The everyday intimacies of friendship and flirting are not typically exploredin hook-up app research, nor is there much reflection on the intimacies of researching these media. This paper considers flirting and friendship as practices and methods that broaden the scope of current hook-up app research. We ask what these intimacies can produce to expand research approaches (and thus knowledge) of hook-up apps. As users and researchers of these apps, we consider negotiations of flirting and friendship between researchers and research partici- pants by exploring what it means to research with intimacy. Attention is given to the connections, conversations, and intimate encounters within hook-up research that are mostly absent from existing presentations of research findings. We sug- gest that greater attention to peripheral and intimate communication between researchers and participants can offer valuable methods for queering otherwise stabilised ways of knowing, using, and researching these platforms. Adding to the queer ethnographic tradition, we demonstrate how a processual and affective approach to hook-up app use encourages researchers to make visible our connec- tions to the media we research, and how these connections relate to the intima- cies that hook-up apps foster.

AbstractDespite recent attention to the relationship between the media and populist mobilisation in Latin America, there is a misfit between the everyday practices of journalists and the theoretical tools that we have for making sense of these practices. The objective of this article is to help reorient research on populism and the press in Latin America so that it better reflects the grounded practices and autochthonous norms of the region. To that end, I turn to the case of Venezuela, and a practice that has been largely escaped attention from scholars – the use of denuncias.

The paper is provoked by the rejection and falsification of the messages of the Istanbul Convention in Bulgaria and other post-communist countries which caused a wave of homophobia. The author tries to prove that neither in the communist period nor in the post-communist period a real emancipation of women was achieved, the theme of homosexuality was a taboo (in the communist period), over-presented in the first decade of the transition and later stigmatize by the rise of the populist nationalistic discourse. During the communist period, the so called “Unions of the fighters against fascism” turned into the male clientelistic networks granted with many privileges and marginalizing female antifascists. The critical discourse analysis of the press (1976) reveals male dominance and silencing of women playing mostly a decorative role. After the democratic changes the same male actors (nomenclature and former state security officers) benefited from the privatization, but the so called “mugs” (wrestlers) presented the new masculinity in the media: women were extremely sexualized and the new femininity was presented by the prostitutes and the girls in the entertaining industry, the professional women were rarely mentioned. The second part of the paper is a gender analysis of the lexical and grammatical system of the Bulgarian language. The analysis of the dominating metaphors reveals the means of male dominance in the everyday speech. Although the Slav languages have morphemes to denote women’s professions the media discourse prefers the male forms as more prestigious. The definite article and the plural forms serve to emphasise the male forms and to provide their euphony.

The article introduces a new concept of the Associative Dictionary of Media Events of the Early XXI Century. The project continues the traditions of common lexicography. As a rule, common lexicography is part of a special problem field described by various antinomies, e.g. objective vs. subjective in the language, individual vs. collective, descriptive vs. prescriptive approaches to the lexical representation in dictionaries, etc. The new dictionary represents a snapshot of everyday media consciousness and thus belongs to descriptive lexicographic projects. The dictionary is based on an associative experiment that involved Russian and French speakers. While traditional associative dictionaries contain the most frequent vocabulary, this project represents the conceptual meanings of various media events that exist in the everyday collective consciousness. The new dictionary belongs to media linguistics, descriptive lexicography, and interpretive linguistics. The present article describes the technology of its compilation, substantiates its relevance and novelty, and offers a sample entry using the case of the COVID-19 pandemic and its representation in the Russian language. Each media event consisted of two associative nests: one was based on the reactions of respondents who were familiar with the stimulus, whereas the other demonstrated reactions of participants unfamiliar with the media event. The epidemic being global, such key lexemes as "covid" and "coronavirus" lost their agnonymity for Russian speakers, and the media event appeared to have a zero agnonymous associative nest. The paper also provides a linguistic commentary on the covid entry, which summed up all the reactions received during the associative experiment. The lexicographic project can be of interest to specialists in media, political, cognitive, and cultural linguistics.

After government control over the media was liberalized in 1998, Indonesian journalists had a new mandate to explore new issues and foster public debate. Several studies had found evidence that women’s health worsened from 1997–99, yet media coverage of this topic was limited. To increase press coverage of reproductive health (RH) topics, the Population Council conducted an 18-month media project in collaboration with the State Ministry for Women’s Empowerment and other key agencies. The project focused on improving RH knowledge and reporting skills among 22 print journalists. Project staff monitored RH coverage in 22 major newspapers, magazines, and tabloids. After Indonesian journalists received background information and training on RH issues, the quality of their coverage improved. However, as noted in this brief, continued efforts are needed to provide media representatives with ideas for news stories and feature articles and training in use of research findings.

