Changes in morphological and physiological parameters of adult marsh frogs at different phases of their feeding and breeding technology

The article discusses the possibility of keeping a marsh frog in a farm on the territory of central Russia to obtain delicious meat. For this, at different stages of keeping and after spawning, body weight and length, as well as hematological parameters, were studied. During the study, marsh frogs were kept in different conditions, depending on the season of the year, and fed on different foods. During the summer and early autumn, when kept in a summer enclosure in the air temperature range from 15 to 23 °C, when fed with natural food (live invertebrates) and fed with cultivated cockroaches and flour beetle, a positive increase and an increase in weight was observed. Hematological indices were slightly below the conditional norm, but the number of segmented neutrophils and eosinophils in frogs in the aviary turned out to be quite high, since the natural food they consumed could activate antiparasitic immunity. When the frogs were kept in an aquarium at an air temperature of 22 °C and fed only with cultivated food, the distribution of weight gain and plumb weight was approximately equal. After hibernation at 4 °C, the frogs lost a lot of weight and were placed in a special spawning pool. After hormonal stimulation of frogs with a mixture of drugs “chorionic gonadotropin” and “surfagon”, successful spawning was observed with 100% fertilization of eggs, while the plumb line was small and more uniform. A low number of red blood cells and a low hemoglobin were found in the blood. The total number of neutrophils in frogs kept in the pool decreased, and the number of monocytes increased by 3 times, exceeding the conditional norm by half, which may indicate a monocytic-macrophage reaction necessary for the resorption of remnants of reproductive products. There was also a rapid development of a conditioned reflex in frogs to feeding on a floating feeder, which is an important link in the mechanization of frog farms.

Introduction: Exercise at various durations and intensities impact on blood and stem cells. This pilot study examined the effects of 30 minutes of treadmill walking on hematological indices and progenitor stem cells CD34+ in healthy subjects. Materials and methods: A total of 17 non-smoking, healthy students, aged 20 to 22 years participated. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells, platelets, and stem cell CD34+ numbers were assessed before and after moderate exercise. Statistical analyses examined the relationships between CD34+ cells versus hematological indices, age, and body mass index. Results: Following exercise, significant increases were observed in leukocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and CD34+ cells numbers. For CD34+ cells, a fourfold increase was seen. Significant correlations between CD34+ cells, white blood cells, and neutrophils were found. Conclusion: Our results suggest that moderate exercise has a physiological impact on hematologic parameters and stem cells CD34+ in healthy subjects. Furthermore, our findings suggest that brief treadmill exercise may enhance tissue repair mechanisms so important in physiotherapy.

AbstractThe balance between reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant activity has an important role in oxidative stress associated diseases such as phenylketonuria (PKU). We aimed in this study to evaluate the possible association between oxidative balance and clinical features of PKU patients.Twenty patients and 50 healthy subjects were selected. Prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) was measured and phenylalanine (Phe), tyrosine (Tyr), Phe/Tyr ratio and hematological indices were determined.A significantly higher PAB value was observed in the patient group (152.0±14.1 HK unit) compared to the controls (88.1±13.88 HK) (p<0.05). There was significant correlation between PAB with serum Phe, Tyr, Phe/Tyr ratio, white blood cells (WBC) and red blood cells (RBC) counts.The serum PAB values were higher in patients with PKU and this was associated with the serum Phe and Tyr and Phe/Tyr ratio. Therefore, because of its low cost and simplicity to perform, PAB value might be considered as a useful monitoring marker among the other tools in these patients.

<p>The article deals with the results of search of the influence of developed complex liposomal drug on dynamics of hematological parameters of rat organisms under conditions of simulated oxidative stress caused by the use of carbon tetrachloride. Intramuscular injection of 50% tetrachloromethane to rats at a dose of 0.25 ml per 100 g of body weight causes antigenic load on the body and leads to disruption of physiologic level of hematological indices of experimental animal organisms. This indicates the number reduce of red blood cells, hemoglobin content, hemoglobin concentration in erythrocyte, increasing the number of leukocytes, mass of hemoglobin in erythrocyte and increased of color index.</p><p>To normalize the hematological indices of rat organisms for the development of oxidative stress it is advisable to apply the liposomal drug that incorporates contains butafosfan, interferon, milk thistle and vitamins. When using liposomal drug to rats, under conditions of oxidative stress, the normalization of hematological indices comes in blood, namely on 14th day within physiological variables were indicators of the number of erythrocytes of hemoglobin content, white blood cell count and indices of red blood cells compared to controls, indicating a recovery of hematopoietic function of marrow.</p>

SummaryPlasminogen binds to endothelial and blood cells as well as to fibrin, where the zymogen is efficiently activated and protected from inhibition by α2-antiplasmin. In the present study we have found that complestatin, a peptide-like metabolite of a streptomyces, enhances binding of plasminogen to cells and fibrin. Complestatin, at concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 μM, doubled 125I-plasminogen binding to U937 cells both in the absence and presence of lipoprotein(a), a putative physiological competitor of plasminogen. The binding of 125I-plasminogen in the presence of complestatin was abolished by e-aminocaproic acid, suggesting that the lysine binding site(s) of the plasminogen molecule are involved in the binding. Equilibrium binding analyses indicated that complestatin increased the maximum binding of 125I-plasminogen to U937 cells without affecting the binding affinity. Complestatin was also effective in increasing 125I-plasminogen binding to fibrin, causing 2-fold elevation of the binding at ~1 μM. Along with the potentiation of plasminogen binding, complestatin enhanced plasmin formation, and thereby increased fibrinolysis. These results would provide a biochemical basis for a pharmacological stimulation of endogenous fibrinolysis through a promotion of plasminogen binding to cells and fibrin.

