Solar dryers are one of most efficient devices for drying food and other products. These devices are eco-friendly and need solar energy for their operation and which is available freely and abundantly at almost every place. These are simple devices which do not need use any fossil fuel for their operation, which are expensive, exhaustive in nature and are not eco friendly. Several fresh food products and other items are dried for preservation and utilization for longer period of time. In recent times, with the development in this technology, the solar dryers are becoming well equipped with efficiency increasing add-ons which give higher performance. Several experimental studies have been carried out to mitigate the time consumption and increasing the productivity of solar dryers. Optimization of solar dryers is done to increase their workability increasing accuracy and reducing drying time and cost investment. In order to optimize the complete setup several techniques could be used to get the optimum results. In the present work Taguchi optimization technique was applied for experimental analysis of solar dryer which was used to dry potatoes. The results thus obtained showed the best configuration comprising air velocity, air flow and humidity required to dry potatoes

Silicon being a typical hard-brittle material is difficult to machine to a good surface finish. Although ductile-mode machining (DMM) is often employed to machine this advanced material but this technique requires the use of expensive ultra-precision machine tools therefore limiting its applicability. However, by proper selection of grinding parameters, precision grinding which can be performed on conventional machine tools can be used to generate massive ductile surfaces thereby reducing the polishing time and improving the surface quality. Precision grinding should be planned with reliability in advance and the process has to be performed with high rates of reproducibility. Therefore, this study investigated the effect and optimization of grinding parameters using Taguchi optimization technique during precision grinding of silicon. Experimental studies were conducted under varying depths of cut, feed rates and spindle speeds. An orthogonal array (OA), signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to find the minimum surface roughness value and to analyze the effect of the grinding parameters on the surface roughness. Confirmation tests were carried out in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the Taguchi method. The results show that feed rate mostly affected the surface roughness. The predicted roughness (Ra) of 34 nm was in agreement with the confirmation tests. Massive ductilestreaked surface was also found corresponding to the minimal surface finish determined from the optimal levels.

Abstract The objective of this study is to find an optimized thin-layer mathematical model suitable for drying kinetics of turmeric. Turmeric has a high moisture content which necessitates effective drying. A 10 kg, sample batch, of turmeric was dried in a solar dryer. Drying air temperatures and air velocity were observed in the range of 55 °C–68 °C and 0.7 m/s–1.4 m/s, respectively, in the drying experiments. It is seen that the moisture content of the turmeric is reduced from 77% to 11.93% in 22 h when compared with open sun drying, which required 60 h for the same reduction in the moisture content. Scheffler dish was used to generate steam for the dryer. Seven thin-layer mathematical models, cited in the literature, had been used for the study. These models were applied for different trays placed in the dryer. The result of the research and experimentation showed that the Page model fits best for drying in the steam-based dryer and open sun drying. Experimental results showed 63.33% saving in drying time, and the drying efficiency was found as 29.85%. Uncertainty in the drying efficiency was observed as 0.67%. Experimental investigation and the findings from the mathematical modeling are presented in this paper.

The drying process is very intensive in energy consumption. Mexico is a major producer of food, especially of varieties of chilies, with quality culinary and medicinal properties. The 65% of the national market as a dry product, which gives a benefit. In the drying process, the convective technology was used, using a horizontal tunnel with direct solar heating air. The kinetics of the solar dryer with direct heating is possible, with an average drying time of 16 hours of solar irradiance. The tests were performed in Temixco, Morelos, Mexico, located at 18 º 51 'of LN and 99º 14' of LO, with average values of 850 W/m2 irradiance maximum. The chamber temperatures were in a range between 31 and 45 °C. The air velocity range was set between 1.3 and 2.4 m/s. Final moisture contents of the dried chili were obtained in a range between 8% and 6% h.b. with an average drying velocity of 4.7 humidity degree/h. The solar direct drying is a technology that allows recovering and trying different agricultural surpluses and could promote the establishment of agro-industries.


