AbstractIntegrated renovation projects are important for marine ecological environment protection. Three-dimensional hydrodynamics and water quality models are developed for the Maowei Sea to assess the hydrodynamic environment base on the MIKE3 software with high resolution meshes. The results showed that the flow velocity changed minimally after the project, decreasing by approximately 0.12 m/s in the east of the Maowei Sea area and increasing by approximately 0.01 m/s in the northeast of the Shajing Port. The decrease in tidal prism (~ 2.66 × 106 m3) was attributed to land reclamation, and accounted for just 0.86% of the pre-project level. The water exchange half-life increased by approximately 1 day, implying a slightly reduced water exchange capacity. Siltation occurred mainly in the reclamation and dredging areas, amounting to back-silting of approximately 2 cm/year. Reclamation project is the main factor causing the decrease of tidal volume and weakening the hydrodynamics in Maowei Sea. Adaptive management is necessary for such a comprehensive regulation project. According to the result, we suggest that reclamation works should strictly prohibit and dredging schemes should optimize in the subsequent regulation works.

Between 1950 and 1956, one fifth of the Italian landscape was profoundly reshaped. According to the first ten-year plan issued by the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, 51 aqueducts and around 3,000 km of roads would provide the necessary infrastructure to rehouse millions of farmers, while 139 new settlements and 46,450 isolated houses would result from the new subdivision of land. Besides the national funds, newly established local authorities were entrusted with the handling of all technical aspects concerning land reclamation and resettlement. Far from being the mere result of political agreements, such an impressive and multi-faceted reform process stood at the intersection of cultural debates, national ambitions and foreign ascendancies that sought substantial alternatives to modernization and urbanization. This paper highlights an off-radar case study, with the aim of presenting and understanding some of the aspects featuring in the Italian discourse on rural planning. It deals with the intervention of the Bradano Valley Land Reclamation Authority and its main consultant, Nallo Mazzocchi Alemanni, and frames their efforts in the larger and multifaceted postwar Lucanian experience. Inscribed in the contemporary debate on regionalism and planning, the technical stance of Mazzocchi Alemanni would provide the foundation upon which to unfold the interweaving of contradictory ideologies deployed by intellectuals and activists seeking to uplift the Italian Mezzogiorno.

A pilot test was carried out at a land reclamation project site to study the effect of vertical drains on the rate of consolidation of a marine clay deposit in Singapore. Theoretical and numerical analyses were conducted to interpret the field measurements of pore pressure and settlement, and consolidation parameters were back-calculated. The back-calculated preconsolidation pressure is similar to that obtained from the laboratory consolidation test on undisturbed samples, but the field-deduced compression index is generally larger than that measured in the laboratory. The coefficient of consolidation back-calculated from the settlement measurement is larger than that from the pore-pressure measurement. The coefficient of consolidation for horizontal flow obtained from the Rowe cell test, which is comparable to that back-calculated from the field settlement measurement, is recommended for the preliminary design of vertical drains without the need of considering the smear effect.Key words: clays, consolidation, ground improvement, numerical modelling and analysis, permeability, vertical drains.

This paper highlights some practical considerations of soil structure interactions in the design of the breakwater for a land reclamation project at Da Ya Bay, Southern China sea, through three-dimensional finite element analysis. A pile-breakwater-foundation system is evaluated during its construction and after construction has been completed. The maximum deflections and moments of the piles take place in the soft marine clay underneath the breakwater. The deformation of the soft soil imposes great impact on the slender pile. Based on the study, it is considered inadequate to solely increase the density and stiffness of the piles, as it will not effectively reduce the deformation of the foundation as well as the moment of the pile. On the contrary, the increased stiffness results in significant increase of the stresses in the pile. Consequently, the deformation of pile should be evaluated in terms of interactions between soil and pile. Improvement of the soft marine clay is also of great importance.

In order to research the effect of land reclamation on landscape ecological quality(LEQ) in mining area, taking Jiawang mining area in Xuzhou as an example, LEQ and its changes before and after reclamation were evaluated with an indices system which was constructed form stability and interference level of landscape ecosystem based on RS, GIS and landscape ecology. The weight was assigned for each index by analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy technology. The results showed that land use of the study area dramatically changed, manifesting by farmland continuous decreases and the built-up areas rapid increases, secondly, woodland decreases after increasing, grassland and water slight increases, which were in an unbalanced state overall. The landscape ecological situation of the study area had a better trend from 2001 to 2010, implying that land reclamation project had played a certain improvement on the regional ecological environment in mining area. It is believed that this work may provide scientific reference for land reclamation and landscape restoration of coal mining area.

The morphodynamic responses of tidal networks to anthropogenic reclamation and de-reclamation projects are investigated through a three-stage numerical simulation. In the first stage, the natural development of tidal networks is modelled in an open coast without any anthropogenic interventions. At the beginning of the second stage, parts of the computational domain are enclosed by sea dikes, which represents the implementation of the reclamation project. These sea dikes are removed or opened in the third stage to simulate the recovery of the tidal networks after de-reclamation. Each stage was set to last 100 years. The model results indicate that land reclamation can lead to three effects on tidal network morphology: (i) completely terminating the development of channels inside the projected area, (ii) hindering the development of the channel network in front of the dikes, and (iii) turning the channel direction near the corners of the dikes. When removing all the sea dikes, the previously reclaimed areas are quickly occupied by tidal networks. However, the morphology cannot be fully restored to its original natural state, although the entire reclaimed areas are returned. The effects of opening breaches are relatively slow, and tree-like network structures are formed inside the reclaimed areas.

Abstract The American Christian Palestine Committee believed that Palestine, and not Europe or any other location, should memorialize the European Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Founded in 1946, the ACPC partnered with the Jewish National Fund to establish the Children’s Memorial Forest, a memorial to the more than 1 million Jewish children who perished in the Nazi genocide. Its fundraising campaign sought to plant saplings in the Ein Hashofet region, constituting an early form of Holocaust education among American Sunday school children. It solicited theologically liberal, or mainline, American Protestants’ participation in a land reclamation project aimed at advancing Jewish statehood.

As a result of the increasing industrial, municipal and agricultural water demand in the Nakdong River Basin, the available amount of fresh river water to repulse salinity intrusion into the lower reaches of the river rapidly decreases during the dry season. Hence the continuity of fresh water supply to the city of Busan, is endangered. The most appropriate solution, both technically and economically is a barrage and enclosure dam in the river estuary. A study was carried out on the interaction between the barrage construction and the estuary and river environment. This study comprised ecological, water quality and morphological aspects. The results were incorporated into the technical design and proposed management of the barrage. This approach resulted in a solution, where the primary objective of the barrage, salinity repulsion, was achieved with a minimised impact on the environment.
