Many creative teaching strategies have been developed in recent years in nursing and other fields to promote active learning. These strategies foster development of problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills, and they encourage students to work collaboratively with peers. However, in nurse educators’ rush to embrace active learning, lecture has been viewed negatively by some faculty. Rather than positioning active learning against lecture, another approach is to integrate active learning within lecture, gaining the benefits of both methods. An integrated approach also takes into consideration the situation of teaching large groups of students. This article examines benefits of an integrated approach to teaching and presents strategies for active learning intended for use with lecture.

The study is a descriptive survey study that aims to see the level of soft skills among Islamic Studies students’ courses. A total of 346 samples from a population of 955 students in Bachelor courses of Islamic Studies from a public university participated in the study. Seven attributes of soft skills (soft skills) for university students as outlined by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) which include communication skills, leadership, teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving, lifelong learning, entrepreneurship and professional skills moral ethics were adopted. Data for this study were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 17.0. Min analysis shows that students master the six constituents of soft skills at a high level unless entrepreneurial skills at moderate level. The highest skill mastered was teamwork skills, followed by learning skills and information management skills, leadership skills, critical thinking skills and problem solving, communication skills and moral and professional ethics. Entrepreneurial skills which was mastered the least need to be improved to encourage Islamic studies graduate to join entrepreneurship. The study recommends that the students to pursue other professional fields without forgetting the noble role to preach the message of Islam in any career endeavor. Abstrak Kajian ini merupakan kajian tinjauan secara deskriptif bertujuan untuk melihat tahap penguasaan kemahiran insaniah pelajar kursus Pengajian Islam. Seramai 346 sampel daripada 955 orang populasi pelajar Ijazah Sarjana Muda Kursus Pengajian Islam daripada sebuah universiti awam tempatan terlibat dalam kajian. Tujuh attribut kemahiran insaniah (softskill) untuk pelajar IPT seperti yang digariskan oleh Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi Malaysia (KPTM) merangkumi kemahiran komunikasi, kepimpinan, kerja berpasukan, berfikir kritis dan penyelesaian masalah, pembelajaran sepanjang hayat, keusahawanan dan kemahiran etika moral profesional (KPT 2006) digunapakai. Data kajian ini telah diperoleh melalui soal selidik dan dianalisis menggunakan prisian SPSS versi 17.0. Analisis min menunjukkan pelajar menguasai enam juzuk kemahiran insaniah pada tahap tinggi kecuali kemahiran keusahawanan pada tahap sederhana tinggi. Kemahiran yang paling tinggi dikuasai ialah kemahiran kerja berpasukan diikuti kemahiran pembelajaran berterusan dan pengurusan maklumat, kemahiran kemahiran kepimpinan, kemahiran pemikiran kritis dan penyelesaian masalah, kemahiran komunikasi dan kemahiran etika moral dan profesional. Kemahiran keusahawanan yang paling rendah dikuasai perlu dipertingkatkan sebagai usaha menggalakkan graduan pengajian Islam menceburi bidang keusahawanan. Kajian mencadangkan pelajar Pengajian Islam menceburi bidang-bidang profesional yang lainnya tanpa melupakan peranan mulia sebagai penyebar mesej keislaman dan pendakwah dalam apa jua karier yang diceburi.

A challenging new engineering design course is developed as part of the Engineering Design and Practice Sequence in the Civil Engineering program. This course engages students in a cyclical design process where they plan, build, test, and evaluate a model-scale tidal current turbine. They then use their own observations and analysis to iteratively inform, improve and re-test their design.The two objectives of this paper are to provide a description of the development and structure of this design course, and to assess student learning. The Final Design Reports were externally evaluated using the Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education rubrics. Students also completed a standardized test called the Collegiate Learning Assessment as an objective evaluation of longitudinal learning gains. The Civil Engineering students demonstrated significant improvement in critical thinking, problem solving, and written communication skills.

One critical measurement of success in workplaces is the abilities of graduates in applying the knowledge, skills and values into the needs of their job. This study was conducted to seek the gap of soft skills of Tra Vinh  University students compared to labour-market standard. The quantitative data was collected at School of Economics and Law with a sample of 362 students and 300 graduates to measure their soft skills. Generally, both students and graduates are still unconfident of their own soft skills, this affacts their self-affirmation. Moreover, the importance of soft skills is also acknowledged, namely critical thinking, problem-solving,  selflearning, work-management skills and teamwork as well as communication skills which need to beprioritized equipped for any kinds of workplaces. Nonetheless, the aforementioned skill gap is significantly remarkable, especially regarding the communication skills. Based on these analyzes, some solutions are proposed to the work recruitment, schools and graduates to lessen the skill gap and meet the demands of labour markets.

Recent reform efforts that are based on the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM 1989) call for an increase in problem solving as part of the mathematics curriculum for students at all levels. Teachers can use problemsolving activities for multiple purposes, such as developing critical-thinking skills, data-organization skills, communication skills, and a risk-taking attitude, as well as making connections among mathematical topics. Regardless of the curriculum goal, teachers face many challenges in finding suitable activities and then assessing the work that students do on these activities. Neither task is easy.

This article discusses the benefits of theatrical texts in language courses for beginners. These original, fun, and yet challenging materials help learners develop linguistic and intercultural competencies and transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and cooperation. Specifically, this article examines the use of Jean Tardieu’s (2000/1955) short comedy Finissez vos phrases! in a French course for beginners at university level. The particularities of this play are its brevity and the incompleteness of its dialogues. I argue that studying Tardieu’s (2000/1955) comedy allows learners to develop their communication skills by reading the whole play, watching a performance of the play, completing the dialogues, and performing their new version in front of the class. Moreover, Finissez vos phrases! familiarises learners with French conversational conventions and encourages them to think about the effectiveness of language. It also enhances their cooperative skills, lets them express their creativity and, ultimately, offers them a playful approach to learning French.