Solar form of energy is the most broadly used renewable forms around the globe. The present paper includes the utilization of solar energy in drying food item using a flat plate solar dryer. The experiment is carried with every hour interval and the readings are noted down. The study comprises of timing from morning 9 am to evening 6pm. Around 10 kg of chilli is utilized for the drying purpose. The outcome results were optimized using Taguchi method to identify the optimum configurations for the drying effect. The result shows that, Ambient temperature as 35.5 OC value of air velocity Ambient Relative Humidity as 67.4(%) and Exhaust temperature as 54.2 OC after optimization. Also, the maximum intensity of solar rays are obtained during the daytime at 1 pm

Experiment on catfish drying employing ‘Teko Bersayap’ solar dryer was conducted. The result of the experiment indicated that the dryer was able to increase ambient temperature up to 44% and decrease ambient relative humidity up to 103%. Fish drying process followed equations : KAu = 74,94 e-0,03t for unsplitted fish and KAb = 79,25 e-0,09t for splitted fish, where KAu = moisture content of unsplitted fish (%), KAb = moisture content of splitted fish (%), t = drying time. Drying of unsplitted fish finished in 43.995 hours while drying of split fish completed in 15.29 hours. Splitting the fish increased 2,877 times drying rate.

In recent decades, the genetic algorithm (GA) has been extensively used in the design optimization of electromagnetic devices. Despite the great merits possessed by the GA, its processing procedure is highly time-consuming. On the contrary, the widely applied Taguchi optimization method is faster with comparable effectiveness in certain optimization problems. This study explores the abilities of both methods within the optimization of a permanent magnet coupling, where the optimization objectives are the minimization of coupling volume and maximization of transmitted torque. The optimal geometry of the coupling and the obtained characteristics achieved by both methods are nearly identical. The magnetic torque density is enhanced by more than 20%, while the volume is reduced by 17%. Yet, the Taguchi method is found to be more time-efficient and effective within the considered optimization problem. Thanks to the additive manufacturing techniques, the initial design and the sophisticated geometry of the Taguchi optimal designs are precisely fabricated. The performances of the coupling designs are validated using an experimental setup.

The objective of this work was to determine the effects of blanching and two drying methods, open-sun drying and natural convection solar drying, on the quality characteristics of red pepper. A 2 × 3 factorial design with experimental factors as 2 drying methods (open-sun drying and use of solar dryer) and 3 levels of pepper blanching (unblanched, blanched in plain water, and blanched in 2% NaCl) was conducted. Dried pepper samples were analysed for chemical composition, microbial load, and consumer sensory acceptability. Blanching of pepper in 2% NaCl solution followed by drying in a natural convection solar dryer reduced drying time by 15 hours. Similarly, a combination of blanching and drying in the solar dryer improved microbial quality of dried pepper. However, blanching and drying processes resulted in reduction in nutrients such as vitamin C and minerals content of pepper. Blanching followed by drying in natural convection solar dryer had the highest consumer acceptability scores for colour and overall acceptability, while texture and aroma were not significantly (p>0.05) affected by the different treatments. Therefore, natural convection solar dryer can be used to dry pepper with acceptable microbial and sensory qualities, as an alternative to open-sun drying.

Machining of Titanium alloys is difficult due to their chemical and physical properties namely excellent strength, chemical reactivity and low thermal conductivity. Traditional machining of such materials leads to formation of continuous chips and tool bits are subjected to chatter which leads to formation of poor surface on machined surface. In this study, Wire-EDM one of the most popular unconventional machining process which was used to machine such difficult-to-cut materials. Effect of Wire-EDM process parameters namely peak current, pulse-on- time, pulse-off-time, servo voltage on MRRand SR was investigated by Taguchi method. 0.25 mm brass wire was used in this process as electrode material. A surface roughness tester (Surftest 301) was used to measure surface roughness value of the machined work surface. A multi-response optimization technique was then utilized to optimize Wire-EDM process parameters for achieving maximum MRR and minimum SR simultaneously.

