Traditional construction solutions face increasing competition from more ecological materials such as construction systems based on wood. Thanks to the numerous favourable properties of wood, wood construction enjoys great popularity and allows building economical and modern constructions that are durable and contribute to an ecological future. This study is motivated by the need for innovative solutions in construction and offers numerous findings based on examining actual constructions based on wood. By examining the interactions among selected factors of constructions and their users, the study reacts to the global challenges that call for increased efficiency and sustainability in construction. The examination of the interactions among the selected factors offers more extensive knowledge in the field of constructions based on wood and points towards possible innovative approaches for more sustainable housing and for a more efficient construction industry. The analyses showed that the key aspects that determine the sustainability of housing from the perspective of users are the standard of construction workmanship and construction time, which depend on the choice of construction system, cost-efficiency of use, and material composition and floor plan design. These aspects also interacted with other technical and design aspects, which also played an important role in the perception of housing sustainability.

Due to the great negative impact, the construction industry needs to undergo a paradigm shift from traditional construction to sustainable construction. To reach the goal of sustainable development, the construction industry needs to intensify its efforts to move to a knowledge intensive mode. Based on the analysis of e-Cognos and the concept of ontology, this paper proposes that e-Cognos ontology can be applied in the development of sustainable construction process ontology, which is a key part of knowledge management system (KMS). Following this, the application process of ontology-based KMS is analyzed using IDEF0 modeling method. Finally, this paper analyzes interorganizational collaboration model in sustainable project.

As the variety of materials utilized in construction industry has expanded, new techniques have been used in order to optimize the quality and efficiency of output. Therefore, recent innovations taking place in the construction industry led researchers to increase the mechanical efficiency of the output more than the cost effectiveness of it. However, especially professionals experiencing in the industry look into the cost effectiveness of the work. In other words, they also want researchers to justify the innovative techniques economically. The aim of this study is to provide a comparative analysis of the cost efficiency of polymer concrete used to manufacture durable and long-lasting reinforced concrete structures.

We discuss the suffix tree generalization to matrices in this chapter. We extend the suffix tree notion (described in Chapter 3) from text strings to text matrices whose entries are taken from an ordered alphabet with the aim of solving pattern-matching problems. This suffix tree generalization can be efficiently used to implement low-level routines for Computer Vision, Data Compression, Geographic Information Systems and Visual Databases. We examine the submatrices in the form of the text’s contiguous parts that still have a matrix shape. Representing these text submatrices as “suitably formatted” strings stored in a compacted trie is the rationale behind suffix trees for matrices. The choice of the format inevitably influences suffix tree construction time and space complexity. We first deal with square matrices and show that many suffix tree families can be defined for the same input matrix according to the matrix’s string representations. We can store each suffix tree in linear space and give an efficient construction algorithm whose input is both the matrix and the string representation chosen. We then treat rectangular matrices and define their corresponding suffix trees by means of some general rules which we list formally. We show that there is a super-linear lower bound to the space required (in contrast with the linear space required by suffix trees for square matrices). We give a simple example of one of these suffix trees. The last part of the chapter illustrates some technical results regarding suffix trees for square matrices: we show how to achieve an expected linear-time suffix tree construction for a constant-size alphabet under some mild probabilistic assumptions about the input distribution. We begin by defining a wide class of string representations for square matrices. We let Σ denote an ordered alphabet of characters and introduce another alphabet of five special characters, called shapes. A shape is one of the special characters taken from set {IN,SW,NW,SE,NE}. Shape IN encodes the 1x1 matrix generated from the empty matrix by creating a square.

Purpose Starting from the challenges and implications of doing organizational ethnography within the organization which the researcher is also employed by, the purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the idea of “passing the test” in relation to such ethnographic endeavor. The paper discusses how “collaboration” on projects and in product development processes with colleagues/informants is a precondition for passing “tests,” which unfolded as subtle, verbalized demands made by colleagues/informants during fieldwork. Design/methodology/approach Longitudinal anthropological fieldwork was carried out as part of an industrial PhD project, which investigates digitization as organizational, professional and social practices in the Danish construction industry. The fieldwork lasted on/off from April 2017 to December 2018. Various forms of participant observation and collaborative ethnographic methods were used during fieldwork. Findings The paper investigates how these “tests” focused on two key aspects: the relevance of anthropology in a profit-oriented, technical corporate organization; and the application of anthropological theories and ethnographic methodologies for the benefit of product development, usability studies and organizational change. It is argued that the tests were passed through collaborative engagements, where the author oscillated between positions as collegial insider and outside researcher for the dual benefit of both commercial interests and research interests. Originality/value The paper suggests that daring to collaborate and co-create products (as something different than texts) during organizational fieldwork for the benefit of both corporate and ethnographic interests offers strong possibilities for keeping ethnography relevant and applicable, passing tests in organizational settings and advancing ethnography’s impact in the world.

