scholarly journals An Assessment of Gpu and Cpu based Convolutional Neural Network for Classification of White Blood Cells

White blood cell (Leukocytes) is made up of bone marrow located in the blood and lymph tissue. They are portion of the human body’s immune system, thereby helping the body system to fight against infection and other related diseases. The number of leukocytes in the blood is usually part of a complete blood cell (CBC) test, which may be used to check for conditions such as infection, inflammation, allergies, and leukemia. Automation of variance count of leukocytes offers valuable information to medical pathologist to diagnose and treat of many blood based diseases. Early characterization and classification of blood sample is a major lacuna in the medical field, giving rise to lots of challenges for pathologist to adequately predict blood based disease. Several successful efforts have been made to address the aforementioned challenges with the use of machine learning generally and Convolution Neural Network in particular. However the processor configuration which can result in real time, and accurate classification of the high dimensional pattern is imminent, and a vast number of researchers are not explicit on the system configuration used to obtain the result in their report, which is the crux of this research. In this research,12,500 augment images of blood cells was obtained from the Kaggle Repository online. The leukocytes are contained in the blood smear image and categorized into five major types of their types: Neutrophil, Eosinophil, Basophil, Lymphocyte and Monocyte. The color, geometric and texture features are used by the pathologists to differentiate the leukocytes. The Simulation was done using python programing language and python libraries including Keras, pandas, sklearn, numpy, scipy and matplot for potting of graphs of results. The simulation was done on both CPU and GPU processor to compare the performance of the processors on CNNs based classification of the data. While CPU has faster clock speed GPU has more cores. Hence the evaluation metrics used which are precision, specificity, sensitivity, training accuracy and validation accuracy revealed that GPU processor outperforms CPU in terms of the stated metrics of comparison. Therefore a high configuration processor (GPU), which handles graphics better is recommended for processing image data that involves the use of machine learning techniques

Leukemia is a type of cancer that is on white blood cell. This disease are characterized by abundance of abnormal white blood cell called lymphoblast in the bone marrow. Classification of blood cell types, calculation of the ratio of cell types and comparison with normal blood cells can be the subject of diagnosing this disease. The diagnostic process is carried out manually by hematologists through microscopic image. This method is likely to provide a subjective result and time-consuming.The application of digital image processing techniques and machine learning in the process of classifying white blood cells can provide more objective results. This research used thresholding method as segmentation and  multilayer method of back propagation perceptron with variations in the extraction of textural features, geometry, and colors. The results of segmentation testing in this study amounted to 68.70%. Whereas the classification test shows that the combination of feature extraction of GLCM features, geometry features, and color features gives the best results. This test produces an accuration value 91.43%, precision value of 50.63%, sensitivity 56.67%, F1Score 51.95%, and specitifity 94.16%.

The aerospace sector is one of the main economic drivers that strengthens our present, constitutes our future and is a source of competitiveness and innovation with great technological development capacity. In particular, the objective of manufacturers on assembly lines is to automate the entire process by using digital technologies as part of the transition toward Industry 4.0. In advanced manufacturing processes, artificial vision systems are interesting because their performance influences the liability and productivity of manufacturing processes. Therefore, developing and validating accurate, reliable and flexible vision systems in uncontrolled industrial environments is a critical issue. This research deals with the detection and classification of fasteners in a real, uncontrolled environment for an aeronautical manufacturing process, using machine learning techniques based on convolutional neural networks. Our system achieves 98.3% accuracy in a processing time of 0.8 ms per image. The results reveal that the machine learning paradigm based on a neural network in an industrial environment is capable of accurately and reliably estimating mechanical parameters to improve the performance and flexibility of advanced manufacturing processing of large parts with structural responsibility.

