scholarly journals Embedded System Based Emergency Evacuation System

The complex nature of the internal environment of public buildings make us to think about how to protect people in the break-out of fire and quickly reach the safe area. With the help of Arduino and other components such as fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, safety evacuation symbols in buildings, the migration of the people can be dynamically monitored and controlled. Using Arduino, an intelligent dynamic evacuation path solving model for emergency evacuation system was built for large public buildings. When an emergency situation occurs, the system can help guide people to evacuate from building and reach the safe exit quickly, so as to reduce casualties and economic losses.

The Grand Bazaar is a historical trade centre more than 500 years in the historical peninsula of Istanbul, Turkey. It consists of almost 3,600 small shops from different sectors (such as jewellery, carpet, leather, souvenir, finance, restaurant, café, confection etc.), two Bedesten, 64 street and 16 Han (inn) buildings. The Bazaar has 21 main gates that open to different streets and have different relation with outside. More than 25000 staff work in the shops and 300-500 thousand users come to Bazaar daily depending on the season and day. The pedestrian density is changeable, depending on the place of the inner street and the type of the sector. The historical disaster records (earthquake, dated 1766 and 1894, the grand bazaar fire, dated 1954) show that there was evacuation vulnerability. The main gates (exit doors) and exit route need some rehabilitation for safety evacuation during any disaster. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Grand Bazaar’s emergency evacuation vulnerability. The evacuation vulnerability factors question the width, length and natural illumination of the evacuation route, maintenance of the roof, presence of hazardous materials, door specifications as size, material, opening direction, maintenance and difference in elevation on the route and exit area such as staircase and thresholds.

With the development of science and technology, the design of modern architecture is becoming more and more attractive. The large-scale public buildings such as shopping malls, office buildings, Research centres and education centres are increasing dramatically. In case of sudden disasters and the overloaded electricity may easily cause fire and the fire smoke, fire in large buildings spread over a wide range of areas and produces physical damages, several hazard to life and property and atmospheric pollution. This paper proposes An Intelligent IOT based People Evacuation Guidance Model for Fire Hazard to guide the people by constructing the evacuation path dynamically based on the real time situation to reach the safety exit quickly in large public buildings using their Personal Digital Assistant like mobile phone, tabs etc. Whenever a fire breaks out, IOT module alerts the people to find the safety exit. Thus, the proposed system minimizes danger and economic losses by guiding the optimized evacuation path. The performance of the proposed system will be compared with the existing system and the result of improvement will be shown.

Earthquake is a natural disaster that harms people and affects their lives deeply, causing social and economic losses. In this respect, earthquakes lead to the emergence of historical facts in terms of their consequences. As far as we can see from the Ottoman archive documents, except the damage to the buildings due to earthquakes; There were deaths in the households in the center and in the villages. As the state provides financial aid (atiyye-yi seniyye) to help the citizens as much as possible; He also sent tents and food to the homeless. In earthquakes, we see that both the inner castle and the surrounding villages, important places such as mosques, mosques, churches, telegraph houses, and public buildings and government buildings were destroyed. A physician was sent from the Capital for the treatment of the injured and the prevention of diseases in earthquakes. We also see that taxes are postponed due to the earthquake. The Ottoman Empire tried to provide all kinds of support to the people of Islam, Christianity and Jews without discrimination. Although there are many earthquakes on the island reflected in the records; We tried to write the situation reflected in the archive documents of the three major earthquakes in the years 1867-1889-1899, the first two of which caused severe destruction. The most important issue unfortunately recurring in the archive documents is economy.

Deaf or hearing loss is a condition of inability to hear something, either totally or partially. Hearing loss greatly affects the life of a person in communicating with the people around him. Deaf people will be very difficult when in a medical emergency, this is because the medical emergency situation requires fast action.

The Healthy Phone application is a mobile medical emergency call application that can help people with hearing impaired when in emergency situations. With the Healthy Phone application, the user only needs to select an icon that suits the situation encountered in touchscreen mobile device then the message will be sent to the nearest hospital.
To search for icons corresponding to emergencies, the User Centered Design (UCD) method is used. This application is very helpful for deaf people because this application does not require audio communication and user location is also sent automatically to the nearest hospital. The results were analyzed using four emergency event scenarios with a total score of 87% and an average user time of less than 0:42 sec indicating that the study was successful in designing a mobile medical emergency call application according to user requirements.

During emergencies, emotions greatly affect human behaviour. For more realistic multi-agent systems in simulations of emergency evacuations, it is important to incorporate emotions and their effects on the agents. In few words, emotional contagion is a process in which a person or group influences the emotions or behavior of another person or group through the conscious or unconscious induction of emotion states and behavioral attitudes. In this study, we simulate an emergency situation in an open square area with three exits considering Adults and Children agents with different behavior. Also, Security agents are considered in order to guide Adults and Children for finding the exits and be calm. Six levels of emotion levels are considered for each agent in different scenarios and situations. The agent-based simulated model initialize with the random scattering of agent populations and then when an alarm occurs, each agent react to the situation based on its and neighbors current circumstances. The main goal of each agent is firstly to find the exit, and then help other agents to find their ways. Numbers of exited agents along with their emotion levels and damaged agents are compared in different scenarios with different initialization in order to evaluate the achieved results of the simulated model. NetLogo 5.2 is used as the multi-agent simulation framework with R language as the developing language.

The field investigation of the human evacuation behavior of young people under time pressure in campus is conducted in Northeastern University of Shenyang. Based on the analysis of the observation of human evacuation behavior characteristics, scenarios of human evacuation in academic building under different evacuation management strategy are simulated and compared by FDS+Evac. The analysis results show that the crowd flow coefficient will be increasing under time pressure. The congestion of the crowd in academic building can be alleviated effectively on the base of batches evacuation management. The Real Safety Evacuation Time (RSET) can be reduced if the layout of exits is designed felicitously. Therefore, emergency drill such as fire drill is suggested to proceed periodically and regularly so that human can have opportunity to experience emergent and hazard surroundings to improve their ability of evacuation in emergency.

This paper concentrates on modeling the vehicle routing to develop an evacuation plan for transit-dependent residents during emergency situation. Planning of transit route in the evacuation is formulated as a vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW). An intelligent algorithm, in which genetic algorithm is embedded with simulated annealing is developed to solve the optimization model. A real evacuation network on which 19 pick-up points and 4 shelters are distributed is used to study the proposed evacuation strategy. The relevant results show the feasibility of the mathematical model as well as the efficiency of the solving algorithm.
