view, or hurts performance by fueling harmful socioemotional wealth (SEW) goals. We posit that it depends who pursues it. When faced with TCI, family managers are known to suffer from cognitive biases that, we submit, do not similarly apply to nonfamily managers. Thus, only family managers harm performance when pursuing TCI. An empirical investigation of 107 private German family firms supports our theory; the effect of TCI on firm performance depends on who pursues it.

Modern conditions of service for graduates of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the territorial bodies of internal Affairs, among the many law enforcement requirements imposed on young professionals, additionally indicate that it is not necessary to form a sufficiently high level of professional legal mobility, the ability to easily start professional law enforcement activities in a different direction from the one in which his training was carried out at the university of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. In this article, in addition to studying the concept and content of professional mobility, the reasons for its insufficient level among graduates of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, proposals are formulated for its improvement, transformation from a semi-mythical category into the reality of the service of an employee of the territorial body of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

To promote both learning and horticulture, a 5 year pilot program was implemented with a collaborative effort between the Louisiana State University Horticulture Department and the University Laboratory School. The objective of this program was to develop a hands-on approach to learning which fostered self-discovery and a positive perception of horticulture. First graders were able to experiment in both the greenhouse and in the field with instruction in the classroom. Among the many concepts that the children were Introduced to, they benefitted most from being able to participate and observe the process from seeding to harvesting enabling them to work with the different types of seeds, media, and fertilizers. In the classroom, horticulture was Integrated in every subject of the first grade class. For example, the students learned math by measuring and counting the produce then making charts to report their findings. The result of the program was that the children did in fact obtain a positive perspective of horticulture while developing an awareness of the process of growth and development of horticultural crops. The first grade class received a national award for donating their produce to the local food bank in Baton Rouge.

The analysis of the results of a questionnaire survey of heads of institutes, departments and members of Academic board of the State University of Management on a set of issues related to goal-setting in teaching managerial personnel has been presented. It has been revealed, on the one hand, a variety of respondents ‘ points of view, on the other hand, the presence of a sufficiently high degree of unanimity in goal-setting and ways of exit of the University to the trajectory of effective development. It has been concluded, that it is necessary to take serious measures to improve the quality of higher education using, first of all, rich domestic experience and strategic guidelines in the socio-economic development of the country.

Recent progress in the literature shows that board efficacy might be signaled by lower firm performance variability in a firm’s income, since the board has a fiduciary duty to protect shareholder investments that may be affected when performance is variable. Our analysis is an attempt to contribute to this debate by extending it to include family firms. In particular, we detect appointments of directors to family firm boards within a sample of 483 observations (year/firm) regarding Italian publicly listed companies. Sampled family firms have one of the family members as CEO and/or chairman (in cases of non-CEO duality) of the firm’s board. The aim is to test predictions which suggest that the presence of independent (Agency Theory), on the one hand, and interlocking directors (Resource Dependence theory), on the other, have a significant impact on performance stability. Unlike agency theory, which affirms that independents are efficient, our findings suggest that the number of independents on the board of a family firm has no impact on performance stability. Instead, we find that interlocking directors can provide a significant contribution to the achieving of lower performance variability.

This study investigated the desegregation of Mississippi State University varsity football, focusing on newspaper coverage of the first Black players at the university, Robert Bell and Frank Dowsing. Two hundred and three articles about Bell and Dowsing from three newspapers (Starkville Daily News, Mississippi State Reflector, and Jackson Clarion-Ledger) were examined using a three-tiered qualitative analysis. Data analysis resulted in 426 frame instances and 686 theme instances, or a total of 1,112 codes. The resulting data were interpreted using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical lens to generate understanding of the desegregation of the football program. The CRT-guided interpretation challenges popular narratives about the amicable nature of desegregation at the university, indicating that the football team and the careers of Bell and Dowsing were covered in a way that promoted colorblindness and supported the Whitecentric interests of the university’s and community’s dominant power structure.

How does the socioemotional wealth (SEW) of a family firm affect its deal valuation in acquisition? Using a sample of 515 completed transactions of S&P 500 firms over the period 2003–2016, we examine a number of contexts and find that SEW creates differential valuations of targets by family firms vis-à-vis non-family firms. Particularly from an internationalization perspective, acquisitions may be an ideal option for family firms because foreign acquisitions may be loosely coupled from the core firm. Post-hoc analyses on the heterogeneity in family governance reveal that founder and descendant board chairs may have different perceptions of SEW.
