This article studies the paratexts of the translations of Don Quijote into English by John Stevens and John Phillips, and of the translations of Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias by John Phillips and Crónica del Perú by John Stevens. It draws on the work of Gérard Genette, who discussed the use of paratexts in literary studies, and applies it to the translations covered here in order to discuss the concepts of "voice" and "translatorial identity", as used by translation scholars. After introducing the relevance of paratexts in Translation Studies research, the article studies the titles, the dedications and the prefaces of the four translations, and argues that these texts showed that the two translators had different aims in mind: while John PhillipsÕs agenda was first and foremost ideological, John Stevens was particularly interested in producing faithful renditions of the original works.

Abstract Quantifying style, or stylometry, has always been one of the oldest traditions in Western literary studies. It seems, however, that such a well-explored and long-standing scientific methodology has been rarely applied to translations, as opposed to original literary texts. The present paper, which focuses on the stylistic use of phraseology in two contemporary Chinese versions of Cervantes’ Don Quijote, shall endeavour to address the two current problems in corpus-based translation stylistics, i.e., the lack of debate on the question of semantically-rich linguistic units in quantifying style of translations, and the need for testing the use of methods and techniques adapted from corpus statistics in detecting stylistic traits in translations. It is hoped that this study, which aims at expanding the current methodological framework for translation stylistics, will help in the development of this growing area of research in Translation Studies.

The question of image in literary studies and in recent years in Translation Studies is one of the most problematic innature. In the present study an attempt was made to define the nature of translating linguistic constructions – evokingimages in the mind of reader – in English novels and their rendered versions in Persian translations. In this studyseven types of images (visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, kinesthetic and organic) in two English novelsand their rendered versions in Persian were analyzed based on two theoretical frameworks, the first one is Jiang’sImage-Based Model to Literary Translation (2008) by which the nature of translation of images were examined andthe other is Chesterman’s translation strategies (1997) which help to systematize translation strategies adopted bytranslators in rewriting the images in English novels. The results have shown that in most of the cases the images thatare intended by original author have been changed in the translations, and the aesthetic experience of the ST reader isdifferent from that of the TT reader.

Abstract This review is divided into three sections: 1. Jeffrey T. Zalar, Reading and Rebellion in Catholic Germany, 1770–1914; 2. Edward Baring, Converts to the Real: Catholicism and the Making of Continental Philosophy; 3. ‘Translation and Religion: Crafting Regimes of Identity’, a thematic issue of Religion edited by Hephzibah Israel and Matthias Frenz. Taken together, these works provide an overview of approaches that demonstrate the value of interdisciplinary research into religion and representation. Drawing on the disciplines of social, political, and cultural history, literary studies, book history, theology, religious studies, translation studies, and postcolonial studies, they highlight the importance of research that contextualizes the relationship between religion and representation, bringing attention to its historically overlooked aspects.

Abstract This article explores some topics at the boundary between linguistics theory and the applied linguistic foundations of the practice of translation. Section 1, The irrelevance of the avant-garde , considers the relation between such academic adventures as semiotics and poststructuralism on the one hand and the theory of language and the practice of translation on the other, and argues that radical antiscientism does not bear on the foundations of translation. Section 2, The irrelevance of the technical , looks at formal syntax and semantics in relation to the concepts of applied linguistics and shows that careful contemporary linguistics cannot underpin an applied enterprise that includes translation studies. Section 3, The substantive hase of translation , indicates (in some detail for translation and at a general level for other applied linguistic activities) the direction that the contemporary integration of various lines of linguistic research is taking vis-à-vis the needs of such applied enterprises as translation, literary studies, language planning, lexicography, and language teaching. Section 3 invokes a concept of substance as opposed to form and thus sets the scene for the concluding section 4, Pragmatics, applied studies, and scientific progress , which argues that it is necessary to take help from linguistics in order to construct the field of translation studies in such a way that practitioners can truly benefit freely from all relevant branches of knowledge, in view of the fact that chaos is an obstacle to genuine freedom.

