Background and Objectives: Physician discomfort, embarrassment, and perceived lack of time and/or training all play a role in preventing physicians from discussing sexual health with patients. Past research shows this discomfort begins in medical school. We aimed to determine whether teaching sexual health education increases medical students’ self-efficacy in discussing sexual health topics with adolescents. Methods: We emailed a retrospective pre/postsurvey to all medical students who taught sexual health education in a local middle school through Sex Ed by Brown Med (N=61). Results: Participation in Sex Ed by Brown Med improves self-efficacy in discussing nine sexual health topics and in performing nine advanced interviewing skills relevant to sexual health in a retrospective analysis using self-reported data. Conclusions: Programs similar to Sex Ed by Brown Med may be useful in improving medical students’ ability to adequately care for their patients’ sexual health by making future clinicians more comfortable when discussing the important topic of sexuality, and concurrently providing evidence-based comprehensive sexual health education to middle school students. Further research is needed to determine the impact of our program (and similar programs) before disseminating this model of sexual education.

Workshops and a final playful competition were held at a public high school. To carry them out, volunteer medical students were trained by colleagues, being introduced to the theoretical base and prepared for a horizontal and participatory approach, in the sense of a peer education strategy. A qualitative analysis was performed to evaluate the intervention’s impact, with field diaries, and a quantitative one, with the application of questionnaires. These evaluation tools showed significant knowledge gain. We also carried out an analysis of the impact of the project on the undergraduate medical students involved in the initiative, which revealed an increase in the theoretical knowledge, gain in confidence and strengthening of the ability to argue against prejudiced attitudes. The study results stress the interest of the subject and strategy as an academic community service initiative but also highlight aspects that need attention and improvement. Palavras-chave: Neoplasia Mamária; Promoção à Saúde; Detecção Precoce    The impact of the actions developed by extension project 'The Touch for Life' in the increase of the mammographies, performed by the public health of Jataí, GO Abstract: Breast cancer is considered a cause of high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, cancer screening in the population has been strongly recommended by the Ministry of Health. The extension project named 'The Touch for Life' was developed by the students from the medical course of the Federal University of Goiás, Jatai campus, Brazil, in partnership with the Municipal Health Secretary (MHS). The project has proposed actions such as 'October Pink D Day', with screening and diagnostic mammograms schedule, aiming at the prevention and health education of that disease. The activities start creating an environment where members from the project gather together to discuss the recent studies about this cancer and plan the next actions about this project. Moreover, quantitative analysis of the reports generated by the MHS from the monthly mammograms, from January 2015 to December in 2017, was performed, as well as generating reports about the number of monthly mammograms performed in Jatai. There was a significant increase in the mammograms performed by the Unified Health System in the city since the beginning of the project. In 2017, this increase was 200%, which has shown the importance of those actions that aimed at health education. These activities have confirmed the importance of awareness in this health area and the community involvement, which leads to benefits to all people involved in this project. Health Education and Communication in Occupational Health Services in FinlandThis article discusses health education and communication in Occupational Health Services (OHS) based on a questionnaire study conducted in Finnish OHS in 2005. The study focused on educational activities carried out by OH professionals and directed at individual employees, work communities and groups, and representatives of client organisations. The questionnaire was sent to 1132 OH professionals - physicians, nurses, physiotherapists and psychologists - working in 130 OHS units, and representing different OHS providers in Finland. 635 respondents (162 physicians, 342 nurses, 96 physiotherapists, 35 psychologists) returned the questionnaire. The overall response rate was 58 %. There were statistically significant differences in educational activities by different professional groups; differences were also related to the length of working experience in OHS. For all OH professionals, individual employees were the primary clients of health education and communication. Education was less often directed at work communities and representatives of client organisations. However, many issues related to health and well-being at work are not within the reach of individual employees. The impact of health education would be more evident if it also reached those organisational stakeholders with discretion in decision-making. Furthermore, OH personnel should pay attention to the social aspect of learning and work more with groups and work communities.

The goal of the paper is to describe the extent to which medical students and professionals are vulnerable to extreme stress. A select review of existing literature on this area has been undertaken, using the English-language online databases EBSCO, Medline and PubMed. The search has identified 36 citations relating to 6324 medical students and 28,285 medical staff (physicians, residents, nurses). The review indicates that merely beginning medical studies is a risk factor for stress, and that medical professionals, who are vulnerable to extreme work stress, say that they do not receive enough support from their co-workers. They are also often notably impulsive, introverted, neurotic and perfectionist, with low emotional intelligence and agreeableness, as well as low and external locus of control. Additionally, from longitudinal studies we have been able to identify psychological factors underpinning admission to a medical university that may be useful for predicting future stress in medical career. The results of this study may be taken into account when organizing psychological intervention programs targeted at educating future medical professionals. It seems that early identification of people at risk could reduce the impact of stress related to medical career and enhance the somatic and mental health of medical professionals.

ABSTRACT This article proposes a partnership of state medical boards with medical schools to supplement professionalism and ethics education for medical students, residents, physicians and faculty members of medical institutions. The importance of professionalism has been recognized by several studies, but a specific method of teaching and developing professionalism has yet to emerge. Studies suggest that there is an association between a lack of professionalism in medical school and future disciplinary actions by medical boards. However, there has been little collaboration between these institutions in addressing unprofessional behaviors. One collaborative concept that holds promise, however, is the idea of inviting medical students to attend physician disciplinary hearings. Students and physicians alike report that watching a hearing can significantly impact attitudes about professionalism as a part of medical practice. While formal research is scarce, the positive response of individual students who experience disciplinary hearings firsthand suggests that further pilot studies may be useful. Presented in this paper are the perspectives of three individuals — a medical student, a faculty member and a medical board chair — who discuss the impact and potential of attending disciplinary hearings in developing professionalism and ethics. Also included is a review of the current literature.

BACKGROUND: Successful shared decision making (SDM) in clinical practice requires that future clinicians learn to appreciate the value of patient participation as early as in their medical training. Narratives, such as patient testimonials, have been successfully used to support patients’ decision-making process. Previous research suggests that narratives may also be used for increasing clinicians’ empathy and responsiveness in medical consultations. However, so far, no studies have investigated the benefits of narratives for conveying the relevance of SDM to medical students.METHODS: In this randomized controlled experiment, N = 167 medical students were put into a scenario where they prepared for medical consultation with a patient having Parkinson disease. After receiving general information, participants read either a narrative patient testimonial or a fact-based information text. We measured their perceptions of SDM, their control preferences (i.e., their priorities as to who should make the decision), and the time they intended to spend for the consultation.RESULTS: Participants in the narrative patient testimonial condition referred more strongly to the patient as the one who should make decisions than participants who read the information text. Participants who read the patient narrative also considered SDM in situations with more than one treatment option to be more important than participants in the information text condition. There were no group differences regarding their control preferences. Participants who read the patient testimonial indicated that they would schedule more time for the consultation.CONCLUSIONS: These findings show that narratives can potentially be useful for imparting the relevance of SDM and patient-centered values to medical students. We discuss possible causes of this effect and implications for training and future research.
