Many creative teaching strategies have been developed in recent years in nursing and other fields to promote active learning. These strategies foster development of problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills, and they encourage students to work collaboratively with peers. However, in nurse educators’ rush to embrace active learning, lecture has been viewed negatively by some faculty. Rather than positioning active learning against lecture, another approach is to integrate active learning within lecture, gaining the benefits of both methods. An integrated approach also takes into consideration the situation of teaching large groups of students. This article examines benefits of an integrated approach to teaching and presents strategies for active learning intended for use with lecture.

This study is aimed to identify the level of generic skills among final year university students in preparation towards Industrial Revolution 4.0. A total of 89 final year students from the Counseling Program had participated in this study. Data were collected using a questionnaire adapted from the generic skills questionnaire developed by SCANS, Mohamad Sattar et al., Kamaruddin , Soft Skills (KPTM) and the Malaysian Quality Framework (MQA) . Among the variables studied are the skills of communication, critical thinking and problem solving, teamwork, continuous learning and information management, moral and ethics, flexibility, and self-confidence. Results of the study show that the level of generic skills of these final year students is good. The final year students also exhibited high generic skills particularly for the self-confident, teamwork, and moral and ethics constructs. However, the critical thinking and problem solving construct showed opposite results, indicating that there is a negative relationship between generic skills and achievement (CGPA). Apart from that, the results also showed that there is a significant difference between generic skills and gender, but there is no significant difference with achievement. Communication, critical thinking and problem solving, continuous learning and information management, and flexibility skills emerged as the most important factors for effective learning in the four contexts under consideration. Finally, this paper ended with suggestions of further initiatives to be taken to improve the generic skills of university students in order to meet the aspirations of the National Higher Education Development Plan and Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Feedback from employers, internship supervisors, and graduate schools tells us that we are doing a good job of teaching students academically/technically, but our graduates require greater training in communications, critical thinking/problem solving, and leadership/management. Because of their long-term importance to our graduates, we call these “career skills.” To address this issue a task force was established, and over a 2-year period, this group defined the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences [CALS (University of Arizona, Tucson)] Students Career Skills Competencies and vetted them through college faculty and more than 50 companies. We divided the CALS Student Career Skills Competencies into three categories: 1) communication skills, 2) critical thinking/problem solving skills, and 3) leadership/management skills. We are currently asking each degree-granting unit in the college how they do, or will, incorporate these competencies into their curricula, with the idea of incorporating the competencies into existing courses first, to avoid increasing the number of required credit hours for graduation and time to degree. Our goal is that by graduation, each student should have had multiple opportunities to hone each of these competencies.
