Serious games are slowly becoming a part of educational systems and corporate training facilities in lots of fields such as industry, health, management, etc. Despite this, the academic knowledge on these artefacts is still limited. The research reported in this paper examined emotional implications of serious games on the user experience. This correlational research observed the relationships between factors of serious gaming and emotions. Fifty students took part in the study. The participants used a serious game on the security of an Information System and answered a structured questionnaire. The data was analysed by Spearman’s correlation. The results show that the quality components of the multimedia system and the quality of the content of the game are correlated with emotions, satisfaction and intention to use. Moreover, they show that emotions are correlated with satisfaction, learning and success of the serious game. Satisfaction and learning play a key role in these programs. If serious game training is to have some efficiency, a deeper understanding of the factors that lead to the success of these applications is required. These factors are all levers of control that affect the perception and emotions of the user. Understanding these mechanisms could eventually lead to more effective serious games.

The article presents the results of the evaluation of the relationship between the way of shaping public space related to ensuring sustainable mobility in the city and the experiences of users influencing the perceptible quality of life. The assessment was carried out for one of the medium-sized cities, which was included in the list of cities threatened with exclusion. The subject of the evaluation was the city multimodal centreorganised around the railway station in Nysa. The aim of the research was to identify a selected, small group of key challenges and recommendations aimed at improving user experience in using a multimodal centre in the city. The article highlights the role of service infrastructure (stops, stations, transfer centres) in the ecosystem of sustainable urban mobility. Each element of this ecosystem (designed in accordance with the idea of universal design) can have a significant impact on the improvement of the perceptible (declared) quality of life in the city, if the applied solutions positively influence the user’s experience (including the sense of comfort and care). The authors focused on the current state of play in order to identify the key areas of intervention needed to improve the user experience in using the multimodal centre in a small and medium sized city. Attention was paid not only to the aspect of infrastructure accessibility, but also to the relations between urban, architectural and engineering solutions in the context of their impact on the assessment of the multimodal centre in terms of its usefulness in three dimensions: functional, rational and perceptible. The summary outlines the process of achieving from the basic solution standard to interoperability. This knowledge will allow better decision making in the planning of user-oriented projects in the city. This may be of particular importance when the conscious objective of the action is to achieve the level of interoperability expected by users of facilities such as, inter alia, a multimodal centre, which is one element of an urban public space with a significant impact on the quality of life of the citizen. Los juegos serios y la realidad aumentada se han combinado para lograr potencializar el interés que despiertan en sus jugadores y poder alcanzar su objetivo educativo, publicitario o de difusión, en los últimos años se han desarrollado juegos serios que haciendo uso de la realidad aumentada enriquecen la experiencia de los jugadores al visitar un museo o sitios históricos, despertando el interés por la cultura y el patrimonio, brindando la oportunidad de que el jugador sean parte de la historia. En ese artículo se presentan inicialmente algunos juegos serios que han empleado la realidad aumentada para incrementar la experiencia del usuario, y luego se expone la experiencia de desarrollo de un juego serio que usa la realidad aumentada como un medio para propender la apropiación del patrimonio. The Serious gaming and the augmented reality have combined to achieve wake the interest in their players and reach its educational, advertising or dissemination goals. In recent years have developed serious gaming that making used of augmented reality for enrich the experience of players when visiting a museum or historical sites, increasing interest in culture and heritage by allowing that player be part of the story. In this article we present initially some serious games that have used augmented reality to increase the user experience, and then expose the experience of developing a serious game that uses augmented reality as a means to promote the appropriation of heritage.

BACKGROUND Serious games for medical education have seen a resurgence in recent years, partly due to the growth of the video game industry and the ability of such games to support learning achievements. However, there is little consensus on what the serious and game components in a serious game are composed of. As a result, electronic learning (e-learning) and medical simulation modules are sometimes mislabeled as serious games. We hypothesize that one of the main reasons is the difficulty for a medical educator to systematically and accurately evaluate key aspects of serious games. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify markers that can evaluate serious games and distinguish between serious games, entertainment games, and e-learning. METHODS Jabareen’s eight-phase framework-building procedure was used to identify the core markers of a serious game. The procedure was modified slightly to elicit “diagnostic criteria” as opposed to its original purpose of a conceptual framework. Following the identification of purported markers, the newly developed markers were tested on a series of freely available health care serious games—Dr. Game Surgeon Trouble, Staying Alive, and Touch Surgery—and the results were compared to the published test validity for each game. RESULTS Diagnostic criteria for serious games were created, comprising the clusters of User Experience (UX), Play, and Learning. Each cluster was formed from six base markers, a minimum of four of which were required for a cluster to be considered present. These criteria were tested on the three games, and Dr. Game Surgeon Trouble and Staying Alive fit the criteria to be considered a serious game. Touch Surgery did not meet the criteria, but fit the definition of an e-learning module. CONCLUSIONS The diagnostic criteria appear to accurately distinguish between serious games and mediums commonly misidentified as serious games, such as e-learning modules. However, the diagnostic criteria do not determine if a serious game will be efficacious; they only determine if it is a serious game. Future research should include a much larger sample of games designed specifically for health care purposes.

