IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON THE GLOBAL ENERGY COAL MARKET

The article highlights the changes in the global thermal coal market associated with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, examines the dynamics of import volumes by key countries - consumers of thermal coal and export volumes by major exporting countries, as well as price changes in the main international markets. Analysis of changes in the global steam coal market caused by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and a number of other objective factors demonstrates a change in the competitive positions of the largest exporting countries, which may have long-term consequences. In addition, the article examines the continuing trend of dividing the thermal coal market into the high-calorie and low-calorie thermal coal markets, which have multidirectional development prospects.

Subject Outlook for global coal markets. Significance Thermal coal prices hit a record of 210 dollars per tonne in July 2008 and have declined since 2011. Last year, prices averaged 57 dollars per tonne and until recently struggled to hold above the 45 threshold. The slide is due to environmental concerns, which are shifting power generation towards low-carbon sources. After several years of 300 million tonnes (mt) yearly growth, global coal demand fell by 63 mt in 2014 and by 180 mt in 2015. Although many mines have been shut, production fell by less than demand. Impacts This year Russia may surpass its 2015 production by 10 mt, all of which will be exported. Australia's compliance with Paris emissions reduction targets may thwart domestic coal projects mulled by China's Shenhua and India's Adani. Having lost its export markets, Indonesia is redirecting its coal production towards the slated increase in domestic power generation. Colombia has entered the Indian market thanks to record-low freight rates; their increase may reduce flows to the subcontinent. Japan targets a 26% reduction in emissions for 2030 by limiting coal use to 26% of total power output.

Since coal resources are located around the world and often far away from where the coal is consumed, transportation is important. The industries that use coal such as power plants, industrial plants, coke plants, and commercial institutions usually prefer different transportation methods. The demand in these industries and the transportation methods they use differ over time. This chapter analyzes the international coal transportation and demand. An analysis for the US coal market and the transportation to industries along with the methods that are used between 2001-2015 are presented. A trend analysis was performed to show the long-term demand for each transportation method in each industry. Such analysis is also useful as it allows observing the coal demand from each industry. Analysis results reveal the change in coal amounts that are transported to each industry using the railroad, truck, and other methods.

During adolescence, physical activity (PA) decreases with potentially serious, long-term consequences for physical and mental health. Although barriers have been identified as an important PA correlate in adults, research on adolescents’ PA barriers is lacking. Thus reliable, valid scales to measure adolescents’ PA barriers are needed. We present two studies describing a broad range of PA barriers relevant to adolescents with a multidimensional approach. In Study 1, 124 adolescents (age range = 12 – 24 years) reported their most important PA barriers. Two independent coders categorized those barriers. The most frequent PA barriers were incorporated in a multidimensional questionnaire. In Study 2, 598 adolescents (age range = 13 – 21 years) completed this questionnaire and reported their current PA, intention, self-efficacy, and negative outcome expectations. Seven PA barrier dimensions (leisure activities, lack of motivation, screen-based sedentary behavior, depressed mood, physical health, school workload, and preconditions) were confirmed in factor analyses. A multidimensional approach to measuring PA barriers in adolescents is reliable and valid. The current studies provide the basis for developing individually tailored interventions to increase PA in adolescents.

Lullabies are essentially sung for their soothing nature but, as this article shows, they have other important functions. One of the most important of these is that lullabies may provide much-needed language stimulation with important long-term consequences for future learning. This paper begins the work of addressing the dearth of scholarly research on lullabies, especially in the Yoruba (Nigeria: Niger-Congo) culture. It looks at the range of themes, dictions, and prosody that are intertwined to reveal Yoruba beliefs and world-views about children, starting with their time in the womb. The study uses a descriptive survey method to analyse data collected through participant observation. It shows that Yoruba lullabies not only offer insights into Yoruba cultural beliefs but also depend greatly on figurative expression and prosodic systems. These rich literary qualities identify lullabies as the earliest sub-genre of children's poetry.

AbstractOur interest has focused on the investigation of the anti-obese potential of kidney beans (P. vulgaris) pods extract. In the course of the study, obesity development in rats was induced with high-calorie diet. Control and obese rats then have consumed with aqueous kidney beans (P. vulgaris) pods extract during 6 weeks (200 mg/kg). Results show that the long-term consumption of P. vulgaris pods extract can lead to the reduction of hyperglycemia and insulin resistance development. Furthermore, we saw a normalization of lipid peroxidation parameters and oxidative modification of protein due to the consumption of the kidney beans (P. vulgaris) pods extract. Our experimental data demonstrate the ability of the kidney beans (P. vulgaris) pod extracts to mitigate obesity development but the details of this mechanism remains to be not fully understood.