TV-journalism is popular: three-fourths of all germans inform themselfs in this way about the current events: may it be politics, culture or sports. But this linerar leading medium is aging. Through the deep-reaching digitalisation of the everyday-world, the last stage of the media-convergence is reached. Television and Web are melting together, for excample on the tablet, the smartphone or media library. „TV+AV-Journalismus“ is the first German-speaking opus that reflects this development for full-video journalism in a theoretical and practical way. In volume I, the most important theories of media and communication are flowing into an universal model of the digital journalism. This model is then subsequently applied to current trends and developments in praxis within volume II. Moreover, the most vital genres and formats are introduced plus the structural and economic requirements for journalism are explained. Theory and praxis are adressed. The author dares to bridge the gap between these, still separeted „two cultures“.

ABSTRACTThe development of technology that is termed ad Industrial Revolution 4.0 is an era of innovation developed rapidly that can help the creation of new technology. The research findings developed an Android based instructional media that was named as WINLAB (Wawasan didalam Pembelajaran Laboratorium), it consisted of the introduction of laboratory equipment, and it was expected to ease students in the learning process. It was Mixed Method Research. The research findings showed that this instructional media had the appropriateness with 85% percentage and very valid criterion by the validators of media experts, 96.92% percentage and very valid criterion by the validator of material experts, practicality test by Chemistry subject teachers showed 92% percentage with very practical criterion, the response test of the tenth-grade student of MIA 1 at State Sport Senior High School Riau Province stated that Android based instructional media was very good with 90% percentage. However, this research still consisted of some shortcomings, so it was expected in the future that the effectiveness test would be done to know the effectiveness of the media.  Keywords: WINLAB, android, chemistry instructional media  ABSTRAK Perkembangan teknologi yang diistilahkan dengan revolusi industri 4.0 merupakan era inovasi yang berkembang sangat pesat sehingga mampu membantu terciptanya teknologi baru. Hasil penelitian menghasilkan sebuah media pembelajaran berbasis android yang diberi nama “WINLAB” (Wawasan didalam Pembelajaran Laboratorium) yang berisikan tentang pengenalan alat-alat laboratorium yang diharapkan dapat memudahkan peserta didik dalam proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian Mixed Method. Research. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa media pembelajaran ini memiliki kelayakan oleh validator ahli media dengan persentase 85% dengan kriteria sangat valid, validator ahli materi dengan persentase 96.92% dengan kriteria sangat valid, uji praktikalitas oleh guru kimia dengan persentase 92% dengan kriteria sangat praktis, dan uji respon peserta didik kelas X MIA 1 SMAN Olahraga Provinsi Riau menyatakan bahwa media pembelajaran berbasis android sangat bagus dengan persentase 90%. Namun, penelitian ini masih memiliki beberapa kekurangan sehingga diharapkan kedepannya dilakukan uji efektifitas untuk mengetahui keefektifan media. Kata kunci: WINLAB, android, media pembelajaran kimia

This introductory chapter provides the background of a group of young men, referred to as the “Legendz,” who were urban American teenagers and second-generation immigrants. These young men were also self-identified and practicing Muslims embedded in a tightknit religious community. As some of the central cultural expectations associated with urban American teenage life were understood to be in tension with or even direct opposition to those locally associated with being a “good Muslim,” these young men led what can be called culturally contested lives. As such, the everyday lives of the Legendz were characterized in part by the presence of two competing sets of cultural expectations, or what can be called cultural rubrics: urban American teen culture, as manifested in their schools, peer groups, and the media they consumed; and religious Islam, as locally practiced in their mosque and by their families. Precisely how these young Muslim American men innovated and applied creative social solutions to their immediate cultural dilemmas, and how these efforts marked them as fundamentally similar to a broad range of other American teenagers, is the focus of this book.

Communication has proven to be an integral component of the terrorism phenomenon. To unravel the opportunities and challenges embedded in employing the media during terrorism, this chapter draws on research findings and practical experiences around the world to identify prime actors associated with this issue and to describe their objectives, tactics, and channels of communication. It is argued here that media constitute a vital resource in the war on terror with both terrorist organizations and states harnessing communication to advance their causes in the public sphere. In this context, four categories of media users have been identified: media institutions, terrorist organizations, governments, and citizen groups. The chapter discusses enduring issues associated with each actor's use of media and calls for evolving new conceptual frameworks for understanding media use during terrorism. It concludes by arguing that while we seem to have a huge pool of research findings and practical experiences related to using the media during terrorism, we seem to have a critical shortage in how we conceptually account for the different variables that define the use of media in terrorism situations.

This chapter explores a willingness on behalf of certain Muslim preachers to move beyond traditional preaching styles and create material that fits well within current social media practices. Focusing on the media productions of two Muslim preachers in Sweden, the chapter analyses how they experiment with oratory genres and modes. Using self-imposed brevity and multimodal communication in a type of media production defined here as a ‘reminder’, these preachers try to exhort their audiences to consider matters felt to be of pressing religious nature. The examples illustrate attempts to expand the reach of Islamic religious discourses beyond mosque environments and into the everyday life of an audience, with the potential of achieving a different kind of rhetorical work than a regular lecture or sermon.
