Abstract Alcoa C238 is a cold-finished aluminum wrought product developed for applications requiring postbrazing and welding strength. The alloy has good machinability and roll-threading characteristics. It has slightly lower corrosion resistance as compared to 6xxx series alloys. Alloy C238 has excellent welding and very good brazing properties. Initial applications include fittings and connectors that are brazed and/or welded. This product is also available in cold-heading rod that has been used to cold-form connectors. This datasheet provides information on tensile properties. AbstractThe welding of thermoplastic pipes under a shear joint configuration using friction spin welding is investigated. The shear joint configuration consists of two cylindrical and concentric polypropylene plastic parts joined with each other at their interfacing cylindrical surfaces through frictional heat generation. The effects of welding pressure and rotational velocity on the joint overlap distance and joint strength between the parts of polypropylene plastic are evaluated. The study is of a specific application in making plastic pressure vessels and joining of pipes. The joint strength is tested by conducting the hydraulic pressure burst test. The burst test is conducted for welded specimens manufactured using different values of rotational velocity and welding pressure. It is observed that at the constant spin velocities, the welding pressure in the range 64.8 to 65.2 kPa produced better joint strength than the other values of welding pressure in the overall range 64–76 kPa. It is concluded that the suitable welding pressure range to manufacture polypropylene plastic pressure vessels in the shear joint configuration using friction spin welding is 64.5 to 65.2 kPa. Further, it is established that the user can control the joint overlap distance at 64.8 kPa welding pressure by selectively controlling the rotational velocity in the range of 700 to 2500 rpm.

This paper presents an investigation of the bond mechanism between carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates, concrete and steel in the near-surface mounted (NSM) CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beam-bond tests. The experimental program consisting of thirty modified concrete beams flexurally strengthened with NSM CFRP strips was published in. The effects of five parameters and their interactions on the ultimate load carrying capacities and the associated bond mechanisms of the beams are investigated in this paper with consideration of the following investigated parameters: beam span, beam depth, longitudinal tensile steel reinforcement ratio, the bond length of the CFRP strips and compressive concrete strength. The longitudinal steel reinforcement was cut at the beam mid-span in four beams to investigate a better assessment of the influence of the steel reinforcement ratio on the bond behaviour of CFRP to concrete bond behaviour. The numerical analysis implemented in this paper is based on a nonlinear micromechanical finite element model (FEM) that was used for investigation of the flexural behaviour of NSM CFRP-strengthened members. The 3D model based on advanced CFRP to concrete bond responses was introduced to modelling of tested specimens. The FEM procedure presents the orthotropic behaviour of the CFRP strips and the bond response between the CFRP and concrete. Comparison of the experimental and numerical results revealed an excellent agreement that confirms the suitability of the proposed FE model.

Structural members comprising geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars have not been investigated appropriately for axial compressive loading cases. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by evaluating the structural efficiency of GFRP-reinforced geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GGRAC)-based members subjected to axial compressive loading. A total of nine compressive members (250 mm in cross-section and 1150 mm in height) were constructed to examine the effect of the number of longitudinal GFRP bars and the vertical spacing of transverse GFRP hoops/ties. The experimental results portrayed that the ductility of GGRAC compressive members improved with the reduction in the pitch of GFRP hoops. The axial load-carrying capacity (LCC) of GGRAC compressive members increased by increasing the number of GFRP bars up to eight (corresponding to a reinforcement ratio of 2.11%) while it decreased by using ten longitudinal GFRP bars (corresponding to a reinforcement ratio of 2.65%). Additionally, an empirical model was suggested to predict the axial LCC of GGRAC compressive members based on a large amount of experimental data of similar members. The experimental results and related theoretical predictions substantially prove the applicability and accuracy of the proposed model. The proposed column represents a feasible structural member in terms of material availability and environmental sustainability.

Finite element models were developed to assess the influence of several parameters on the load capacity, deflection, and initial stiffness of multi-story, partially grouted masonry walls with openings. The base model was validated with experimental data from three walls. The analyses indicated that the load capacity of masonry walls was considerably sensitive to the ungrouted and grouted masonry strengths and mortar shear strength; moderately sensitive to the vertical reinforcement ratio and aspect ratio; slightly sensitive to the axial stress; and almost insensitive to the opening size, reinforcement spacing, and horizontal reinforcement ratio. The deflection of the walls had well-defined correlations with the masonry strength, vertical reinforcement, axial stress and aspect ratio. The initial stiffness was especially sensitive to the axial stress and the aspect ratio, but weakly correlated with the opening size, and the spacing and size of the reinforcement.

Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP)-reinforced concrete members exhibit low ductility due to the linear-elastic behaviour of FRP materials. Concrete members reinforced by hybrid FRP–steel bars can improve strength and ductility simultaneously. In this study, the plastic hinge problem of hybrid FRP–steel reinforced concrete beams was numerically assessed through finite element analysis (FEA). Firstly, a finite element model was proposed to validate the numerical method by comparing the simulation results with the test results. Then, three plastic hinge regions—the rebar yielding zone, concrete crushing zone, and curvature localisation zone—of the hybrid reinforced concrete beams were analysed in detail. Finally, the effects of the main parameters, including the beam aspect ratio, concrete grade, steel yield strength, steel reinforcement ratio, steel hardening modulus, and FRP elastic modulus on the lengths of the three plastic zones, were systematically evaluated through parametric studies. It is determined that the hybrid reinforcement ratio exerts a significant effect on the plastic hinge lengths. The larger the hybrid reinforcement ratio, the larger is the extent of the rebar yielding zone and curvature localisation zone. It is also determined that the beam aspect ratio, concrete compressive strength, and steel hardening ratio exert significant positive effects on the length of the rebar yielding zone.

In the presented paper, the impacts of steel fiber use and tensile reinforcement ratio on shear behavior of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) beams were investigated from the point of different tensile reinforcement ratios. In the scope of the experimental program, a total of eight beams consisting of four reinforcement ratios representing low to high ratios ranged from 0.8% to 2.2% were casted without shear reinforcement and subjected to the four-point loading test. While half of the test beams included 30 mm end-hooked steel fibers (SF-UHPC) with 2.0 vol%, the remaining beams were produced without the fiber to show possible effectiveness of the fiber use. The shear performances were discussed in terms of the load—deflection response, cracking pattern and failure mode, first cracking load and ultimate shear strength. In this sense, all the non-fiber beams were failed by shear with a dramatic load drop, regardless of the tensile reinforcement amount, before the yielding of reinforcement and they produced no deflection capability. The test results showed that while the inclusion of steel fibers to the UHPC mixture with low reinforcement ratios changed the failure mode from the shear to flexure, it significantly enhanced the ultimate shear strength in the case of higher reinforcement ratio through the SF-UHPC’ superior mechanical properties and fibers’ crack-bridging ability.
