Sustainable development is one of the most important preconditions for preserving resources and balanced functioning of a complete supply chain in different areas. Taking into account the complexity of sustainable development and a supply chain, different decisions have to be made day-to-day, requiring the consideration of different parameters. One of the most important decisions in a sustainable supply chain is the selection of a sustainable supplier and, often the applied methodology is multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). In this paper, a new hybrid MCDM model for evaluating and selecting suppliers in a sustainable supply chain for a construction company has been developed. The evaluation and selection of suppliers have been carried out on the basis of 21 criteria that belong to all aspects of sustainability. The determination of the weight values of criteria has been performed applying the full consistency method (FUCOM), while a new rough complex proportional assessment (COPRAS) method has been developed to evaluate the alternatives. The rough Dombi aggregator has been used for averaging in group decision-making while evaluating the significance of criteria and assessing the alternatives. The obtained results have been checked and confirmed using a sensitivity analysis that implies a four-phase procedure. In the first phase, the change of criteria weight was performed, while, in the second phase, rough additive ratio assessment (ARAS), rough weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS), rough simple additive weighting (SAW), and rough multi-attributive border approximation area comparison (MABAC) have been applied. The third phase involves changing the parameter ρ in the modeling of rough Dombi aggregator, and the fourth phase includes the calculation of Spearman’s correlation coefficient (SCC) that shows a high correlation of ranks.

The increase of environmental pollution has led to the rise of sustainable awareness in recent years. This trend has motivated various industries to recognize the importance of implementing sustainable supply chain practices to seek economic, environmental and social advantages. From a sustainability perspective, selecting a suitable supplier is the main component of modern enterprises. It is also a challenging problem since several criteria concerning supplier selection are interdependent with a complex character. Therefore, the contribution of this paper is a new extension to multi-criteria decision-making model (MCDM) under an intuitionistic fuzzy environment for sustainable supplier selection (SSS) based on sustainable supply chain management SSCM practices. It consists of intuitionistic fuzzy set theory (IFS) with a decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) combined with an analytic network process (ANP) to identify uncertainties and interdependencies among criteria as well as analyzing the criteria weights. We modified Vise Kriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) to evaluate and rank the desired level of sustainable supplier performance. The suggested approach is conducted by a case study from the Thailand palm oil industry. Results show that the proposed model not only can find the most suitable sustainable supplier, but also the enterprises can aid their suppliers in improving sustainability by using the proposed method and can improve enterprises’ socio-environmental performance, which is key to achieving sustainable development.

Background:: Selection of Sustainable Suppliers is a key term in sustainable supply chain management. This is the reason to choose the supplier who will support the company to implement sustainability in its business, especially in the supply chain. Objective:: The aim of this paper is to establish a new innovative model for decision-making on based on a fuzzy approach. Methods:: This decision-making problem is solved by applying multi-criteria decision-making, since there are several cri-teria according to which a decision should be made: economic, social and environmental criteria. In order to make the final decision on supply chain better and safer, the social criteria were modified in this paper, adding ethical criteria. The example with modified social criteria in this paper was shown on the example of the company "Voćar" Brčko, which deals with the production of food products. In this paper, the fuzzy Measurement Alternatives and Ranking according to COmpromise Solution method was used. Results:: The findings have shown that supplier A1 have the best results which were confirmed with the first sensitivity analysis. However, the second sensitivity analysis has shown that supplier A5 was better than supplier A1 in 14 scenarios. Due to these findings, no unanimous decision can be made about which supplier among the two in this case would contribute more. Conclusion:: This paper has shown that selection of sustainable suppliers is crucial for any company focused on the prin-ciples of sustainability in business. Moreover, this paper has shown that it is sometimes very difficult to select just one supplier.

Sustainability in a supply chain is a demand on the one hand and a challenge on the other. It is necessary to balance between these dimensions in order to fulfill the purpose of the supply chain. Therefore, in the first phase—i.e., in procurement—it is necessary to take into account its sustainability. In this paper, a sustainable supplier was selected respecting all three aspects of sustainability. The evaluation was carried out on the basis of a total of 21 criteria arranged into two levels and three groups. A new Interval Rough SAW (simple additive weighting) method, which represents a contribution to the treatment of problems belonging to the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), was developed. The integration of interval rough numbers with the SAW method was completed. In addition, the full consistency method (FUCOM) was applied to determine the weights of the criteria. The integrated FUCOM-Interval Rough SAW model enables treatment of multi-criteria problems while reducing subjectivity to the lowest possible level and eliminating uncertainties and ambiguities. The results obtained were determined throughout a sensitivity analysis consisting of a change in the weight of the criteria and the influence of dynamic matrices on the change in ranks. In addition, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (SCC) was calculated to confirm the stability of the previously obtained results.

