The vestibular system of the mammalian inner ear senses angular and linear velocity of the head and enables animals to maintain their balance. Vestibular anatomy has been studied extensively in order to link its structure to particular kinds of locomotion. Available evidence indicates that, in primates, slow-moving species show higher levels of vestibular variation than fast-moving taxa. We analysed intraspecific morphological variation and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) levels in the semicircular canal systems of six species of lorisiform primates: three slow-moving lorisids and three fast-moving galagids. Our results showed clear differences in levels of intraspecific variation between slow-moving and fast-moving taxa. Higher levels of variation were responsible for deviations from coplanarity for synergistic pairs of canals in slower taxa. Lorisids also presented higher levels of FA than galagids. FA is a better indicator of agility than intraspecific variation. These results suggest that in order to function efficiently in fast taxa, semicircular canal systems must develop as symmetrically as possible, and should minimise the deviation from coplanarity for synergistic pairs. Higher levels of variation and asymmetry in slow-moving taxa may be related to lower levels of stabilising selection on the vestibular system, linked to a lower demand for rapid postural changes.

AbstractMorphological variation between two closely related species in the genus Amblyseius Berlese was examined by numerical taxonomic methods. Multivariate tests indicated that A. canadensis Chant and Hansell and A. novaescotiae (Chant) represent two separate and distinct morphological groups. This supports their taxonomic retention as valid species. Intraspecific morphological variation was also examined and found to be correlated with climatic and host plant variables.

Fast moving in retail industry is the latest trading industry in trading chain. The study is to identify the condition of retail industry in Indonesia. This uses normative juridical approach. The research material is gathered by literature or document review. The analysis for modern retail industry is conducted through qualitative, thus explaining law material gathered from library being selected, arranging systematically, and finally getting conclusion figured to answer problems related to the rules for monopoly and dysfunction business competition in retail industry. The study result showed that modern market, which so far having a good performance, will have challenges. One biggest challenge is the potential for slow-moving revenue growth as the effects of slow-moving economic caused by global crisis.

Operasional gudang memiliki berbagai aktivitas inti yang saling berkaitan satu dengan yang lainnya, seperti aktivitas receiving, storage, dan picking. Aktivitas inti ini atau yang biasa disebut inbound dan outbound harus dikerjakan dalam waktu yang singkat dan meminimalisir tingkat kesalahan agar tidak mengganggu keberlangsungan alur masuk dan keluarnya barang di gudang. Beberapa hal yang dapat mengganggu aliran barang di gudang di antaranya adalah terjadinya bottle neck di area receiving, waktu proses pencarian barang yang lama, dan 70% waktu proses order picking di bawah waktu standar. Permasalahan-permasalahan ini terjadi salah satunya dikarenakan pengelolaan barang di gudang masih manual atau belum menggunakan sistem informasi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah merancang sistem informasi untuk membantu operasional gudang guna meminimalisir kesalahan-kesalahan yang dapat mengganggu aliran masuka dan keluarnya barang dari gudang, dengan menggunakan pendekatan FSN Analysis. Hasil dari pengolahan data menggunakan FSN Analysis ini, dapat membantu dalam mengetahui produk-produk yang masuk kedalam kategori fast moving, slow moving, dan non-moving.

Changes in posture can affect the resting length of the diaphragm, requiring alterations in the activity of both the abdominal muscles and the diaphragm to maintain stable ventilation. To determine the role of the vestibular system in regulating respiratory muscle discharges during postural changes, spontaneous diaphragm and rectus abdominis activity and modulation of the firing of these muscles during nose-up and ear-down tilt were compared before and after removal of labyrinthine inputs in awake cats. In vestibular-intact animals, nose-up and ear-down tilts from the prone position altered rectus abdominis firing, whereas the effects of body rotation on diaphragm activity were not statistically significant. After peripheral vestibular lesions, spontaneous diaphragm and rectus abdominis discharges increased significantly (by ∼170%), and augmentation of rectus abdominis activity during nose-up body rotation was diminished. However, spontaneous muscle activity and responses to tilt began to recover after a few days after the lesions, presumably because of plasticity in the central vestibular system. These data suggest that the vestibular system provides tonic inhibitory influences on rectus abdominis and the diaphragm and in addition contributes to eliciting increases in abdominal muscle activity during some changes in body orientation.

Studies of coronal transients observed in white-light (Gosling et al., 1976) have shown that fast-moving events (≤ 400 km s-1) are closely associated with flares and with type II and IV radio bursts while slow-moving events are not. We now report the first detection of the radio counterpart of a slow-moving transient. The event of 1974 January 21 is shown to be visible on maps of the quiet Sun made at a frequency of 80 MHz.

Four species of Nematomorpha are recorded from NE Spain, representing the first reliable data on the group in the Iberian peninsula. Gordius aquations Linnaeus, 1758, G. plicatulus Heinze, 1937, Gordionus wolterstorffii (Camerano, 1888) and Paragordius tricuspidatus (Dufour, 1828) are redescribed based on scanning electron microscope observations. Notes on intraspecific morphological variation and ecology of the species are given.

A significant intraspecific morphological variation was observed in the eastern Pacific snapping shrimp Synalpheus superus Kim & Abele, 1989, especially in the proportions of some cephalotoracic appendages. The northern limit of the distribution of S. superus is expanded from Panama to Guerrero, Mexico. We also consider that Synalpheus fritzmuelleriCoutière, 1909 is most probably not an amphi-American species. Its former status as such was due to taxonomic misinterpretations by Hernández Aguilera et al. (1986) and probably by Coutière (1909) himself, although his questionable record of a single specimen of S. fritzmuelleri from the Gulf of California could not be verified, because the specimen could not be located and may be lost.

Microearthquakes at the base of slow-moving Ice Stream C occur many times more frequently than at the base of fast-moving Ice Stream B. We suggest that the microearthquake source sites are so-called “sticky spots”, defined as limited zones of stronger Subglacial material interspersed within a weaker matrix. The fault-plane area of the microearthquakes (O(102m2)) is therefore a measure of the size of the sticky spots. The spatial density of the microearthquakes (O(10 km-2)) is a measure of the distribution of sticky spots.The average stress drop associated with these microearthquakes is consistent with an ice-stream bed model of weak subglacial till interspersed with stronger zones that support much or all of the basal shear stress. We infer a weak inter-sticky-spot material by the large distances (O(103m)), relative to fault radius, to which the microearthquake stress change is transmitted.
