Despite the increasing realization of the significance of work ethics and moral awareness (MA) in businesses after mega scandals, such as those of Enron and Tyco, few studies have investigated the relationship between MA and employees’ performance and the intermediate mechanisms that explain this relationship. This study proposes that as employees’ work ethics are calibrated through ethical training, their MA increases, in turn affecting employees’ job performance. This experimental study is aimed at investigating the impact of MA, increased through ethical training, on employees’ job performance. Based on institutional theory, the multidimensional work ethic profile (MWEP) and strategic human resource management literature, it is hypothesized that MA of employees’ is positively correlated with employees’ performance and that this relationship is moderated by the age, gender and education level of the employees. In particular, the moral awareness component of ethical decision-making (EDM) models is considered as coextensive with work ethics in experimental design, and work ethics is depicted by a multidimensional work ethic profile (MWEP). The study used a sample of 100 employees of a golf club, divided into an experiment group and a control group with 50 employees each. The experiment group was subjected to an ethical training program focused on increasing MA. Employees’ performance for both groups was evaluated based on eight sub-variables. The study concluded that increasing MA increases employees’ performance, with no significant moderation effect of age, gender and education level on this relationship. The results of this study will go a long way in helping managers to increase the productivity of their employees through increased MA.

The objective of this study is to examine the impact of work ethics on performance using job satisfaction and affective commitment as mediating variables. The variables used include the dimensions of multidimensional work ethic profile (independent variable), job satisfaction and affective commitment (mediating variables), and performance (dependent variable). The survey research design was applied to meet the objective of this study, with 400 questionnaires had been sent to the lecturers in Central Java. The Structural Equation Model (SEM) was adopted to test some hypotheses developed in this study. The findings, based on the response rate of 76% (304 of the 400) of the questionnaires successfully collected and ready for analysis, are that not all dimensions of multidimensional work ethic profile directly influence the task performance, of the dimensions of  multidimensional work ethic profile, only the dimension of hard work directly and significantly influence the task performance, job satisfaction mediates some of the dimensions of multidimensional work ethic profile on the task performance, and affective<br />commitment do not mediate the influence of all dimensions of multidimensional work ethic profile on the task performance.

A study was undertaken in Mexico, Colombia, and El Salvador to determine the impact of a management training program on health managers' job performance. A quasi-experimental design was used where in the baseline study an intervention group of 85 district health managers in the three countries was compared with a control group of 71 managers who did not receive the training program. After the implementation of an 18-month training program (which included 5-day training workshops and a series of tasks to be carried out between the workshops), the outcome in terms of improved job performance (i.e. use of predefined management techniques) was measured through twelve management performance indicators. The data collection tools were two questionnaires, participant observation in managers' workplaces, focus group discussions, staff interviews, and document analysis. In Mexico, the control group showed 8.3 times weaker management performance compared to the intervention group; in Colombia the value was 3.6 and in El Salvador 2.4. Factors associated with a successful training outcome were: (a) training techniques, (b) strengthening of enabling factors, and (c) reinforcement mechanisms.

Purpose Counterfeiting is an increasingly global phenomenon that threatens the economy as a whole and also presents a risk for the consumers. The purpose of this study is to explore moral emotions along with moral awareness and moral judgment with respect to their influence in the consumption of counterfeits. Design/methodology/approach An online questionnaire was distributed among participants (n = 225) who were asked to respond to a counterfeit purchase scenario. Findings Results highlight the importance of moral awareness as an essential element of moral decision-making. Also, moral emotions were found to influence moral judgment as well as purchase intention. Research limitations/implications A limitation refers to the fact that a scenario was used to evoke participants’ emotional responses. Although the situation was realistic and the majority of the people could very well imagine experiencing the reported scenario, results might change in an actual purchase situation. Practical Implications This study’s findings may be particularly relevant for authorities and educators who design campaigns to curtail counterfeit consumption, thus seeking to encourage consumers to recognize the several negative consequences that result from counterfeiting behavior. Originality/value This is one of the few studies that examine the impact of cognitive and emotional influences in a counterfeit purchase decision. Fighting this problem requires an in-depth understanding of consumers’ motivations and how they feel about engaging in this morally questionable behavior.

28 Background: Metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma (mGA) is frequently associated with debilitating symptoms that negatively impact quality of life. We aim to determine the rate of palliative care (PC) use in mGA and the factors which are associated with receipt of PC. Methods: Using the National Cancer Database, mGA patients were selected. Receipt of PC as defined by the NCDB participant use file was correlated to demographic and clinicopathologic factors. As defined according to NCDB, PC treatment included surgery, radiation, systemic therapy, and pain management to alleviate symptoms. Logistic regression was performed to assess the impact of factors on the likelihood of receiving PC. Overall survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using log-rank tests. Results: Between 2004 and 2013, 45519 patients with mGA and reported PC status were identified. Median age was 66 years (IQR: 55-76 years) and 64% were male. 7365 (16.2%) patients received PC. PC utilization increased over time (2004-6 13.4%, 2007-10 15.8%, 2011-13 19.1%; p < 0.001). Factors associated with PC on univariate analysis included insurance status, education level, income, sex, race, Charlson/Deyo comorbidity score, and year of diagnosis (all p < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, female sex (0.87, 95%CI: 0.83-0.92) and minority race were associated with less receipt of PC (Hispanic 0.73, 95%CI: 0.66-0.80, Black 0.87, 95%CI: 0.80-0.95, Asian 0.89, 95%CI: 0.77-0.98 compared to non-Hispanic White patients). Higher education level was associated with greater receipt of PC (1.46, 95%CI: 1.31-1.62). Receipt of PC was associated with decreased overall survival (PC 4.8 months vs no PC 6.0 months; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Although use of PC has increased over time, PC is underutilized in mGA. Disparities exist in receipt of PC in regard to race, gender, and education. Additional research is necessary to better optimize PC use in mGA and mitigate potential disparities.

Stress at the workplace has an influence on job performance, employees' health, their job satisfaction and turnover intention. Due to frequent and intensive contact with customers, as well as characteristics of working in the hotel industry, stress can occur as a consequence. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to determine whether there is a difference in the perceived sources of stress among front office and housekeeping employees according to their sociodemographic characteristics (gender, age, education level and marital status). The research included 167 employees from the front office and housekeeping departments. The results show that sociodemographic characteristics of employees do not have an impact on their perceptions of sources of stress at the workplace. In addition, the impact of the working department on the perception is not significant. Due to the size of the sample, the generalization is not possible, but the results obtained in this study can be a guideline for the identification and reduction of the sources of stress in observed hotel departments.
