In the health sector, Data Analytics and Machine Learning (ML) methods are taking over role of skill and experience of a doctor especially in diagnosing diseases and preventive health measures. The health care industry is collecting very large amount of data related to patients, his medical history for preventive medication and diagnosing disease well in time and more accurately. In this paper, a comparison of five classification machine learning methods viz. Decision Tree, Random Forests, Support Vector Machine, Artificial Neural Network and Fuzzy Logic based soft computing method is done for heart disease diagnosis on the basis of data available on public domain. Out of 76 parameters collected for a patient, only 15 medical parameters such as blood pressure, sex, age, obesity and cholesterol level are used for predicting heart disease of patients.

In the modern era of information technology, machine learning algorithms are used in different domains for boosting the quality of decision making. The correct decision making about the disease diagnosis is one of the applications where these approaches are applied successfully for assisting the doctors. Correct and timely diagnosis of disease is the primary requirement of effective treatment. Today, one of the most leading causes of death is heart disease. This chapter deals with the application of different machine learning algorithms for effective heart disease diagnosis. Diagnosis through the machine learning algorithms involves the three major steps, data preprocessing, feature selection, and classification. The chapter covers the experimental study of performance of SVM, ANN, logistic regression, random forest, KNN, AdaBoost, Naive Bayes, decision tree, SGD, CN2 rule inducer approaches.

Predictors for success in smoking cessation have been studied, but a prediction model capable of providing a success rate for each patient attempting to quit smoking is still lacking. The aim of this study is to develop prediction models using machine learning algorithms to predict the outcome of smoking cessation. Data was acquired from patients underwent smoking cessation program at one medical center in Northern Taiwan. A total of 4875 enrollments fulfilled our inclusion criteria. Models with artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), logistic regression (LoR), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), classification and regression tree (CART), and naïve Bayes (NB) were trained to predict the final smoking status of the patients in a six-month period. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC or ROC value) were used to determine the performance of the models. We adopted the ANN model which reached a slightly better performance, with a sensitivity of 0.704, a specificity of 0.567, an accuracy of 0.640, and an ROC value of 0.660 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.617–0.702) for prediction in smoking cessation outcome. A predictive model for smoking cessation was constructed. The model could aid in providing the predicted success rate for all smokers. It also had the potential to achieve personalized and precision medicine for treatment of smoking cessation.

Heart diseases are responsible for the greatest number of deaths all over the world. These diseases are usually not detected in early stages as the cost of medical diagnostics is not affordable by a majority of the people. Research has shown that machine learning methods have a great capability to extract valuable information from the medical data. This information is used to build the prediction models which provide cost effective technological aid for a medical practitioner to detect the heart disease in early stages. However, the presence of some irrelevant and redundant features in medical data deteriorates the competence of the prediction system. This research was aimed to improve the accuracy of the existing methods by removing such features. In this study, brute force-based algorithm of feature selection was used to determine relevant significant features. After experimenting rigorously with 7528 possible combinations of features and 5 machine learning algorithms, 8 important features were identified. A prediction model was developed using these significant features. Accuracy of this model is experimentally calculated to be 86.4%which is higher than the results of existing studies. The prediction model proposed in this study shall help in predicting heart disease efficiently.

Heart-related diseases or Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are the main reason for a huge number of death in the world over the last few decades and has emerged as the most life-threatening disease, not only in India but in the whole world. So, there is a need fora reliable, accurate, and feasible system to diagnose such diseases in time for proper treatment. Machine Learning algorithms and techniques have been applied to various medical datasets to automate the analysis of large and complex data. Many researchers, in recent times, have been using several machine learning techniques to help the health care industry and the professionals in the diagnosis of heart-related diseases. Heart is the next major organ comparing to the brain which has more priority in the Human body. It pumps the blood and supplies it to all organs of the whole body. Prediction of occurrences of heart diseases in the medical field is significant work. Data analytics is useful for prediction from more information and it helps the medical center to predict various diseases. A huge amount of patient-related data is maintained on monthly basis. The stored data can be useful for the source of predicting the occurrence of future diseases. Some of the data mining and machine learning techniques are used to predict heart diseases, such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine (SVM).Prediction and diagnosingof heart disease become a challenging factor faced by doctors and hospitals both in India and abroad. To reduce the large scale of deaths from heart diseases, a quick and efficient detection technique is to be discovered. Data mining techniques and machine learning algorithms play a very important role in this area. The researchers accelerating their research works to develop software with thehelp of machine learning algorithms which can help doctors to decide both prediction and diagnosing of heart disease. The main objective of this research project is to predict the heart disease of a patient using machine learning algorithms.

Machine learning techniques are widely used in healthcare sectors to predict fatal diseases. The objective of this research was to develop and compare the performance of the traditional system with the proposed system that predicts the heart disease implementing the Logistic regression, K-nearest neighbor, Support vector machine, Decision tree, and Random Forest classification models. The proposed system helped to tune the hyperparameters using the grid search approach to the five mentioned classification algorithms. The performance of the heart disease prediction system is the major research issue. With the hyperparameter tuning model, it can be used to enhance the performance of the prediction models. The achievement of the traditional and proposed system was evaluated and compared in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. As the traditional system achieved accuracies between 81.97% and 90.16%., the proposed hyperparameter tuning model achieved accuracies in the range increased between 85.25% and 91.80%. These evaluations demonstrated that the proposed prediction approach is capable of achieving more accurate results compared with the traditional approach in predicting heart disease with the acquisition of feasible performance.
