This paper describes the measurement system used to monitor the energy dissipated in the braking rheostat resistors on board a locomotive operating in a DC rail system. The aim of the activity is the accurate estimation of the energy, nowadays wasted, that could be recovered thanks to the implementation of the smart grid paradigm in the DC railway system. To provide metrological reliability to the measured wasted energy, a preliminary identification and estimation of the uncertainty is provided. The target uncertainty of the measurements is 1 %.

During the last decade, due to the increasing importance of reliability and availability, railway industry is making greater use of fault diagnosis approaches for early fault detection, as well as Condition-based maintenance frameworks. Due to the influence of traction drive in the railway system availability, several research works have been focused on Fault Diagnosis for Railway traction drives. Fault diagnosis approaches have been applied to electric machines, sensors and power electronics. Furthermore, Condition-based maintenance framework seems to reduce corrective and Time-based maintenance works in Railway Systems. However, there is not any publication that summarizes all the research works carried out in Fault diagnosis and Condition-based Maintenance frameworks for Railway Traction Drives. Thus, this review presents the development of Health Assessment and Fault Diagnosis in Railway Traction Drives during the last decade.

Introduction of the mass rapid transit railway system through the Gautrain has not only addressed the transport issue in South Africa but has also motivated and promoted the country’s economic growth by creating employment. Despite the increase in research focusing on the importance of the Gautrain to the South African economy, the influence of perceived convenience, image and safety on commuter satisfaction and loyalty in the South African mass rapid transit railway system context is still limited. This paper used a data collected from 206 Gautrain commuters in the Gauteng province of South Africa to examine the interplay between perceived convenience, image, safety, commuter satisfaction and loyalty. Smart PLS software technique was used to statistically analyse the measurement and structural models. The results revealed that perceived convenience, image and safety positively influenced commuter satisfaction, which, in turn, influenced commuter loyalty. These results may be used by marketers in mass public railway systems to initiate strategies intended to increase both commuter satisfaction and loyalty

The very strict safety standards, which must be guaranteed in a railway system, make the testing of all electronic components a unique and challenging case study. Software-based self-test represents a very attractive test solution to cope with the problem of on-line and off-line testing of microprocessor-based systems. It makes it possible to deeply test hardware components without introducing extra hardware and stressing the system in its operational condition. This chapter overviews the basic principles of software-based self-test techniques, focusing on a set of best practices to be applied in writing, verifying and computing the final test coverage of high-quality test programs for railway systems.

The existing fault location methods for all-parallel autotransformer railway systems (AARS) have limitations because they are generally designed for several given feeding conditions. In alternate feeding conditions, the existing fault location methods do not work well and may have large errors. To solve this problem, we have proposed a generalized fault location scheme for AARS in this paper. After analyzing the fault characteristics of AARS, we classified the feeding conditions of the faulted section of AARS into three types and introduced the corresponding fault location methods. In order to identify the faulted section and its feeding condition, we first formed a switch state matrix based on the adjacency matrix and mapped the fault current distribution into a current state matrix, then we unified the two matrices into a fault state matrix to reflect the fault state of the AARS. Finally, a generalized fault location scheme was proposed based on a fault state matrix. The proposed scheme effectively eliminates the negative influence of feeding conditions on the fault location, and it can identify the fault type and locate faults in different feeding conditions. Several simulation cases verified the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This study aims to evaluate the need for a change in the maintenance philosophy used for the permanent route of the railway concession that provides the service for rail passengers in a metropolitan region. It also examines the need for production improvement, due to the requirement for a change in the rolling stock. The technique of total productive maintenance and its indicators are applied to evaluate the procedure for replacement of sleepers in narrow gauge lines. The history of the railway in Brazil is also presented, together with citations on the components of railway systems, the permanent way and a case study showing the strategy chosen in order to reduce the time for improvements by more than 10%.

Quality factor estimation and correction are necessary to compensate the seismic energy dissipated during acoustic-/elastic-wave propagation in the earth. In this process, known as [Formula: see text]-filtering in the realm of seismic processing, the main goal is to improve the resolution of the seismic signal, as well as to recover part of the energy dissipated by the anelastic attenuation. We have found a way to improve [Formula: see text]-factor estimation from seismic reflection data. Our methodology is based on the combination of the peak-frequency-shift (PFS) method and the redatuming operator. Our innovation is in the way we correct traveltimes when the medium consists of many layers. In other words, the correction of the traveltime table used in the PFS method is performed using the redatuming operator. This operation, performed iteratively, allows a more accurate estimation of the [Formula: see text] factor layer by layer. Applications to synthetic and real data (Viking Graben) reveal the feasibility of our analysis.