Validation of serious games tends to focus on evaluating their design as a whole. While this helps to assess whether a particular combination of game mechanics is successful, it provides little insight into how individual mechanics contribute or detract from a serious game's purpose or a player's game experience. This study analyses the effect of game mechanics commonly used in casual games for engagement, measured as a combination of player behaviour and reported game experience. Secondly, it examines the role of a serious game's purpose on those same measures. An experimental study was conducted with 204 participants playing several versions of a serious game to explore these points. The results show that adding additional game mechanics to a core gameplay loop did not lead to participants playing more or longer, nor did it improve their game experience. Players who were aware of the game's purpose, however, perceived the game as more beneficial, scored their game experience higher, and progressed further. The results show that game mechanics on their own do not necessarily improve engagement, while the effect of perceived value deserves further study.

Abstract Environmental factors determine several features of society, but are becoming increasingly relevant in the entrepreneurship process. In recent years, entrepreneurship has been expanding worldwide and implies an exponential role of the environment. Accordingly, research into this phenomenon has also increased: contributions have rocketed, including increasingly complex and sophisticated analytical frameworks and empirical studies. This research aims to offer, through a bibliometric analysis, a comprehensive picture of research into entrepreneurial ecosystems using the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor database published in Web of Science journals during the period 2004–2016. A bibliometric analysis allows us to identify both the leading authors and journals that contribute to the progress made by the literature on entrepreneurial ecosystems. We expect our analysis to be useful to both junior and experienced scholars. The results show that the entrepreneurial ecosystems literature has a relatively high impact, as well as a high demand of related journals (an indicator about the quality of studies).

The entertaining elements implemented in a serious game are key factors in determining whether a player will be engaged in a play-learn process and able to achieve the desired learning outcomes. Thus, optimization of subjective playing experience is a crucial part of a game design process. Flow theory can be adopted for measuring user experience and analyzing the quality of serious game designs. In addition, flow seems to have a positive influence on performance enhancement, learning and engagement. The focus of this review is especially on examining the meaning of flow in the context of serious games as well as exploring the relationship between flow and learning, factors that influence occurrence of flow and how flow is operationalized. The review revealed that there are mainly conceptual considerations about flow in serious games, but no robust empirical evidence about the meaning of flow. This is in line with other studies. We argue that research on flow should focus on the specific aspects related to the very nature of serious games that combine enjoyment and learning. Furthermore, new methods to measure flow and analyse the data need to be developed and studied.

This chapter introduces a framework for the design of serious games for learning, called the design, play, and experience framework. The author argues that the great potential of serious games will not be realized without a formal design approach. To that end, the author presents and thoroughly explains the design, play, and experience framework which provides a formal approach to designing the learning, storytelling, game play, user experience, and technology components of a serious game. The author concludes by detailing how the framework provides a common language to discuss serious game design, a methodology to analyze a design, and a process to design a serious game for learning.

In this chapter we will analyze the potential derived from neuro-linguistic programming for the purpose of designing serious games and adaptive educational systems based on the user. First, the term neuro-linguistic programming will be introduced as well as the endless uses acquired through powerful techniques which have been applied in learning activities with great success inside the class. Next we will explain how we can model the neuro-linguistic programming patterns into learning scenarios of a serious game as well as the ability to work depending on the learning profile of every individual student. Lastly, we provide examples for the use of UML language inside the modeling of the techniques of neuro-linguistic programming, for the design and the implementation of a serious game.

Interactive simulation is one of the most prominent methods used to train and measure learning outcomes across multiple disciplines. Despite the ubiquity of simulation-based training in a variety of domains including nursing, serious games, military operations, etc., there is a paucity of research on how simulation experience is defined and how individual differences impact user experience. Towards this end, this paper provides a critical review of the existing literature. We describe how we can leverage existing findings and emergent themes to better understand and define simulation experience, and we outline areas for further investigation of the role of individual differences in user experience to enhance not only training outcomes, but also perception of simulation.

The concept and methods of user experience (UX) are gaining momentum in the game industry. Designers and educational practitioners aim to provide rich and effective user experience through serious educational games. Nevertheless several phenomena that delineate the complex issue of UX in serious gaming remain unexplored. This empirical study sheds light on temporality of UX and attractiveness of serious games. More specifically it explores a) how pragmatic and hedonic UX quality affects attractiveness in a serious game and b) investigates differences between anticipated and episodic UX so as to capture how the UX develops over time. Key findings are presented and discussed.