AbstractClassification of multispectral optical satellite data using machine learning techniques to derive land use/land cover thematic data is important for many applications. Comparing the latest algorithms, our research aims to determine the best option to classify land use/land cover with special focus on temporary inundated land in a flat area in the south of Hungary. These inundations disrupt agricultural practices and can cause large financial loss. Sentinel 2 data with a high temporal and medium spatial resolution is classified using open source implementations of a random forest, support vector machine and an artificial neural network. Each classification model is applied to the same data set and the results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively. The accuracy of the results is high for all methods and does not show large overall differences. A quantitative spatial comparison demonstrates that the neural network gives the best results, but that all models are strongly influenced by atmospheric disturbances in the image.

Data classification is one of the most commonly used applications of machine learning. The are many developed algorithms that can work in various environments and for different data distributions that perform this task with excellence. Classification algorithms, just like other machine learning algorithms have one thing in common: in order to operate on data, they must see the data. In the present world, where concerns about privacy, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), business confidentiality and security are growing bigger and bigger; this requirement to work directly on the original data might become, in some situations, a burden. In this paper, an approach to the classification of images that cannot be directly accessed during training has been made. It has been shown that one can train a deep neural network to create such a representation of the original data that i) without additional information, the original data cannot be restored, and ii) that this representation—called a masked form—can still be used for classification purposes. Moreover, it has been shown that classification of the masked data can be done using both classical and neural network-based classifiers.

Leukemia is one of the deadliest diseases in human life, it is a type of cancer that hits blood cells. The task of diagnosing Leukemia is time consuming and tedious for doctors; it is also challenging to determine the level and type of Leukemia. The diagnoses of Leukemia are achieved through identifying the changes on the White blood Cells (WBC). WBCs are divided into five types: Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils, Monocytes, and Lymphocytes. In this paper, the authors propose a Convolutional Neural Network to detect and classify normal white blood cells. The program will learn about the shape and type of normal WBC by performing the following two tasks. The first task is identifying high level features of a normal white blood cell. The second task is classifying the normal white blood cell according to its type. Using a Convolutional Neural Network CNN, the system will be able to detect normal WBCs by comparing them with the high-level features of normal WBC. This process of identifying and classifying WBC can be vital for doctors and medical staff to make a decision. The proposed network achieves an accuracy up to 96.78% with a dataset including 10,000 blood cell images.

Automating the analysis of digital microscopic images to identify the cell sub-types or the presence of illness has assumed a great importance since it aids the laborious manual process of review and diagnosis. In this paper, we have focused on the analysis of white blood cells. They are the body’s main defence against infections and diseases and, therefore, their reliable classification is very important. Current systems for leukocyte analysis are mainly dedicated to: counting, sub-types classification, disease detection or classification. Although these tasks seem very different, they share many steps in the analysis process, especially those dedicated to the detection of cells in blood smears. A very accurate detection step gives accurate results in the classification of white blood cells. Conversely, when detection is not accurate, it can adversely affect classification performance. However, it is very common in real-world applications that work on inaccurate or non-accurate regions. Many problems can affect detection results. They can be related to the quality of the blood smear images, e.g., colour and lighting conditions, absence of standards, or even density and presence of overlapping cells. To this end, we performed an in-depth investigation of the above scenario, simulating the regions produced by detection-based systems. We exploit various image descriptors combined with different classifiers, including CNNs, in order to evaluate which is the most suitable in such a scenario, when performing two different tasks: Classification of WBC subtypes and Leukaemia detection. Experimental results have shown that Convolutional Neural Networks are very robust in such a scenario, outperforming common machine learning techniques combined with hand-crafted descriptors. However, when exploiting appropriate images for model training, even simpler approaches can lead to accurate results in both tasks.

Nucleus segmentation is one of important steps in the automatic white blood cell differential counting. In this paper, we proposed a technique to segment images of the nucleus. We analyze a set of white-blood-cell-nucleus-based features using color fuzzy texture spectrum (Base 5). We applied artificial neural network for classification. We compared the results with moment based features. The classification performances are evaluated by class wise classification rates. The results show that the features using nucleus alone could be utilized to achieve a classification rate of 99.05% on the test sets.