The selection of sustainable suppliers (SSS) is the first step in applying a sustainable supply chain and sustainable production. Therefore, it is necessary to select the supplier that best meets the set sustainability criteria. However, the selection of suppliers cannot be done by applying symmetric information, because the company does not have complete information, so asymmetric information should be used when selecting suppliers. Since the SSS applies three main sustainability criteria, environmental, social, and economic criteria, this decision-making problem is solved by applying multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). In order to solve the SSS for the needs of agricultural production, interval fuzzy logic was applied in this research, and six suppliers with whom agricultural pharmacies in Semberija work were taken into consideration. The application of interval fuzzy logic was performed using the methods PIPRECIA (Pivot pairwise relative criteria importance assessment) and MABAC (Multi-Attributive Border Approximation Area Comparison). Using the PIPRECIA method, the weights of criteria and sub-criteria were determined. Results of this method showed that the most significant are economic criteria, followed by the social criteria. The ecological criteria are the least important. The supplier ranking was performed using the MABAC method. The results showed that supplier A4 best meets the sustainability criteria, while supplier A6 is the worst. These results were confirmed using other MCDM methods, followed by the sensitivity analysis. According to the attained results, agricultural producers from Semberija should buy the most products from suppliers A4, in order to better apply sustainability in production. This paper showed how to decision make when there is asymmetric information about suppliers.

PurposeDue to stern management policies and increased community attentiveness, sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) performs a vast component in endeavor operation and production management. Sustainable circular supplier selection (SCSS) and evaluation presented the environmental and social concerns in the fields of circular economy and sustainable supplier selection. Choosing the optimal SCSS is vital for organizations to persuade SSCM, as specified in various researches. Based on the subjectivity of human behavior, the selection of ideal SCSS often involves uncertain information, and the Pythagorean fuzzy sets (PFSs) have a huge capability to tackle strong vagueness, uncertainty and inaccuracy in the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) procedure. Here, a framework is developed to assess and establish suitable suppliers in the SSCM and the circular economy.Design/methodology/approachThis paper introduced an extended framework using the evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS) with PFSs and implemented it to solve the SCSS in the manufacturing sector. Firstly, the PFSs to handle the uncertain information of decision experts (DEs) is employed. Secondly, a novel divergence measure and parametric score function for calculating the criteria weights are proposed. Thirdly, an extended decision-making approach, known as PF-EDAS, is introduced.FindingsThe outcomes and comparative discussion show that the developed method is efficient and capable of facilitating the DEs to choose desirable SCSS. Therefore, the proposed framework can be used by organizations to assess and establish suitable suppliers in the SCSS process in the circular economy.Originality/valueSelecting the optimal sustainable circular supplier (SCS) in the manufacturing sector is important for organizations to persuade SSCM, as specified in various research. Pythagorean fuzzy soft set (PFSS) is the most influential and operative extension of the Pythagorean fuzzy set (PFS), which contracts with the parametrized standards of the substitutes. It is also a generalized form of the intuitionistic fuzzy soft set (IFSS) and delivers a well and accurate estimation in the decision-making (DM) procedure. The primary purpose is to prolong and propose ideas related to Einstein’s ordered weighted aggregation operator from fuzzy to PFSS, comforting the condition that the sum of the degrees of membership function and nonmembership function is less than one and the sum of the squares of the degree of membership function and nonmembership function is less than one. We present a novel Pythagorean fuzzy soft Einstein ordered weighted averaging (PFSEOWA) operator based on operational laws for Pythagorean fuzzy soft numbers. Furthermore, some essential properties such as idempotency, boundedness, and homogeneity for the proposed operator have been presented in detail. The choice of a sustainable supplier is also examined as an essential part of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and is considered a crucial multiattribute group decision-making (MAGDM) issue. In some MAGDM problems, the relationship between alternatives and uncertain environments will be the main reason for deficient consequences. We have presented a novel aggregation operator for PFSS information to choose sustainable suppliers to cope with those complex issues. The Pythagorean fuzzy soft number (PFSN) helps to represent the obscure information in such real-world perspectives. The priority relationship of PFSS details is beneficial in coping with SSCM. The proposed method’s effectiveness is proved by comparing advantages, effectiveness, and flexibility among the existing studies.

The integration of sustainable development concepts with the traditional supply chain improves the environmental performance and green image among its stakeholders. During adoption of sustainability concepts in traditional supply chain management, some hurdles can be anticipated. These hurdles are called barriers, and industries must equip themselves to remove them. The difficulties associated with removal of barriers are identification and analysis for selection significant barriers. In this chapter, the significant barriers for incorporating sustainability in supply chain of high volume manufacturing are consolidated from the literature and categorized into seven groups: people, strategic, environmental, economic, societal, regulatory, and functional. The widely used evaluation methods are interpretive structural modeling and DEMATEL for which the procedure and guidance to infer the results are detailed. The chapter is expected to support the practicing engineers involved in implementation of sustainable concepts in supply chain.