The growing context of globalization permanently increases pressure on the construction companies to improve their performances in order to resist to the constraints of competitiveness in the international market. It has become ineluctable to look for introducing a new alternative capable of bringing creative improvement to the traditional production system. This paper will relate mainly to the most relevant management techniques in the construction industry, and more specifically, the lean construction concept. Initially, we will determine the main characteristics of the construction industry compared to the manufacturing industry according to three levels: on-site production, one of a kind projects, and complexity. Subsequently, we will focus our attention on the main sources of waste in the construction industry. Finally, a rigorous comparative study will be carried out to show the contribution of the lean construction tools in the promotion of traditional construction especially at the level of the following factors: Creating value and eliminating waste; Planning and mutual coordination; Site organization. Lean construction as Last Planner System (LPS), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Just-in-Time philosophy, Visual management (VM) and 5S have shown a great ability to improve the traditional production system through waste reduction, encouraging people involvement, ensuring a pull flow production, and promotion of a continuous improvement philosophy.

Variation order refers to any changes from the scope, plan, specification or contract document in the construction project. This changes of work is a common problem in construction projects in Malaysia. It is inevitable in any construction project and this problem can become more serious when variation order causes work progress to be impaired as a results it increased the construction time and cost that affects the construction industry in Malaysia. This paper critically review the causes of variation order in the construction industry on the double-storey terrace housing project in Malaysia. The discussions began with the construction industry in Malaysia and then related parties involved in the construction industry. The extensive local and abroad literature review on the definitions of variation order and analysis of past studies conducted on variation order and the previous study of the prediction model of variation. The extensive literature on variation order in the construction of building project may help to improve the performance in term of time, cost and quality of the construction of building projects in Malaysia.

In modern times, information technology developes very quickly. Architecture engineering construction industry has gradually been revolutionized from traditional ways to technology-based methods. As the engineering construction project is very complex ,advanced tools are required to assist finishing a project. Building information modeling is disseminated to construction industry ,as an instrument to help collaboration and co-working. The practical effectiveness of BIM is mainly in architecture design, while BIM can be used as a tool in other parts of construction industry such as virtual construction ,time-dependent control and maintainance management and even the lifecycle management.This paper mainly presents five main parts and functions designed of information system based on BIM, and analyses the strengths of the system .It aims to demonstrate how engineering project overcome traditional barriers and physical distribution with the development of information technology across the whole construction lifecycle.

There is increasing pressure in the UK construction industry for new construction innovations, technology and processes with ability to lever a significant impact relative to disrupting the existing status quo; creating solutions that promote construction efficiencies deploying means to exploiting offsite construction approaches. The increased concern and challenge globally is that as knowledge and experience grows, the offsite manufacturers and suppliers are expected to demonstrate absolute innovative solutions that will heighten the proportion of project value being delivered through the use of offsite solutions on the bases that it makes sound project and business sense. Unparalleled huge cost saving benefits to clients and end users which is more than just creating a model is yet to be realized.

Green building is the inevitable trend of the development of the construction industry. One of the key links to realize green building is green construction management. The poor economy of traditional construction hinders the smooth promotion of green construction in the construction industry. This paper mainly from the green building and green construction two concepts of related content research. Through the analysis and discussion of the main principles of project cost management in green construction, this paper briefly expounds some implementation measures of project cost management in green construction. This paper deeply discusses the current situation of green construction project cost management, and puts forward relevant improvement countermeasures. The experimental results show that: construction enterprises should make innovative thinking on construction management and bring green construction into project management. This can provide impetus for the sustainable development of the construction industry.

Abstract Design of new modern systems for low energy efficient construction in a passive, zero standard or energy-autonomous buildings, as well as the increased popularity of solid wood construction means intervention into the very structure of its statics, building physics, but also fire properties. Some prototype design solutions are not verified whether the tests, by good computational analysis or verification of long-term use of the building. In the context of changing standards in building design, new approaches are needed. If in wooden buildings the potential risk of fire is higher than other buildings, we need special methods, materials and practical skills.