Since its conception in France in 1877, Comparative Literature, always subject to a critique of Eurocentrism, has been in a state of perpetual crisis. In “The Old/New Question of Comparison in Literary Studies: A Post-European Perspective” (2004), Ray Chow argued for a Post-European perspective in which comparatists begin with the home culture and look outwards to the European cultures, contrary to the dominant approach of doing just otherwise. Missing in Chow’s argument is the position of translation in this post-European perspective. In the 14 years between 2004 and 2018, the grandiose claims of comparative literature have been problematized and addressed; the lay of the land, however, remains predominantly Eurocentric, as it still focuses on content disproportionately. In this paper, through a study of English translations of Khayyam’s Rubaiyat, and taking Chow’s argument further, I argue that with its commitment to transfer the form of a text as much as the content, translation studies can further help comparative literature to distance itself from Europe. To exemplify the implication of this, I suggest that a translation of Khayyam’s Rubaiyat from Farsi to English would be more faithful to the original if its translations were to focus on the poem’s form rather than the content. I argue that translating with a focus on form would foreignize Khayyam’s poetry, hence an act of resistance against cultural hegemony.

Este artículo pretende delinear una posible arqueología de las relecturas y reescrituras de la novela de Cervantes El ingenioso Hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, que los autores latinoamericanos configuraron después del fenómeno de la modernidad de las letras. Específicamente, se aborda a Germán Espinosa para analizar el caso del Caribe colombiano. Este objetivo se establece a partir del estudio de los procedimientos narrativos de apropiación y desenmascaramiento de los ejes simbólicos esenciales que ya aparecen dialogando en la obra cervantina: el ser discreto vs. el ser vulgar, y que en la novela de los autores del Caribe colombiano —Germán Espinosa en particular— se podrían definir como marcas discursivas que construyen a los personajes históricos que figuran en su novela Los cortejos del diablo (1982). Por tanto, bajo las conclusiones de la aplicación metodológica de un análisis del campo de producción artística del Caribe colombiano, se ofrecen aquí futuras líneas de investigación en el marco de los estudios culturales y literarios.Palabras claves: apropiación, Cervantes, desenmascaramiento, discreto, Quijote, vulgarAbstractThis article aims to outline a possible archeology of the re-readings and re-writings of Cervantes’ novel El ingenioso Hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, that Latin American authors shaped after the phenomenon of modernity of letters. Specifically, the article focuses on Germán Espinosa in order to analyze the case of the Colombian Caribbean. This objective is established from the study of narrative procedures of appropriation and unmasking of the essential symbolic axes that already dialogue in Cervantes’ work: being discreet vs. being vulgar. These axes in the novels of the authors of the Colombian Caribbean — German Espinosa in particular— could be defined as discursive markers that build the historical characters contained in his novel The Devil Processions (1982). Therefore, under the conclusions of the methodological application of a field analysis of artistic production of the Colombian Caribbean, future research agendas within the framework of cultural and literary studies are suggested.Keywords: appropriation, Cervantes, discreet, Quixote, unmasking, vulgar

This paper entitled "Writers and Translators: from guilt to gratitude" attempts to switch the emphasis from concept and percept on affect in translation studies. It aims at replacing the translator in all his indissociated roles — reader, critic, interpreter, translator and writer — right within the hazardous responsibility for sense and signification input. It is based on the confessions of some renowned French writers — Jean Anouilh, Gérard de Nerval and André Gide — who described the unspoken hardships, loneliness, feelings of guilt and gratitude while translating the very specially inspired giants of universal literature, respectively Shakespeare, Goethe and Rabindranath Tagore. The main idea developed here is that it is certainly more straining, overwhelming and challenging to be the translators of such fabulous masterpieces than being mere writers. For what is at stake for these translators is less equating or overpassing the linguistic means of expression in the original works than meeting the processes of human mind through the exploration of the authors' conscience. In other words, no aesthetic purpose or emotional beauty in translation can be efficiently rendered without the translators peeping into the authors' personal and secret mythology in order to find out the very principles of the creative work's genesis. Translation is also shown as an interactive author-translator's mutual appreciation, both moral and intellectual, the everlasting intellectual balance residing in a fair play between objectivity and subjectivity.

Abstract Building mostly on the seminal works of André Lefevere and Bassnett, recent work carried out in translation studies has problematized extant conceptions of translation and the distinction between various forms of creative rewritings. Similarly, individual scholars such as Katja Krebs and Laurence Raw in the field of adaptation studies have illuminated points of convergence and overlap between translation and adaptation. This article espouses and extends existing studies by explicating the redundancy of the borders constructed between translation and adaptation within the broader framework of Nigerian theatre and performance. Informed by a transdisciplinary approach adapted from multimodal social semiotics and literary studies, the author engages in analysis and close-readings of the play text and stage performance of Femi Osofisan’s Women of Owu (2004/2006) to investigate how translation transcends simple interlingual practice to encompass adaptations of the spatial, temporal and embodied aspects of societies and cultures.
