Kaizen is a part of Lean Manufacturing that focuses on the concept of continuous improvement to reduce waste. For implementing Kaizen on the factory floor, comprehensive and efficient tools for data acquisition, process measurement and analysis are required. The MTConnect open specification provides for cost-effective data acquisition on the manufacturing floor for machine tools and related devices. This paper will look at a Kaizen implementation on the shop floor level for continuous improvement using real-time MTConnect data. The Kaizen transformation of machine data into production knowledge was performed in order to understand energy consumption, asset operation and process performance. The paper takes a detailed examination of the machine tool energy management.

Competitive advantage is a substantial  strategic objective for organizations. It requires high levels in the quality of products and services provided to customers, continuous improvement of costing , care for creativity and innovative employees, and speed unique to the marketing and financial engineering, and business re-engineering processes. The situation in this area, requires actors to attract and develop human resources, including help in proper implementation of the strategic tasks that targeted by those institutions. According to the opinions and viewpoints of management scholars, the competitive advantage resource is the most important issue for organizations in the third millennium, which can be achieved through the construction of organizational knowledge, human capital, and their development to serve in transforming them into the learning and expert organizations, to know how to accelerate to be more efficient and flexible in the market.

Tatung Electric Indonesia is a peripatetic company in manufacturing industry assembling of electro motor. So that product yielded by PT. Tatung Electric Indonesia can continue to fulfill requirement of customer, company try to improve the quality of its product by minimizing defect which during the time still happened. This defect arising caused by the existence of variation at yielded product and also that happened in the process. Six Sigma represent control technique or method to reach storey or level quality of 3.4 DPMO ( Defects Per Million Opportunities), which applied by Motorola company since year 1986. Applying strategy to be used is Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC). This Method represent recuring step and form a make-up of quality cycle. Calculations show the company is 3.641 sigma level with DPMO 15,830. The sigma levels are on the average level of sigma industries in Indonesia (3-4 sigma). Increased levels of sigma would happen if the company immediately continuous improvement over time. Conclusion of the application of Six Sigma is the DMAIC method in the assembly process of electro motors can analyze and reduce disability that occurs that will increase the quality of products.

Continuous improvement is a key element for the competitiveness of companies seeking to increase the quality of a process, product, or service. This project aims to apply continuous improvement in a locomotive service and maintenance process, which works for the railway industry in the country. Low efficiency and productivity were identified in the remanufacturing of axles and wheels in the Combos area, where the improvement project was carried out. The Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) methodology was used through the application of lean manufacturing tools to eliminate or reduce activities that do not add value. As a result, reduced transport times, standardization of operations, and improved staff safety were achieved. The above together significantly impacted the time cycle of processes, managing to increase efficiency by 7.52%.

Subject. This article deals with the tools of lean manufacturing concept that seek to eliminate losses or minimize them as much as possible while improving the quality of products provided. Objectives. The article aims to examine the theoretical and methodological aspects of the lean concept, and describe the foreign experience of using lean technologies. Methods. For the study, I used the methods of analysis, retrospection, comparison, and generalization. To present the study results, I used the tabular method. Results. The article defines the notion of Loss (Muda) and types of losses specified in dedicated sources. It describes the techniques that help companies eliminate losses and maximize market orientation through their staff members’ participation. The article defines the content and discusses the implications of implementing various key tools of the lean concept. Conclusions. Lean technologies can be implemented both individually and in combination with one another. When combined, the technologies can help both optimize labor and tangible costs, and meet the needs of customers. The use of a wide range of lean concepts can contribute to solving socioeconomic challenges faced by an individual economic entity and the entire country.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine and evaluate various Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) models proposed by various researchers, which have been implemented in manufacturing organizations. Design/methodology/approach The present study has followed three major steps in methodology. In the first step, pooling of various research articles has been done, followed by development of the primary results. At the final step, analysis and development of the LSS model have been performed. Findings This paper evaluated and examined various models of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and LSS and developed an advanced LSS model that can be deployed in any manufacturing organization with the purpose of scrap reduction. Originality/value The findings of this study will assist shop floor managers to implement an LSS model in their organizations, which can effectively reduce the waste and enhance the overall productivity and quality of the manufactured products.

As a modern way of thinking lean methodology uses tools that are directed towards the continuous improvement of the functioning of the system with continuous perfection. Lean production (LP) means less work in the workplace, less manufacturing space, less investment, less time and fewer tools and supplies. The methodology is designed so that it is planned and managed in stages, necessary for the realization of the objectives defined production system. Lean companies are primarily focused on growth, increase profitability and customer value, but also increase productivity, improve the quality of products and processes, as well as the delivery systems are also important elements for improving business efficiency. This paper will present the methodology of implementation of lean concepts for improving productivity in manufacturing companies.

Currently, more and more challenges of modern industrial enterprises require an increase in the reliability of the information on the quality of products. This becomes possible when using digital technologies to assess the quality of products. The cited publication discusses the technology for recognizing defects in the surface of sheet products in images obtained from cameras of the strip inspection system during rolling. The authors proposed a classification of the signs of defects in the image and highlighted the most significant of them also suggested using geometric, optical and spectral features for images of flat-rolled products containing defects of different classes. The research results at this stage, obtained during the processing of digital images, showed that to identify a defect and reduce false-positive and false-negative alarms of the automated defect identification system, it is required to conduct a study of interval estimates and make decision-making rules based on intersection and merging of intervals; introduce additional classes that allow the introduction of signs that characterize the irregularity of the shape of defects and the characteristic location; the use of new technologies of soft computing will reveal the hidden patterns of the manifestation of defects in the images of the surface of the steel strip.

Abstract The aim of this article is to examine how the sense of smell and aroma compounds influence the quality of food of animal origin, and to review gas chromatography-olfactometry methods of volatile substances analysis that can help to promote regional animal products. Smell and smell-inducing compounds play an important role in human life. People have made use of aromatic herbs and spices for ages. The classification of smells was developed by, among others, Aristotle, Linnaeus, Zwaardemaker, as well as Amoore, the creator of the stereochemical theory of olfaction. Smell is also of exceptional importance in a consumer’s evaluation of food quality. Achievements in the area of chromatography, mass spectrometry and olfactometry have contributed to the development of tests for the content of volatile compounds in food materials, e.g. milk, cheese or meat. Analysis of these compounds is more and more often applied to regional products that are commonly characterised by different olfactory properties. The study’s results of raw meat of different animal species show that nutria meat and mutton differ the most from others. Apart from genetic factors, meat composition depends on feeding method, quality and type of fodder, method of cutting, meat seasoning, pH and temperature of processing. Chromatographic and olfactometric tests on animal products, in conjunction with chemometrics, can contribute to the development of reliable characteristics and help to identify the products’ origin. These tests are becoming an inseparable part of the policy of promotion of regional products with specific taste and olfactory properties.