The results of the technological assessment of new apple, cherry, black currant, red currant and gooseberry cultivars of VNIISPK breeding for the suitability for the natural food production are given. As a result, the cultivars that are promising for cultivation in raw plantings have been selected. For the production of raw materials in the juice industry, apple cultivars with a high juice yield and content of soluble solids higher than 10.0% were selected: ‘Bolotovskoye’ (Vf), ‘Candil Orlovsky’ (Vf), ‘Osipovskoye’ (3x), ‘Rozhdestvenskoye’ ((Vf + 3x), ‘Zaryanka’ (Vm), ‘Priokskoye’ ((Vf + Co), etc. Based on the long-term study of cultivars for their suitability for compote, jam and jelly, the cultivars that are most suitable for these types of processing are identified. It has been found that taking into account the daily needs of vitamins C and P as the most important antioxidants, all processed products from black currant can serve as their sources, all processed products from cherries, as well as apple juice and gooseberry marmalade can serve as a source of P-active compounds. All columnar apple cultivars as well as ‘Bolotovskoye’, ‘Rozhdestvenskoye’, ‘Veteran’, ‘Imrus’, etc. show high suitability for the production of apple chips. Cherry cultivars ‘Rovesnitsa’, ‘Putinka’, ‘Podarok Uchitelyam’ and ‘Novella’ are suitable for dried fruit. Based on the long-term studies of the technological qualities of the VNIISPK gene pool, a new generation assortment has been formed that has an optimal combination of chemical and technological indicators of fruits that meet modern technological requirements and are suitable for cultivation in the raw plantations of Central Russia.

1. A population of interneurons that control feeding behavior in the mollusk Pleurobranchaea has been analyzed by dye injection and intracellular stimulation/recording in whole animals and reduced preparations. The population consists of 12-16 somata distributed in two bilaterally symmetrical groups on the anterior edge of the cerebropleural ganglion (brain). On the basis of their position adjacent to the cerebral lobes, these cells have been named paracerebral neurons (PCNs). This study concerns pme subset pf [MCs. the large, phasic ones, which have the strongest effect on the feeding rhythm (21). 2. Each PCN sends a descending axon via the ipsilateral cerebrobuccal connective to the buccal ganglion. Axon branches have not been detected in other brain or buccal nerves and hence the PCNs appear to be interneurons. 3. In whole-animal preparations, tonic intracellular depolarization of the PNCs causes them to discharge cyclic bursts of action potentials interrupted by a characteristic hyperpolarization. In all specimens that exhibit feeding behavior, the interburst hyperpolarization is invariably accompanied by radula closure and the beginning of proboscis retraction (the "bite"). No other behavorial effect of PCN stimulation has been observed. 4. In whole-animal preparations, the PCNs are excited by food and tactile stimulation of the oral veil, rhinophores, and tentacles. When such stimuli induce feeding the PCNs discharge in the same bursting pattern seen during tonic PCN depolarization, with the cyclic interburst hyperpolarization phase locked to the bit. When specimens egest an unpalatable object by cyclic buccal movements, however, the PCNs are silent. The PCNs therefore exhibit properties expected of behaviorally specific "command" neurons for feeding. 5. Silencing one or two PCNs by hyperpolarization may weaken but does not prevent feeding induced by natural food stimuli. Single PCNs therefore can be sufficient but are not necessary to induction of feeding behavior. Instead the PCNs presumably operate as a population to control feeding. 6. In isolated nervous system preparations tonic extracellular stimulation of the stomatogastric nerve of the buccal ganglion elicits a cyclic motor rhythm that is similar in general features to the PNC-induced motor rhythm. Bursts of PCN action potentials intercalated at the normal phase position in this cycle intensify the buccal rhythm. Bursts of PCN impulses intercalated at abnormal phase positions reset the buccal rhythm. The PCNs, therefore, also exhibit properties expected of pattern-generator elements and/or coordinating neurons for the buccal rhythm. 7. The PCNs are recruited into activity when the buccal motor rhythm is elicited by stomatogastric nerve stimulation or stimulation of the reidentifiable ventral white cell. The functional synergy between the PCNs and the buccal rhythm is therefore reciprocal. 8...

ABSTRACT Differentiating tuberculosis (TB) from pneumonia remains a challenge. We evaluated the cytokine profiles of whole blood cells from patients with TB (n = 38) or pneumonia (n = 30) and from healthy individuals (n = 30) before and after stimulating cells with ESAT-6 or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). When the percent change in the levels of gamma interferon (IFN-γ) after stimulation with ESAT-6 was used in receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis (a graphic method to determine the diagnostic accuracy of a test) to identify a patient with TB, the area under the curve (AUC) was 90.4%, and a cutoff point of a 3.59% change produced a corresponding sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of over 80%. When the change in IFN-γ after stimulation of blood cells with LPS was used to identify a patient with pneumonia, the AUC reached 89.1%, and a cutoff point of 3.59% produced a sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of approximately 80% each. When the change in interleukin-12 (IL-12) after stimulation of blood cells with LPS was selected to define a patient with pneumonia, the AUC was 85.2%, and a cutoff point of 2.08% gave a sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 80.0%, 78.9%, and 79.4%, respectively. We conclude that the percent change in IFN-γ after stimulation of whole blood cells with ESAT-6 may differentiate patients with TB from patients with pneumonia. The percent change in IFN-γ and IL-12 after LPS stimulation of whole blood cells could differentiate patients with pneumonia from patients with TB.
