The standardization activities of the fifth generation communications are clearly over and deployment has commenced globally. To sustain the competitive edge of wireless networks, industrial and academia synergy have begun to conceptualize the next generation of wireless communication systems (namely, sixth generation, (6G)) aimed at laying the foundation for the stratification of the communication needs of the 2030s. In support of this vision, this study highlights the most promising lines of research from the recent literature in common directions for the 6G project. Its core contribution involves exploring the critical issues and key potential features of 6G communications, including: (i) vision and key features; (ii) challenges and potential solutions; and (iii) research activities. These controversial research topics were profoundly examined in relation to the motivation of their various sub-domains to achieve a precise, concrete, and concise conclusion. Thus, this article will contribute significantly to opening new horizons for future research directions.

Simultaneously with the beginning of the implementation of the fifth generation wireless networks (5G systems), the research of the next generation mobile wireless systems - the sixth generation network 6G, has began. Having in mind the already started considerations on the components of the future 6G technology, it is necessary to follow the given technological trends, which are waiting for us beyond 5G era. This paper will explain the range of communication needs and technologies within the future 6G. 6G is expected to include three main aspects, mobile ultra broadband, super Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The paper will present an overview of the crucial technology that is planned to achieve the first two aspects. In particular, THz communication could be used to support mobile ultra-broadband, while symbiotic radio and satellite communications to support super IoT. For each technology, the basic basic principle of functioning, key challenges and currently current approaches and solutions will be given. It will be especially emphasized what 6G brings in relation to 5G, ie what are the key new characteristics.

Direct inter-vehicular communications are presumably more difficult to perform than communications within a cellular network or between a moving vehicle and the roadside, where there is a large fixed infrastructure. It is assumed in this chapter that the mobile channel between the two vehicles is so rapidly variable that it is not possible to measure it in real-time. The authors therefore selected and considered only modulation and coding techniques for which the knowledge of the channel state was not necessary at both the transmitter and the receiver, that is, differential and noncoherent communications. To be realistic, only space-time coding communication systems with two transmit antennas were considered. The authors have purposely avoided too much theoretical development, with the intent of making clear that the implementation of all the techniques mentioned in this chapter, it should not be a too difficult task for the electronic technology of today. Future research directions are also suggested to conclude the chapter.

Machine learning (ML) has evolved to the point that this technique enhances communications and enables fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks. ML is great to get insights about complex networks that use large amounts of data, and for predictive and proactive adaptation to dynamic wireless environments. ML has become a crucial technology for mobile broadband communication. Special case goes to deep learning (DL) in immersive media. Through this chapter, the goal is to present open research challenges and applications of ML. An exploration of the potential of ML-based solution approaches in the context of 5G primary eMBB, mMTC, and uHSLLC services is presented, evaluating at the same time open issues for future research, including standardization activities of algorithms and data formats.

There has been a recent surge in the publication of academic literature examining various aspects of emergency inventory management for disasters. This article contains a timely literature review of these studies, beginning with an exposition of the characteristics of storage and delivery options for emergency supplies, with a particular emphasis on the differences between emergency inventories and conventional inventory management. Using a novel classification scheme and a comprehensive search of the inventory-related literature, an overview of the emergency inventory management studies is also presented. Finally, based on this extensive review, a discussion is presentedbased on the critical issues and key findings related to the emergency inventory management field, and include suggestions for future research directions.

AbstractMeasuring lexical semantic relatedness is an important task in Natural Language Processing (NLP). It is often a prerequisite to many complex NLP tasks. Despite an extensive amount of work dedicated to this area of research, there is a lack of an up-to-date survey in the field. This paper aims to address this issue with a study that is focused on four perspectives: (i) a comparative analysis of background information resources that are essential for measuring lexical semantic relatedness; (ii) a review of the literature with a focus on recent methods that are not covered in previous surveys; (iii) discussion of the studies in the biomedical domain where novel methods have been introduced but inadequately communicated across the domain boundaries; and (iv) an evaluation of lexical semantic relatedness methods and a discussion of useful lessons for the development and application of such methods. In addition, we discuss a number of issues in this field and suggest future research directions. It is believed that this work will be a valuable reference to researchers of lexical semantic relatedness and substantially support the research activities in this field.

In this paper, organic optoelectronic research activities in the field of benzo[1,2-c;4,5-c′]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole (BBT)-based materials are reviewed. Synthetic pathways to the BBT core and its computational studies are described. Collective observations from separate reports suggest open-shell biradical nature of BBT-based materials. Future research directions for these materials are also described.

Since its inception in 1997, RoboCup has developed into a truly unique and long-standing research community advancing robotics and artificial intelligence through various challenges, benchmarks, and test fields. The main purposes of this article are to evaluate the research and development achievements so far and to identify new challenges and related new research issues. Unlike other robot competitions and research conferences, RoboCup eliminates the boundaries between pure research activities and the development of full system designs with hardware and software implementations at a site open to the public. It also creates specific scientific and technological research and development challenges to be addressed. In this article, we provide an overview of RoboCup, including its league structure and related research issues. We also review recent studies across several research categories to show how participants (called RoboCuppers) address the research and development challenges before, during, and after the annual competitions. Among the diversity of research issues, we highlight two unique aspects of the challenges: the platform design of the robots and the game evaluations. Both of these aspects contribute to solving the research and development challenges of RoboCup and verifying the results from a common perspective (i.e., a more objective view). Finally, we provide concluding remarks and discuss future research directions.

The current and future wireless communication systems, WiFi, fourth generation (4G), fifth generation (5G), Beyond5G, and sixth generation (6G), are mixtures of many frequency spectrums. Thus, multi-functional common or shared aperture antenna modules, which operate at multiband frequency spectrums, are very desirable. This paper presents a multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna design for the 5G/B5G Internet of Things (IoT). The proposed MIMO antenna is designed to operate at multiple bands, i.e., at 3.5 GHz, 3.6 GHz, and 3.7 GHz microwave Sub-6 GHz and 28 GHz mm-wave bands, by employing a single radiating aperture, which is based on a tapered slot antenna. As a proof of concept, multiple tapered slots are placed on the corner of the proposed prototype. With this configuration, multiple directive beams pointing in different directions have been achieved at both bands, which in turn provide uncorrelated channels in MIMO communication. A 3.5 dBi realized gain at 3.6 GHz and an 8 dBi realized gain at 28 GHz are achieved, showing that the proposed design is a suitable candidate for multiple wireless communication standards at Sub-6 GHz and mm-wave bands. The final MIMO structure is printed using PCB technology with an overall size of 120 × 60 × 10 mm3, which matches the dimensions of a modern mobile phone.