Abstrak. Jagung merupakan tanaman penghasil karbohidrat terpenting. Pengeringan jagung pipil menggunakan alat pengering merupakan proses untuk menghasilkan jagung pipil yang siap diolah untuk pembuatan tepung jagung dengan batas kadar air tertentu sehingga menghaslkan jagung pipil dengan kualitas yang baik. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji karakteristik pengeringan biji jagung menggunakan alat pengering surya Termodifikasi. Metode penelitian  menggunakan 3,15 kilogram jagung pipil dengan kadar air awal 22% untuk proses pengeringan. Parameter yang dianalisis terkait alat pengering kolektor surya yaitu temperatur, kelembaban relatif, kecepatan udara dan iradiasi surya, sedangkan parameter yang dianalisis terkait bahan yaitu kadar air, lama waktu pengeringan, laju pengeringan dan organoleptik. Prosedur penelitian terdiri dari pengujian kosong dan pengujian dengan menggunakan jagung pipil. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa temperatur rata-rata dalam rak pengering sebelum dilakukan modifikasi yaitu 44,4oC, temperatur rata-rata setelah dilakukan modifikasi yaitu 55,5oC dan temperatur rata-rata rak pengering pada pengeringan menggunakan jagung pipil yaitu 46,96oC. Kelembaban relatif rata-rata dalam rak pengering sebelum dilakukan modifikasi yaitu 40,1%, kelembaban relatif rata-rata dalam rak pengering setelah modifikasi yaitu 35,1% dan kelembaban relatif rata-rata pengeringan menggunakan jagung pipil yaitu 44,45%. Dari hasil pengukuran tersebut menunjukkan bahwa nilai temperatur dan kelembaban pada alat setelah modifikasi lebih baik dibandingkan sebelum alat dimodifikasi. Pengukuran temperatur dan kelembaban relatif terdiri dari 4 titik pengukuran yaitu rak 1A,1B dan rak 2A, 2B. Kecepatan udara rata-rata yang diukur konstan yaitu 0,7 m/s pada ruang pengering, sedangkan lingkungan 1,1 m/s. Total iradiasi surya selama pengeringan yaitu 1848,84 W/m2. Kadar air jagung pipil masing-masing rak yaitu rak 1A 14,29%, rak 1B 14,47%, rak 2A 13,91% dan rak 2B 14,1%. Hasil dari pengujian organoleptik, panelis agak menyukai jagung pipil yang dikeringkan menggunakan alat pengering tersebut.Characteristics of Seed Drying (Zea mays L.) Using a Modified Adriyarkara Solar DryerAbstract. Corn is the most important carbohydrate plant. Drying corn using a drying tool is a process to produce corn that are ready to be processed for making corn flour with a certain water content limit so as to produce corn with good quality. The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of drying of corn kernels using a modified solar dryer. The research method used 3,15 kilogram of corn milled with the initial moisture content of 22% for drying process. The parameters analyzed in relation to solar collector dryers are temperature, relative humidity, air velocity and solar irradiation, while the parameters analyzed are materials such as moisture content, drying time, drying rate and organoleptic. The research procedure consists of unloaded testing and testing using corn. The results showed that the average temperature in the dryer tray before modification was 44,4°C, the average temperature after modification was 55,5°C and the average temperature of the dryer tray on drying using corn was 46,96oC. The average relative humidity in the dryer tray before modification is 40,1%, the average relative humidity in the dryer tray after modification is 35,1% and the average relative humidity of drying using corn is 44,45%. From the measurement results show that the value of temperature and humidity in the tool after modification is better than before. Measurement of temperature and relative humidity consist of 4 point of measurement that is tray 1A, 1B and tray 2A, 2B. Average mean air velocity measured is 0,7 m/s at the dryer room, while the environment is 1,1 m/s. Total solar irradiation during drying is 1848,84 W/m2. Moisture level of corn each shelves tray 1A is 14,29%, tray 1B is 14.47%, tray 2A is 13,91% and tray 2B is 14,1%. As a result of organoleptic testing, panelists rather like dried corn using the dryer.

Concrete durability is one of the most important concerns in the field of construction. The environmentally friendly materials that can provide the durability are of great value in the construction of concrete structures. The use of natural pozzolans is one of the cheapest and most efficient methods in this field, which offers a good performance from environmental and economic point of view and satisfies required engineering parameters. In this study, the effect of using natural pozzolan in the manufacture of concrete exposed to sulfate and chloride ion of Oman sea water was investigated. The Taguchi optimization method was used to reduce the number of samples prepared, reduce the cost of experiments and achieve an optimal mix design. The four parameters, namely water to cement ratio, different percentages of natural pozzolan, super-plasticizer and cement grade with different ratios, were considered as problem variables. The Taguchi optimization method proposed 8 mix designs based on the defined levels for the variables. By constructing 96 samples, two parameters of permeability and water absorption from Oman Sea and drinking water were investigated in the samples. By introducing the results of the experiments into the Taguchi method, the final optimal design was presented by this method, and by constructing 12 additional samples and conducting permeability and water absorption experiments, the behavior of this optimal mix design was verified. The appropriate performance of the Taguchi method was demonstrated by obtaining the optimal mix designs from the Taguchi method, constructing this mix design and comparing the results with the regulation limitations. The results showed that it is acceptable to use natural pozzolan under moderate to severe chloride and sulfate ion attacks, but it is not recommended in the extreme environmental conditions.
